This place was awesome! We came for the cheese wheel experience and it didn't disappoint. Only negatives are it can take a while to get the cheese wheel as there's only one wheel for the whole restaurant, and the restaurant is tiny and it gets loud at dinner time. The appetizer special was burrata with prosciutto and bread which was phenomenal. The cheese wheel was really good and obviously had LOTS of cheese. I recommend adding the meatballs or lobster if you like that. Desserts were par for the course: chocolate cake and cheesecake when we went. Definitely recommend! read more

Black Forest Bistro is phenomenal! My daughter suggested we go on a mother daughter & granddaughter date night . This place is small & reservations are required. This place was impressive from the minute we arrived till we departed from the restaurant. The server & server assistant & bartender were on point very professional , friendly & very attentive. Forgive me , I forgot their names but one young lady looked she was still in high but she was super sweet & attentive & our server was a Hispanic lady who was very attentive & efficient. We didn't get any full on dinners but appetizers & dessert & cocktails. The bartender suggested the house hot chocolate which was a totally clear no whip topping it was good but I preferred the key lime mule ! Sushi ( ahi) nachos (absolute favorite ) and steak bites w/ a cheese dip & sticky noodles & key lime mule which my daughter bragged about & it was absolutely delicious & amazing! I would definitely order that drink again ! It honestly looked too pretty to drink . We had lemon type of cake & my daughter didn't care for it . I thought it was good but not unique but it was worth a try , When we're back in town I'm making sure my husband will try this bistro out ! We had an excellent time for the cheese wheel experience. The staff was awesome and our waiter Tyler was great from beginning to end, but he couldn't have done it without the rest of the crew. The Sushi Nachos, holy shit, they were ridiculous perfect. The pasta was amazing as you could imagine, and even the damn garlic bread had some ridiculous flavors hidden in there. An absolute treat. Restaurant is super cute and all of the staff are incredibly sweet and kind. The building itself is really small and felt cramped but it's an old building with character. It was very loud as well but that's likely also due to the structure of the small building and the amount of people that were in there. The food was not only beautiful but delicious and unique!!! Bottom Line: I've had better Thai food at a Chinese restaurant. This is my first ever review. Never have I ever felt compelled enough to actually write a review, but here we are. My wife and I paid $100 per person to experience the worst "Thai" food, bar none. I would be embarrassed to have that food leave my kitchen. Every dish was some part over cooked and other part bland. Every dish did not even attempt to incorporate a key part of Thai cuisine: spice. The lazy excuse here was every dish came with raw Thai chili peppers but never tried to incorporate the spice into the flavor profile. The drunken noodles were not even the traditional large sheets of noodle but a dish more reminiscent of watered down Pad Thai. The dumplings were soggy and over cooked with their only redeeming factor being a decent attempt at a sauce. The soup was boring and needed salt along with anything to make it not devoid of flavor. The papaya salad was merely decent but lacked the true bold flavors of muddled fish sauce and spice that normally accompany it. Finally the poor sea bass (pictured below) was bland and served on an unassuming overcooked bed of rice with not even an attempt to plate the dish with inspiration. The drinks were disappointing as well with my wife's drink only tasting of pineapple juice and mine lacking the rush of flavor traditionally associated with Mekhong. The atmosphere was loud, crowded, and felt cluttered. Service was good but our 6 course meal took over 2 hours. This wouldn't have been a problem if the food was worth the wait. I truly had high hopes for this, but left feeling cheated and disappointed that I didn't give my money to Somjai Thai that serves delicious food in a fast manner. I am not condemning the place for trying but feel that we should have been guinea pigs at $100 a head. We will likely give this place another shot and try their normal table fare another time. read more

My husband and I celebrated our 32nd anniversary at Black Forest Bistro. It was our first time there and definitely will not be our last. When I saw the menu and pics of the food, I knew I wanted to eat there. I was slightly concerned that it was a "dress up' kind of place until I saw pics of the interior. I was thrilled to find out it has a comfortable "mountain town" kind of vibe. We opted for jeans and sweaters. Yay. (Though I know you'd be comfortable in about anything.) When we got there the hostess greeted us. She had a sense of humor and family-feel welcoming style. We were seated at a cute little table to the side of a huge rock fireplace, next to a rock wall. It felt like a vacation-in-the-mountains restaurant. Right away, they presented us with a card signed by all the staff for our anniversary, gifting us a complementary piece of cake ... and a bag of chocolate truffles. Wow. The server came by quickly. We decided