We went in November when the vines were all cleared for the season but I'm betting it's a gorgeous place to take pictures and walk around! We did a wine tasting (the Chardonnay was my favorite!) and then had a glass of wine while hanging out. It was a nice ambiance and they had lots of picnic table seating. Been going to this vineyard in Hatfield for wonderful experiences since back around 2018, regardless of weather. The grounds are superb when being outside is best. Lots of seating and tables or bring your own chairs and sit out on the very large lawn. Inside it is perfectly fine as well with all kinds of seating. The variety of events are always well done and fun. Check out the website and calendar. Lots of times there is live music. Wines are perfectly fine (red, white, rosé, bubbly, etc) and we usually buy a bottle when visiting to enjoy along with their delicious pizzas or a food selection from one of the many food trucks. The owners are fine people, Ian and Michelle. Those that work here make you feel welcomed. A real gem amongst the farms of Hatfield in the Connecticut River Valley. read more

Fun day out. We were looking for something different to try while visiting our daughter and happened to stop in to do a wine tasting. When we pulled up we found they were having their wine crush fest and had activities planned for the day. It was pricier than expected. $15 per person to come in, park and get a wine glass to use for the day. The wine tasting was another $12 per person usually the wine tasting comes with the glass so we were surprised the wine tasting was an additional fee. Regardless. They did have a nice space with food options for an additional fee. Mexican food truck and brick oven pizza. The real gem was sitting with our newly purchased bottle of wine and listening to the live music. That was very nice. They also had someone selling specialty chocolates and they were very tasty too. Black Birch Vineyard is truly a hidden treasure! It's the perfect venue for celebrations and was the best backdrop for my 30th birthday celebration, which also conveniently was the day after our wedding. The space is ideal for large groups, offering a relaxed yet beautiful setting for creating wonderful memories. Their wines are also incredibly delicious, affordable and, even though they allowed us to bring our own charcuterie board, they also happened to have a taco food truck on-site which was a convenient treat. The planning process can always seem quite daunting for large (or small) groups, but the team was superbly communicative throughout the planning process, ensuring we had a great spot and offering vineyard tours and tastings should we have wanted to take part in them. Needless to say, we all had a fantastic time at Black Birch and still talk about it. I highly recommend visiting for a glass of their Rose or Brilliant wines (or any of them honestly!) or to host an event. Michelle and the team are fantastic--the only downside is that I wish Black Birch was closer to me! read more

What a lovely vineyard! We visited Black Birch with some friends who live in the area. The price for the tasting was reasonable, and the owner was very welcoming and informative about the different wines they offer. The wines are not too sweet, and we ended up buying two bottles of chilled white wine to enjoy outside. The views outside are picturesque, and there are plenty of shady spots to sit and enjoy your wine, as well as seating indoors. It also sounds like they have live music some evenings, and I would love to visit one of these events the next time I'm in the area! read more

