I don't come to Black Bear Diner very often. But, when I do, I order the Cinnamon Roll French Toast Combo. It is normally really good. But this morning, the cinnamon roll was overcooked - not enough to send back but I probably should have. It was dry and not enjoyable. My wife ordered a ham and cheese omelette that had way too much ham and not nearly enough cheese. And, her hash browns were also overcooked. First off, 5 stars on their breakfast menu!!! I love bringing my babies here when we're in the neighborhood. The 3 star rating was for our lunch stop this past Saturday. Service is usually good, but this was our first time stopping during lunch hour and it'll most likely be our last. We'll stick with our morning stops. Food is always delicious here. We had one waitress seat us, 5 minutes waiting and another shows up to take our drink order, 10 minutes waiting and our drinks arrive, another 10 minutes waiting and another waitress shows up to take our food order. The place wasn't crowded, we thought maybe they forgot about us? Doesn't matter, by the time we got our food, I was ready to leave. I spent more time waiting on someone to walk by so we could ask for a refill and request items, only for another waitress who was in the area to help us get what we needed and check us out. on Sunday October 26at about 2 o'clock I came to the restaurant with my Mother after the church for dinner. We ordered steak and meatloaf. After we finished our dinner wewent to the counter to pay. Finally, we walked to our Car. Once we restarted our car; I was approached by the Manager in the parking lot. He told me my payment didn't go through. I parked my car closer to the restaurant and went back in. He tried to find the ticket, he could not, but blamed me for it. I told the Manager he never gave me the ticket. He asked me where I was sitting and I took him to where I had sat. The waitress currently came to the counter and asked what was the issue. He told her that my payment didn't go through. The other waitress was at the counter and told the manager that he had the wrong person that she told him it wasn't me. I then took my Phone Checked my bank account and showed him my payment. He still responded and said, " the system was slow," I said, " no such thing." I also informed him that I'm not only pay my bill, I gave a $15 tip. This was embarrassing. I hope it wasn't because I was the only African-American in the restaurant. Whoever payment didn't go through,got in their car and left. He had the wrong person. A whole 5 stars goes to this restaurant! We got served by the Manager on Easter, blue shirt- I could not catch her name. But she was amazing. From the attentiveness and making sure we were doing okay and that the food was good, to the cleanliness across the board in terms of their prep area being wiped down and hands being washed after all messes, it's clear to see this Manager runs a TIGHT ship. I have no concerns about this place being bad at all... sitting at the bar got us as close as we could to the kitchen. The staff cooking was joyous- full of fun and laughter in the back. It was pretty refreshing to see that! Many of the other staff members came by and checked in on us when they passed by too, so it was really a good experience! The food portions are humongous... pictured is the CFK with pancakes and hashbrowns, and my military partner had to bring leftovers home (which is a first). According to him, the coffee was great and his eggs were cooked to perfection. Not pictured is my pot roast- with loaded mash and white Mac and cheese! It was all so flavorful and fresh, and the salad had no bad pieces of veggie! We finished our course with a light tasting of the huckleberry shake and carrot cake. The shake was a little light in flavor for my taste but was great in thickness. The carrot cake was an array of different textures with the raisins and pecans in the very moist cake. All this to say that this experience was well done. All props to the manager and her staff to take such a busy day and be so efficient and friendly under so much stress. The lunch rush was just winding down and the place was a blur with the team cleaning up from it. EVEN THE SHIFT SUPER was bussing tables and taking care of the customers! My wife had the Pot Roast Melt and said it was amazing. The bread was toasted with Parm to GBD, the meat was rich and succulent, the au jus was the best, so complex and rich it was the perfect match with the horseradish aioli, just delicious. I just had dental work so I had the meatloaf, tasty but not the same. I tried this place on New Years Eve. They weren't busy at all during my visit, which was nice. Only about 4 other tables occupied. They were closing early because of it being New Years Eve and were even refusing customers that wanted to dine there, after we had been seated. Our waitress must have clearly had plans, because although she was attentive, it was in a pushy way, like she was rushing us to eat and leave, so they could close. She even advised us, that the kitchen would be closing soon, so we needed to place any add ons quickly. My mom made a comment about the kitchen closing and the waitress response was, " Well it is New Years Eve, I mean...", and walks away. I told my mom, that she better not leave her smart mouth a** a tip. I ordered tri tip with mashed potatoes and broccoli....it was "OK". Not really much to say about it. Definitely a diner meal. On my way out, I noticed a section that had lotion. The lotions smelled good and I couldn't decide which one I wanted, so I purchased all 3. Smalls were $6.99 and the medium size was $11.99. I've been to almost every single Black Bear Diner location in Southern California, and this is the only location that doesn't allow me to order the chicken fried steak omelette which is a menu option during certain times of the year. So instead I have to do the "build your own omelette" and get charged about seven dollars more every time I order it. Every single other location I've been to allows me to order it. If you have the ingredients, let me order it. The waitresses are sweet and nice but the managers seem to have a problem because when I asked the lady manager about it she just looked at me dumbfounded and said "okay." read more

So I got the meatloaf instead and that was straight up hospital food! No flavor, gross and bland. My sis ordered the salmon and it was dry. Vegetables were still raw.