to lead off with a couple of their award-winning old-fashioneds. My husband got the maple bacon and I got the smoked. They were both fantastic. I thought the maple bacon was a tiny bit more sweet, not much. I loved the smoky walnut flavor and smell of mine. Plus, to be honest, it was just really cool when she took the top off and the smoke came pouring out, dramatic. Right away we noticed that there's a tremendous team spirit with the staff. Everyone was working together and friendly but not at all obtrusive. The food was all served with great timing. Everything we ate was absolutely delicious and the presentation was stunning. The sushi nachos were so tasty. If I go for lunch, I may just order that as my entree. My husband had the Korean sticky noodles. Huge portion and really tasty. The sea bass was one of the best pieces of fish I've ever eating in my life. Incredible. Absolutely incredible. The mushroom ravioli that came with the sea bass was perfect. This chef is amazing. The bartender came by with complementary drinks in the cutest tiny mugs. It was a "special hot chocolate drink". I don't know what magic this guy performs, he's gooooood, but these little drinks were really tasty. I could have drank a 12 ounce mug of this delight ... but probably shouldn't. It was warm, chocolatey and you could taste a bit of roasted marshmallow. For dessert, we opted for the chocolate cake ... to go. Honestly, we were really full. I can't say enough about this place! It's a really cute setting inside. It's basically a little cabin. Nothing fancy. Beautiful outside seating area with lighting. BUT the food was amazing! The chef did a wonderful job! We enjoyed everything! Service was top notch! It was also my friend's birthday and she was given a very generous slice of chocolate cake that was so good! There's a reason Black Forest Bistro WINS and PLACES in so many categories for "The Best of the Springs!" From service to bar drinks to the food....it's one of my favorite restaurants. The friendliness of the staff makes our visit so special every time we dine. And the food....I've had the sushi nachos, ahi tuna, Korean sticky street noodles, lobster ravioli and Bayou chicken fried chicken (just to mention a few of their fabulous dishes.) Sometimes the food looks too pretty to eat. You absolutely have to snap a photo before diving in. The drinks are the same - beautiful and tasty. I see Flip (the bartender) as a true artist. On occasions, I've had the opportunity to meet Chef Deanna. She takes pride in what is being served to her customers and it shows in her food as well as the entire ambiance of the restaurant. We visited Black Forest Bistro for the "Cheese wheel experience". This was also my first visit since it became the Bistro. The "experience" was exactly that. It was interesting to see your pasta stirred around in the parmesan cheese wheel. I thought the flavor was nice, though parmesan has such a distinctive flavor, I wish it came through more. Perhaps some shaved Parmesan on top would have helped this. There are appetizers or salad you can order and there are add-ons for the pasta (sausage, scallops, shrimp....) and garlic bread you can order. Now for the details. First, my experience with the reservation system was not positive. I went to the website chose the reservation link and completed the form. I received confirmation of my request April 21st (and that I would hear later if the reservation was approved). The approval email came May 7. The reservation system should be more responsive. To the food, the pasta entry is a lot..honestly too much for one person in my opinion. None of us could get further than half way through and it seemed most people brought home left overs. There were four of us, not knowing this we ordered a salad for two to split. They did like it. I split the burata cheese with the other in our group. It also was pretty nice. But we should have passed. I know even if we skipped those we still would not have finished the pasta. The menu also notes no split plates. I get this as it's an "experience" But to me, the plates should be smaller. As I mentioned earlier, the pasta was nice but I would've liked to see more Parmesan flavored come out. It is a heavy dish and while we took home the leftovers, we tossed them. I really don't believe it will reheat well. The wine list was only fair to me, but they did tell me they are changing their supplier. Hopefully this will improve. I found it amusing that our reservation said we have the table from 7:30 - 9:00. There is only the one cheese wheel to roll around to the customers. By the time it got to us it was 9:00. So if you go for the cheese wheel prepare for a wait. So to sum it up. I thought using the cheese wheel for the pasta sauce was interesting and fun to watch. The servings were huge (really too much). I think it needed more Parmesan flavor and shaved Parmesan on the top may have taken care of that. With the one wheel it took a while so prepared to wait. The service was friendly. We are still glad we went it was interesting. But for me not over the top (and I know I am a tough critic) so 3 stars. read more