What a fantastic setup! We were in town recently and visited BBV on an overcast Saturday afternoon. We did a tasting and had pizza. One of the best Northeast winery experiences ever! Some things to note: 1) First time visitors should definitely do a tasting. Their wines are all very good, but a tasting will help you decide on one to settle in with! You have to try their estate Riesling, for example, to appreciate how different (and enjoyable) it is from e.g. a New York State Riesling. All of their wines are very good and you should give yourself the opportunity to explore them! 2) Order a pizza if they are there when you visit. One pie is good for 2 people. We had a white pie with pesto dollops. Seriously one of the better pizzas I've ever enjoyed! I will go out of my way to return for the pizza alone! 3) We went inside, checked in with someone behind the bar setup and then found a spot outside under the trees. Someone was over immediately to take care of us. I would follow that procedure when I return. 4) The service was outstanding! Our server was pretty knowledgeable and we did ask a lot of questions. I'm an amateur winemaker and have visited well over 70 wineries in the US and Europe, including 40 in the northeast from CT/NY to Maine. I'm very interested in the process and pretty inquisitive. If our server didn't know an answer she asked someone else. We both learned a lot! Don't be shy about asking questions. They have a lot to be proud of and are more than willing to share! 5) Parking might be slightly challenging on a busy day so plan for that. You might want to drop your guests off and then park if mobility is an issue. 6) There's very comfortable space inside the building and outside on the grounds. On subsequent visits I plan to go out and relax far away from the main area. I bet it's very peaceful. I'll probably grab a pie and a bottle to take with me. 7) The process of ordering and picking up food is not exactly intuitive. The web app is a bit klunky. You can figure it out as I did but you might have to check to see if your food is ready. 3 of us ordered separately and 1 never got a text when the food was ready. No big deal, just something to keep in mind if it seems to be taking a long time for your order to be ready. They keep everything hot and it's delicious so don't hesitate to order food here! 8) Consider joining their wine club if you have any way of picking up your wine. I joined on my phone on my way back to the car! My daughter lives close and I'm hoping she can pick up my wine (and not drink it all) when the time comes. We'll also visit regularly enough that we can swing over (and maybe have a pizza and a few glasses!). I think it's important to support a strong business like this one. They do everything right here. They hire great people, create a great product and do everything possible to ensure their guests enjoy themselves. 9) I rarely give a 5 star review on a first visit. For me, the 5th star is for a business that consistently does everything as well as you could hope for. I return and update reviews for those businesses. I have a high regard for Yelp and the huge benefit the Yelp community provides by giving thoughtful reviews. The 5th star here reflects my belief that this business will never let you down. My daughter has been here often and confirms that it is always excellent. With that, I hope you check them out for yourself and have a fantastic visit! read more

We stopped in on a whim as a local winery that was once our favorite had recently closed and boy am I glad we did! It was a rainy Saturday and this was exactly the cozy spot we were looking for! We chose to do a wine tasting which we all said was one of the most informative tastings we've ever done. This is an awesome place to hang out and spend a sunny day, out on the lawn or whatever. It was so nice that we got to bring our puppy here while we hung out and tasted some wines. We weren't in love with the wines but we are also super picky. The Eloquent Red was the best of the reds that we tried and they were a few whites that were good for easy drinking in the summertime kind of thing. Came here during covid and it really is a beautiful place with a great big lawn for you to come out and sit with friends on a nice day. Indoors is very cute too so no matter when you go you're bound to have a pleasant experience. I love that they still offer a wine tasting tasting option even if it's not the same experience due to the pandemic. I give four stars due to the wines being good but didn't try any that I'd want to actually take home. Definitely would come again though! And maybe see if they do have some of my preferred option of wines with sweeter notes. read more

My family came to Black Birch Vineyard for a wedding welcome party. The wine was delicious and the scenery was lovely, however, everyone in our parties agreed that the service was very off-putting. All of the staff were very kind except for one lady. We did not catch her name but she was older with blonde hair. She was very snarky and rude and seemed very annoyed that she had to be there. Whenever we went to the bar we were hoping she wouldn't be the one to serve us. She also closed the open bar 15 minutes early, which is very unfair to the wedding party who paid for 2 full hours of service. I would return to give Black Birch another try but hopefully be welcomed by kinder employees. read more

Wow, what an experience I had today. Myself and a few others arrived shortly after opening. We had been looking forward to going to Black Birch for a couple weeks because we planned to celebrate a birthday. So we get there, found the perfect spot, put a couple tables together, set up a table cloth and lots of snacks to enjoy while planning on trying lots of different wines. All of a sudden a very unhappy worker comes to our table and asks us how many people will be attending. We said 10... she then tells us, VERY rudely, that we MUST make reservations and ALL wineries require this with parties more than 8. Now I have been to many wineries in the United States and not once has this been an issue. She then tells us to make a reservation online.. also, very rudely. We proceed to do just that but then see there is a $75 charge for any parties larger than 8. This $75 does not include anything besides a server, which we do not need because we are very capable of getting our own wine and cleaning up after ourselves. I will never again step foot on their property. It's not because of the $75 charge, it's because of the lack of respect for the patrons that enter. This is not the only time this same person has been rude to me when supporting their winery. It is such a shame but I will not continue to support them. My party of 10 decided to go to the Glendale in west Hampton and we received the BEST service and wine. They outshined Black Birch and I'm so happy this experience happened so I could discover such a beautiful winery. read more

