Why do breakfast places continue to serve pancakes and waffles with JUST OUT OF THE FRIDGE BUTTER!? It doesn't melt, doesn't spread on the food. JUST STOP IT. Was here for breakfast and asked for pancake without powdered sugar on it (why do you docthat?) and of course it was hidden...the pancake was turned over so I wouldn't see the sugar! I'll agree with the 3 star. Cool decor, cool menu, lots of options. Big menu! Staff was awesome. Stopped in for lunch. Here is the 3 star part. Food quality was just ok. I could've cooked at home. I want more flavor out of this place. Everything is generic. Tea tasted old, fries seasoned but also tasted old, bacon in the burger all burned and black. Empty parking lots are a red flag. Everything here sucked! Got the Grizz breakfast platter. Over easy eggs were served Raw and watery. Pancakes were tough and flavorless. Potatoes were stale and tasted like they were sitting out all day. Ham, sausage and bacon were ok. Probably the only things that were made fresh or microwaved. It was my first and last time eating here. Food was way overpriced for what it was. Dennys lumberjack would have smoked this easy! Heck a taco at el rancho would have been way better for $3. Waitress Mariah was very rude to us and we kept asking for refills but she never came back to our table. We had to ask other staff for help.

The restaurant looks new and has an outdoorsy vibe. Everything looks new and clean on the inside and outside. The place was packed and super busy and bustling. I thought this was a good sign of business. After waiting 40 minutes, our meals finally arrived. I ordered the Parmesan Sourdough Cheeseburger. What I received was not what I ordered. My burger did not get made as described in the menu. There was no Dijon mustard, no tomato, the bread was thin sandwich bread and not thick cut sourdough. My cousins stated that their hashbrowns were unseasoned and undercooked and the poached egg was overcooked. The sweet creamed pancakes were just ok and nothing to write home about. I was a bit disappointed as the restaurant seemed to have a good vibe and it was quite busy, but I won't be running back to try again. As I was checking out to pay, the cashier asked me how everything was and I responded, "Do you really want to know? Because you're not going to be happy." She laughed and didn't say anything after that. It seems the staff really doesn't care for my opinion when they ask for it. Go figure. Normally I would speak with a manager, but I was on a time constraint and had to be somewhere else soon after. This is the second Black Bear I've attempted in the RGV. The other one is in McAllen. Walked out of the McAllen location twice as a result of either rude or no service. Stopped at the Harlingen location since it wasn't busy at about 9:30AM on a Tuesday. Only a few cars in the lot. This should have been a clue. When someone finally approached me at the bar, I had to repeat the order at least three times to the young server who appeared dazed and clueless. After several minutes, the food arrived lukewarm. I kept waiting for the toast but it never arrived nor did the server return. It is a quirk, I know, but I simply prefer toast with my eggs, but I am not certain I would have eaten them even with toast because of their color. They certainly were not fresh. I never received the check nor any follow up service. I went to the cashier and asked to pay for the ham, potatoes, and drink. This is all I ate. Manager was called. When she arrived, she did not say one word. She did not ask what was wrong, what was the problem or anything. Her demeanor spoke volumes as to her lack of professionalism and careless attitude for customer satisfaction. Even without being asked, I attempted to explain the problem. She rudely cut me off and simply said, "You don't have to pay anything since you didn't like anything." As I left, a witness told me that was "about as rude as [she] had ever seen." Three times is the charm.....I will never venture into any location carrying the name Black Bear Diner--just another over-priced, corporate-run folly that hopefully will have to close its doors. read more

Had heard many good things about this place. We were so disappointed. Wife ordered pot roast which arrived cold. I ordered Chicken Fried Steak" medium rare. It certainly wasn't steak. Some sort of ground and compressed meat and it was way over done. Onion rings were tough. Essentially what we got was less than stellar cafeteria food. Waitress was not very attentive, and was pretty well occupied chatting with her colleagues most of the time. Only two or three tables were occupied while we were there. Will not return. read more

I have been to other Black Bear locations and been happy with the food and service, but not this location. If this visit was my first Black Bear experience, I would never return. I will, however, never return to this particular location. There were 5 people in our party, and when the food came out, 4 of the orders were incorrect. Either the wrong entree, the wrong sides, or both. It took several attempts to get it right. One person never did get one of their sides. This very nice new facility is designed poorly in my opinion. Flow in and out with one door and foot traffic both ways was not thought about. There were four of us and our server albeit was nice just not trained. 15 min after we ordered our coffee and OJ it arrived. OJ was warm and coffee was outstanding. I ordered Benedict and it was just warm but tasty. I asked for cheese and onion on my hash browns and fresh onions and cold cheese were added after cooked??? All else was good. They need time to get brilliant at the basics. Also would have been nice to have had a chance to meet GM or manager but no visits by management to ask how things are! read more

The servers were welcoming, friendly and the service was prompt. The manager, Christopher, stopped to ask if everything was okay. They have delicious desserts such as pies and milkshakes. They also have Black Bear Diner merchandise for sale. The restaurant is clean and the decor throughout is amazing. Kitchen definitely needs some more training on food prep and temperature control on food safety.Are food was a little cold and received are meals at separate times.Service was okay considering it was not busy waitstaff was attentive.Ambiance is great considering the place is new other than that good music clean restaurant just need to be a little patient till they get a couple more months of hands on training and I'm sure it will be great. The first time we went it was ok. Had a salad, it was good but it's just a salad, nothing too hard to prepare. Service was ok. I had to ask several times for the ranch dressing but it finally came. The second time( the last time) it was horrible!!! The waitress wasn't friendly and never smiled. Never checked on us to refill drinks or see how we were doing. My daughter ordered the chicken strips, she couldn't eat them. They were cold and tasted odd. . I got the tuna melt, omg!! The worst thing I have ever put in my mouth. It was disgusting not to mention cold. The cheese had been melted at one time, but had hardened.. I waited and waited for a waitress to come back. I finally had to flag someone else down to tell them I couldn't eat my food.. They did take it off of our bill, but I will never order a tuna from them again. Today 11/25/24 training staff has left and we experienced horrible service. Waited over an hour for our food. Server seemed to have misplaced our order so our order was also wrong. Manager came and tried to apologize but apology came up short. Do not go until you hear they have their act together. Very disappointed.