Nope. Never before have I been so disappointed in service before. Ever. Hostess was delightful. Legit. I'll invite her to the holidays at my house. This is the only reason for 1 star. It's her star. She ended up taking over in the best capacity she could to finish this disastrous trip. The server did not acknowledge our table for a bit. Busboy dropped off water and bread. To say it was pathetic is an understatement. 4 slim pieces. I asked for more and he said he needed to ask. Then server literally blows by to tell me "more bread is a dollar a piece since the owner gets it special" I decline and she leaves. No beverage order. No hello. Nothing. I see the hostess and ask her about the specials and she offers to take a screen shot and bring it to me. Do we not have this listed for patrons that are being ignored? Apparently not. Another server was kind enough to stop by and explain them. Finally server returns to engage. Drinks are ordered.... then we wait. Wait. Wait. Still no other conversation about food. Finally she comes back to apologize and offer bottled sangria since the "mixologist is sooooo busy". Apps and food are ordered since I'm aware of the time delay. Potstickers were cute. Lil Chinese take out box with sauces. Brussel sprouts were good. Cheese curds were dropped at the table in the basket.... no plate. What the ever loving f?? I'm fairly certain my brain stopped working and I'm questioning this whole thing. Drinks show up. Yay. Mules are delightful. Bourbon is good as well. There is zero excuse for water and soda not being filled asap and that was a struggle.... please. Water. Please. We wait more. Server is straight up ignoring up at this point. I use the restroom... zero paper products. Great. Thankful I run into the delightful hostess and I explain how shizzy everything is. She's mortified. mortified. Hostess swings by again aware we've been there a bit and no food. Returns to tell me it's hot at the pass and we're next up. Great. Food finally shows. My entree is wrong. Mind you... I've been dreaming about this pumpkin ravioli since I saw it posted.....I was given the lobster ravioli that had a thick dairy skin on it that confirmed it had been sitting out for a bit. I don't ever want a protective coating on my food. How that even left the pass is beyond me. At this point I'm on the verge of tears with sub par service. I've been waiting to come here for a special occasion and was so excited and left embarrassed and in tears. Also one of my dinner dates got their coffee late and cold and I was told "the keurig machine doesn't work well". Thanks server. I left without eating. My dining companions were embarrassed for me but were hungry so that was amazingly awkward. Drinks were comped. Food was not. I need to get an itemized bill to review this week to make sure it's correct. Owner was on-site but didn't come out. I ended up asking my guests to leave so I could square up the bill with the hostess and another server. Never in my life have I had such terrible service. I was so incredibly excited to come here and support local. This is a higher end establishment and it should reflect that with its service. Charging $1/ piece for bread is tacky. Telling patrons you use a broken keurig is tacky. Lack of communication is inexcusable. The hostess was amazing and it pained me to see her take this so personally. Let me start by saying that this post is a few weeks late so I apologize. I cannot recommend Black Forest Bistro enough! My family and I had gone for their special cheese wheel pasta event since I had always wanted to try cheese wheel pasta. When we arrived we immediately felt beyond welcome and almost like family (we had never been here before either), we were sat at our table and the bartender listed off the drinks and we ordered some mock-tails that were quite good, I got the drink called candyland which was a bit sweet for my taste but still very tasty (our waitress even offered to exchange my drink out). We got two appetizers, the burrata and prosciutto, and the bang bang shrimp. I loved the burrata appetizer, the honey on the prosciutto was especially delicious, my parents loved the bang bang shrimp as well. For entree we all got the cheese wheel pasta, my parents with scallops, and me with chicken. Not only was the presentation of the pasta absolutely amazing but the actual taste was to die for. I'm not kidding when I say I cried from it being so good. I tried a scallop and I they were genuinely the best scallops I've ever had, even better than Hell's Kitchen in Las Vegas! We also got some garlic bread that tasted very unique but I actually thought it was quite good, very smoky. I can not express enough how amazing the pasta was, I ate my entire plate and then ate my parents leftovers the next night. I will say I didn't enjoy the chicken that came with my pasta but it was on the side and I believe personal preference. We all then got desserts, my dad got banana foster, my mother a key lime pie slice, and me a slice of chocolate cake. I personally thought that the cake was a tiny bit too rich for my taste but that's just personal preference, my dad tried it and loved it. Overall this exerting was absolutely amazing, the few things I didn't like were personal preference, the food tasted phenomenal, and the service / atmosphere was so welcoming. This meal was on the more expensive side but I can honestly say it was worth every penny. I will 100% be coming back for more. I just want to preface that I recently had cheese wheel pasta in Osteria Pastella in Florence, Italy where I had the "Flambé tagliatelle with fresh truffle in Grana Padano cheese wheel." This