I hosted my rehearsal dinner here last week and could not have picked a more beautiful location. Everyone we invited raved about the beauty of the vineyard. Came here during COVID and had a great experience. We each got the tasting and enjoyed every one of the wines that we tried. We also bought some cheese and crackers from their shop and ate almost all of it in one sitting. The cheese was made locally and was amazing. Finally had a weekend off and decided to come here for my birthday. Really beautiful outdoor seating by the pond, I wish the weather was nice enough to sit out there. It seemed to be a busier Sunday afternoon but as someone who is in the industry and handles 3 times the volume, I don't understand the lack of customer service. We didn't ask questions or bother the employees because we saw that they had a full bar. We just wanted to do a tasting to find the wine we liked best so we could purchase a bottle to enjoy. But multiple times eye contact was made yet our empty glass was overlooked between tastings and another couple received attention instead. It left a bad taste in my mouth. They do have indoor seating as well and a cat that roams around which is awesome! The indoor porta potty (only bathroom) definitely threw me off. read more

Location, view, service and atmosphere were 5 stars. We had a big group and did a tasting and then each bought a glass of wine to take outside and sit in the sun. The whole experience was great. They had their dog out and about who would come over and greet people, he was a big guy but super sweet. The owners were friendly and thankful of our business. They lost a star only because it was a bit more expensive than most places. Usually you pay $7 or $8 for a tasting and get the glass free, but you had to pay an extra $3 for the glass if you wanted it. I guess it works out for the people who don't want to take the glass home with them. The tasting pours were also a little on the skimpy side, again compared to multiple other wineries I've been to. Other than that, loved the place and we hope to be back! Bought a few bottles to take home, and had a great day with family and friends. read more

Very disappointing. Location is great & wines are drinkable, but service was grudging & unfriendly. I brought some out-of-state visitors here for a relaxing, after-sightseeing experience. Tasting is supposed to be from 4:00 - 6:00. We arrived about 4:30 & a harassed looking woman said she guessed she could seat us but we'd have to be the last party because she was preparing for a wine 101 event that evening. Room was dark - not cozy dimmed lights - just dark. Evening was getting chilly but overhead door not closed all the way & letting in cold air right by our table. Took a while to receive our first pour. I asked if they still did the wine & cheese platter that they used to do, which offered a nicely presented selection. She offered a choice of one type of cracker & one type of cheese. Brought a box of crackers & an unopened tub of supposedly 'spreadable' cheese that was too cold to spread. Long wait between pours. We enjoyed a couple of the wines, but not the overall experience. read more

Bucolic. Serene. Perfection. Came here with a group of girlfriends for an afternoon of MA wine trail hopping and this was my first time to a MA vineyard. Black Birch vineyard has set the bar pretty high for any future experience. The tasting room is a cute two room wooden structure with soaring rafters. They have a huge moose head made out of wine corks. We got there just as they opened. The winery is owned by 4 people, two are a married couple who were at the register and pouring for the tasting. Very friendly people and the husband was very knowledgable and funny. They have a larger selection of whites than reds and overall, I have to say their wine is consistently good. They sell wine by the glass and bottled (chilled if you want white). We bought two bottles for lunch and our group planned a potluck picnic but lo, and behold! They have a traveling wood-fired pizza truck on premise! Had we known, we might have had pizza for lunch. I think they also did pasta. The gem in the Black Birch crown has to be the large beautiful field behind the tasting room where there are picnic tables, the wood-fire pizza truck, and a lot of Adirondack chairs. It really has to be one of the most relaxing afternoons I've had in a while. The setting lent a lot to our experience as all of us kept exclaiming how much we enjoyed ourselves here. YES! This was our favorite winery on the trail. It's as close to the vineyard feel as you'll get around here. Unfortunately they were sold out of a lot of their wines (they're very new and only produce small quantities) but the four we tasted were all delicious. We bought a couple bottles of each of their reds. This is not a fruit winery like the others. These wines are legit Chardonnays and Cab Savs. They were delicious, best wine on the trail if you ask me. They've already won a bunch of awards (hence being sold out). The winery sits atop a hill with gorgeous views of the mountains and vines. The wine tasting room is in a small old barn-like structure and it's so cute and cool. Black Birch definitely has a hip and modern vibe to it. After your tasting, you can grab a glass and sit outside at the picnic tables or the adirondack chairs. Tastings are $5 for 5 tastes (good pours!), or $8 if you want to keep the glass. 100% recommended. read more

