I've always wanted a gas fireplace. (Especially after The Blizzard of 2022 with all the power outages!) Unfortunately two heating & cooling companies told me it couldn't be installed in my existing fireplace without completely removing my entire fireplace. So.. years went by. I accepted my fate... Here's what I found that I am not happy with. 1. Electrical clamp not tightened on wire. 2. Access hole in floor for gas line and power not sealed up. The installation manual required the access hole to be sealed. 3. Gas line bent around and in direct contact with furnace/ hot water flue pipe. 4. Gas line not secured or sealed at entry point to unit. Manual states it should be sealed. 5. Fire stop above unit not installed between studs. 6. Straps at flue pipe entrance on top of unit not secured to pipe as required by installation manual. 7. Fire stop in attic non existant, just around pipe. I think that even tho this was a problem when this place was first built, it should've been brought to my attention and built for additional cost if need be. I've since fixed this with plywood and sealed as much as possible with insulation. Since finding these issues I'm now suspecting what other issues/short cuts were done in places that can't be seen very readily like the exit thru the roof, and caulking required by the manual. read more

Took us several weeks to get an appointment. We were originally booked for early December but had to cancel due to an unexpected event. So we were rescheduled for a month later in early January. They are very busy in the winter. Seemed everyone is getting their fireplace repaired or needs maintenance. We have a gas-burning fireplace that was not working and needed a part replaced. After the part was replaced, the serviceman cleaned the fireplace and rearranged the (fake) logs. I wouldn't say they are cheap but then this is a specialized trade. There are not that many fireplace / chimney businesses and some only service particular brands. We were referred to this business by another fireplace business that no longer services our brand. We have a fireplace that we enjoy using again. read more

I called the 2nd week of October to schedule an appointment for repair. my pilot light won't light. they scheduled an appointment for January 15th which was canceled due to snowstorm. rather than scheduling me the following week they offered me an appointment for the end of February which I declined due to previous engagement. I didn't schedule them and will try to find a handyman to fix it. they charge $159 to make a service call which is more than any other company. I do no recommend them read more

Just paid $900 /hour service rate for a guy to come out and vacuum 2 newly installed gas fireplaces. Fixed price of $225 each was quoted up front but I felt for that amount some actual work outside of vacuuming and spraying glass cleaner on both units might be involved. Took the service tech 27 minutes from arrival to presenting me with the bill. The value provided was certainly not worth the cost. read more

On a yearly basis, I try to get my fireplace prepped for our Buffalo winter. Switching over to gas in 2004 was a lifesaver due to the October storm the following year knocking out my power for four days. Staying warm at night was no problem with the help of the gas fireplace. Thus, I called Michelle to make an appointment last month and took the closest date possible, which was December 15, 2021. She was so kind and personable while talking to her on the phone. The guys, Jon and Dan, arrived right on time. Upon entering the homestead, they removed their boots as it had rained outside earlier that day. We chatted as they continually worked on getting the fireplace up to snuff. It was so nice to communicate with them because they made us feel at home while respecting the items in the domicile. Blackhats is my mainstay company as a result of the following reasons: 1) Professionalism; 2) Excellent communication skills; 3) Respect of our belongings; 4) Personality of each staff member; and 5) Superb work ethics. We had a gas insert installed in late 2018 and our experience with Black Hat from a pricing and service/install perspective was pretty good, including the need to have a piece of sheet metal pre-configured to surround the insert and cover part of the fireplace opening (esthetic reasons.) Flash forward 2 1/2 years...Unfortunately, when we called explaining a problem we were having igniting the fireplace on a cold morning a few weeks ago, the person answering wasn't helpful with any suggestions at all. We had already tried various ideas, including changing the batteries in the remote (which we had learned to do after scouring online sources for clues to our fireplace maintenance, mfr. info, cleaning and vacuuming the apparatus, checking the gas supply, all cords plugged in, etc.) Had never received nor could we find any "helpful hints" on the fireplace operation or maintenance beyond bare-bones levels from the dealer or at their website...really, other than how to BUY a new insert (LOTS OF INFO), not much there on maintenance/operation by the customer...perhaps this is why: They WERE very happy to schedule a service call around 10 days later, and the repair person was here less than 15 minutes total, during which he took one look, switched out the internal/fireplace set of batteries and said "Done", did a quick, cursory sweeping around the insert (not any sort of CLEANING at all). When asked why they hadn't suggested to do the in-unit battery switch or how to check it when we called (second of two such checkpoints suggested online, we thought we had addressed it but apparently hadn't) he shrugged his shoulders and said "That'll be $149.95 plus tax for our 'clean (nope) and tuning' (tuning?) call. Then he was paid (reluctantly) by cc and left. So there you go...a business that does a decent job on the sales and install end of things, but has completely forgotten or has decided to ignore for financial gain or other reasons the 'service' side of the customer satisfaction equation. Could have been a completely different experience and led to a very happy (and maybe a bit embarrassed by our 'second battery oversight') customer - but I guess in their view "they got paid." Too bad. Lesson learned on our part. We will likely look elsewhere for service and true customer support if we need it again. read more

We had our new fireplace installed almost a year ago. We had a 30 year old wood burning fireplace. The door fell off. Getting a new door would be custom and expensive. We contacted Black Hat (and other companies as well). Black hat suggested the best solution, a new 6000 CLX Heat n Glo furnace. They did a great job on installation and communication was very good. After a year, it has been the best upgrade we have made to our house (and we have doing a lot of upgrades). We are very happy! read more

Ordered a gas fireplace for my gfs remodel. Black Hat recommended a 3 sided unit at over $5000 and a standard unit for the living room. The living room unit puts out so little heat it's useless. Contractor said the unit for the bedroom was far too big and would overheat the room in minutes. Black Hat refused to allow us to change the order and kept her $2500 deposit. These guys are nothing but thieves and incompetent aholes. Stay away from this place or you will regret it read more

Lots of issues with the insert soon after purchase. And attitude from female that answers the phone when you call to complain on something that cost thousands. I nicely stated my name when he rudely returned to the phone and said I need my chimney cleaned. He stated 'we are booked through the year'. Not 'I'm sorry' or 'thanks for considering us' nothing!!! After seeing an A+ BBB rating, I went with Black Hat Chimney & Fireplace to install a set of Heat & Glow gas logs in my old wood burning fireplace, replacing an old set of gas logs that were in the house when purchased. They were very pleasant to deal with. The installation guys were nice, and were careful to cover everything with drop cloths when working and out to the door, and left everything very clean, not a small feat with such a messy job. A number of gas lines needed to be rearranged in the basement and running to the fireplace and they did a good, thorough job. The installation and logs were not cheap but I don't think this is a purchase to cut corners on. I would recommend them without reservation. read more

Excellent company to work with. We had a chimney fire in January 2015. I called several chimney and fireplace companies with little response and even less assistance. Finally, I got the number for Black Hat and I immediately felt comfortable. After 2 months of run around with our insurance company, Bob contacted the adjuster directly and gave them what they wanted/needed to settle our claim. Horrible. Hired to rebuild chimney and install gas insert fireplace. Multiple call backs were necessary. They actually didn't rebuilt chimney to its previous height. Inside, the insert rattled horribly creating a noise that made us not want to use it. Now the metal topper on top of the chimney is dislodged. We're not going to call them to fix this time because we are so tired of them. Spent more than 8k dollars and completely unsatisfied. Unprofessional. Crappy workmanship! read more