review might seem a little unfair or perhaps I did not get the best experience. Overall experience: The cheese wheel experience was underwhelming and dry, but I'm giving it four stars because they seem to offer other unique flavor combinations. I would love it if this place focused on Italian cuisine. I think it would be amazing. Cost $25 per person for the cheese wheel experience. $14 for salad. $10-$45 for pasta add ons. $15 (I think) for burrata. $12 for a glass of wine. Total was $117 for two people plus a 20% tip. I also tipped the cheese wheel server via Venmo. Reservations - Easy! Make sure you make a reservation online. I don't think you can just walk in. I was able to make one about 4 days before the date. We had reservations for the cheese wheel experience on a Thursday at 5pm (when they opened) and finished our meal at around 6:10pm. Parking - easy if you're early The restaurant is quaint and has a small rocky parking lot next to it. We had reservations at 5pm (I like to avoid the crowds), and there was plenty of parking. By the time we left at around 6:15pm, the parking lot was full. Plan ahead. The place reminds me of the Hitching Post in Casamila, CA. Award winning steakhouse in California in a small little town. Staff - wonderful! Everyone was amazing. The hostess, the waitress, the cheese wheel server, additional wait staff--all welcoming and friendly. The hostess is just beaming with joy! Salad - N/A My sister ordered the Cesar salad with anchovies. I did not want a salad. If only one person wants a salad, they will make it in the back. If the entire table orders, they will prepare the salad in front of you. "Something special" - great! The chef prepared a little something special for the table. It was a bone marrow butter topped with herbs and a type of salt (smoke salt?) paired with a type of bread (again, I can't remember what kind, but it was a softer bread). I love when chefs prepare "something special for the table." Loved it! Appetizer - loved it! We chose the burrata on a bed of arugula, surrounded by peaches, topped with prosciutto and drizzled with honey. Not sure what kind of bread was used, but it was good. Maybe focaccia? Everything seemed fresh. Amazing flavor combinations! If you're open to suggestions, I just had some burrata sprinkled with black truffle, and drizzled with truffle oil and acacia honey. The other appetizer they offered was a deconstructed sushi nachos. I thought this was a little strange to pair with the cheese wheel pasta. Cheese wheel experience - mediocre Our reservation was at 5pm and we were probably one of the first people to get the experience. Now, I noticed that there was only one cheese wheel for the entire restaurant. If two hours are blocked for a cheese wheel only experience, I imagine a bunch of customers had to wait a lot longer than I did. Looking at the reviews, the cheese wheel pasta sauce looked very creamy. Unfortunately, I did not have the same experience. I ordered the truffle cream add on. It was dry. The cheese wheel was not warmed up (at least not in front of us, and the cheese was just scraped. The pasta barely had any sauce with it. When I went home, I heated the pasta with some truffle oil and it tasted better than it did at the restaurant. The red wine I paired it with was great (I'm not a wine connoisseur). Again, unfortunately, I'm comparing this experience to a recent experience a in Florence. If you're open to suggestions, here's what they did that might make your experience better: 1. Flambe the cheese wheel (in front of customers if possible). I think your cheese should be warmed up before you scrape it. The heat of the pasta and sauce was not enough. The Flambe also adds a longer experience for your customer. My sister said hers had a lot of cheese. That's not fair! Lol. 2. I ordered the truffle cream add on and it was underwhelming. I barely tasted the truffle. I'm willing to pay more than the $10 or $20 I paid if it means extra black truffle oil and sprinkles of actual truffle. 3. I don't need that much pasta. The portion is huge. 4. Longer experience. The time with the server was about 3 minutes? I'm not sure. It was very short. I was too busy chatting with the server to fully experience the cheese wheel process. 5. More cheese wheel servers. 6. I would skip using dog bowls to mix the pasta after it's been in the cheese wheel. Just use a regular bowl? read more

Like many people I saw the tiktoks and the Facebook reels showing the magical cheese wheels with pasta but I figured it was something that you would see in New York or LA, certainly not in Black Forest. This place was amazing. The food was to die for, everyone was super friendly even though it was packed to the gills and very busy. All of the customers seem pretty happy with their food, the staff didn't stop moving all night, they were bouncing from table to table to make sure everyone was taken care of. There was nothing saying it was booked or there was no availability. We get there and they tell us it was rejected. The absolute worst experience I have ever had. My friend and I had an early dinner here on a Friday evening. You must make a reservation if dining Thursday-Saturday. There was plenty of parking, although the place itself inside was very small. I was seated at a high top near the door while waiting for my friend to arrive. I looked at the drink menu and couldn't