This place was the highlight of our day trip yesterday! We pulled in to what looks like an old farm and walked up a little "beaten" path to the vineyard. There was a gentleman giving tastings outside as well as a tasting inside the tasting room as well. Since it was pleasant weather we opted to do the tasting outside. Ed (the owner) was lovely and so super friendly. We loved the wine they had to offer, it was wonderful. A giant friendly dog sauntered over and proceeded to lay right down on my feet and he was just a delight. We did the tasting as well as the $5.00 extra tasting of the Ice Wine which was lovely as well. We each ordered a glass of wine (I had Rose and my boyfriend had another white, can't remember which!) We sat at a picnic table over looking the mountains and enjoyed watching the horses across the street and the lovely scenery. The owner's wife even came out with blankets for us to stay warm, they were so friendly and made us feel so welcome. I really love this place!!! Very scenic and gorgeous view! Having spent a lot of time in California wine country (Napa, Sonoma, Alexander Valley, and Solvang), I'm extremely picky about wineries, and this is probably my favorite winery in the New England area. Most New England wineries are pretty disappointing, and I was pleasantly surprised here. I would definitely recommend the Rieslings, Traminette, and the Cabernet Franc. The Rose, other whites, and pinots were fine but I think their strength is in the Rieslings and Cabernet. All were great and we ended up buying bottles of each. Pricing was reasonable for a vineyard at $20 or under per bottle. I think my only recommendation is that the tasting fee should be waived if you end up buying a bottle of wine. This is typically the norm at most vineyards and wineries (I don't think I've ever been to one that hasn't waived if you bought a bottle), plus we would have happily used the fee to apply towards another bottle (we ended up buying half a case). Also, the restroom is essentially one outhouse. We were pretty thankful we didn't have to use it since it kind of clashes with the vineyard vibe. We definitely want to return for one of the concerts, another tasting, or a picnic with their wood fired pizza truck. read more

First stop on our daughter's #turning21 tour. This location has more of a craft brew feel, than a winery. We were planning on ordering pizza, but were told we could only sit in the tasting area until we finished our tasting then would need to move. We decided not to order, but would have had plenty of time, regrets here. The tasting was good, our server was very knowledgeable and friendly but stretched far too thin. We didn't get the "real" tasting experience, more the drop and go. The Wines however sold themselves. I generally drink full bodied reds ( which they did not have at the time) however I LOVED the 19' Chardonnay which was aged in stainless steel had a clean crisp finish with hints of fruit. In fact our whole party enjoyed this one. On the complete other side of the spectrum I loved the Ruby, similar to a port, without being overly syrupy due the much lower residual sugar. I am looking forward to this one around a fire this fall. We were able to reasonably social distance and the restrooms were immaculately clean with sanitizer everywhere. read more

This vineyard is set on beautiful piece of property and has a charming feel. Although the vineyard has not been around long, the wine was great. When we went they had one red and four whites. Although I do not drink a lot of white wine, I really liked all of them. They were dry whites for the most part and were excellent. We left with a bottle! One downside is the fact that there is no bathroom inside. Instead it is outside and appears to only have four wooden walls with no roof. This might be an issue for some people read more

My favorite part of our visit was hanging out on the patio. It was dark out, and kind of chilly. They had twinkle lights and blankets for us to snuggle up in as we drank our glasses of wine. So nice!