decide on a cocktail, so Amanda at the bar made a custom cocktail for me based on my taste preferences! It was delicious! When my friend arrived, we were promptly attended to-first the waters, then drink selections and appetizers. If you've been following my posts, you'll know by now that I have a weird obsession with brussel sprouts. I LOVE brussel sprouts. We ordered an appetizer of the brussel sprouts...and OMG, after they came out, I realized I should have just ordered another one for my meal. The brussel sprouts were perfectly crisp, while soft on the inside. They were perfectly dressed with a light balsamic vinegar and abundantly topped with bacon/pancetta bits. Total perfection. (Honestly, I'd go back just for the brussel sprouts). Anyway, I digress. For my entree, I ordered one of the specials: Chilean Sea Bass. First off, full disclosure, I'm a seafood snob. I grew up eating a lot of seafood, particularly fish, so I am pretty picky about how it is cooked and seasoned. Now, granted, Colorado is a land-locked state, so I have to either lower my standards a bit, or just not order seafood at all. I was in the mood for some fish, so I took the risk. And my goodness, it was totally worth it! The sea bass was phenomenal. I'll admit the sides were decent (asparagus and rice), but nothing super special. The tomato based stock that overlaid the rice was good-a wonderful balance of tart, salty, and sweet. The addition of the golden raisins to the stock was brilliant. The fish itself was definitely the highlight of the entire dish-as it should be. It was skillfully cooked to perfection where it was lightly seasoned and the meat flaked ever so effortlessly. My friend ordered another special, which was the fish and chips. He said it was really good as well. The portions are very fair, so much so that we both had leftovers to take home. The staff and the service were top-notch. The attention to detail, the homey vibes, and ambiance, were all outstanding. This has definitely made it to the top of my favorites list of places to dine in Colorado Springs. The restaurant was nice I initially. As it filled it was challenging to even talk across the table. . We had the pasta made in the cheese wheel. Apparently, they don't make their own pasta In House (we asked). The cheese wheel show was nice. The sauce was basically heavy cream with a bit of cheese from the wheel. We had the sausage as an addition. It was sausage you can purchase from Safeway. It was relatively tasteless. The bill was $160 for 2 pastas with sausage, and an inexpensive bottle of wine. What a great find this was! Neighbors rave about Black Forest Bistro so we made reservations- highly suggest reservations. They have a great patio with live music but we sat inside. Our waitress was only on her second day so I'm giving service a grace- she was clearly frazzled. We all ordered drinks- I had the Chardonnay lemon drop martini - really yummy!! Appetizers we shared a blue cheese wedge- really needed more blue cheese and dressing and the table shared crab Rangoon dip- it's served cold which I was surprised by- Rangoon is usually hot- but it was still good. Entrees I had the scallops - delish- not sure lobster bisque is on the plate- should be a curry with the white rice it is served with. The scallops were amazing!! My husband had the Korean noodle dish- he said it was in the top five dishes he ever ate!!! Dessert was carrot cake- it was all delicious. We will be back! read more

Co-worker bragged about the bulgogi here. I have wonderful childhood memories of bulgogi since my best friends mother is Korean. Unfortunately, I am now vegetarian. I insisted my husband give the bulgogi a try. Happy to see a few options for myself (Mahi Mahi, a lobster ravioli, scallops, and a sea bass special the night we went). Made reservations online, received call day of verifying that we still planned on dining at scheduled time. Staff friendly and saw good team work amongst them, helping with drink refills and clearing of tables etc. Husband ordered potstickers to start based on reviews via other yelp members. Presentation was cute, arrived in a take out box with chopsticks. Appetizer arrived quickly to table. Husband agreed with other members, worth trying. Husband was super happy with his bulgogi, he skipped the egg. Meat tender, layers of meat amongst the noodles, generous portion size. Beautiful presentation with the Mahi mahi, however, I disappointed with the meal and left a portion on my plate. Mahi Mahi was served medium raw in center (not my preference with this type of fish). Thibk it would be better served with rice rather than cold noodles. Actual meal wait time was a bit lengthy or maybe I came way too hungry. Dessert arrived quickly and was delicious, some type of peach cobbler with pecans and vanilla ice cream (special the night we went). I considered ordering another, it was that good. Wow. What a gem. I loved this place. The service was amazing - each person was so attentive. And the food was delicious. We had the stuffed mushrooms and brussel sprouts for appetizers. The mushrooms were phenomenal. We also had the chilean Seabass with orzo which was the special of the night. The dessert was chocolate hazelnut - so yummy. I highly recommend this restaurant. I will come back even though I live in California. Don't miss this special place or take other bad reviews into consideration.
