I took a day trip over to Thermopolis, and I was so happy to stumble upon this adorable cafe while I was there! We came in probably 30 minutes before closing, but they still happily sat us at a table and never made us feel remotely rushed. The food wasn't anything exceptional, but it was a good solid meal. I got a Hawaiian burger. The burger was well cooked, with a great flavor. All the toppings worked well. My dad got something with bison, which was solid. Not quite as exciting as I would've expected . At the end, we ordered a mixed berry pie. So good! It came out hot with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. I didn't see a ton of food options in Thermopolis, but I've got to imagine this is one of the better ones! The decor there is super cute, as well. Definitely give it a shot! read more

Great homestyle breakfast in the heart of Thermopolis. We had read in a Yelp review about the special "Monk brewed coffee". Indeed, they serve Mystic Monk Coffee here, a small-batch coffee roasted by real Carmelite Monks in Powell, Wyoming. It's not on the menu, so you have to know to ask for it! You'll pay $2.50 a cup, but it's definitely better than the house coffee (we did a taste test). The food was great, with very large portions and plenty of condiments at the table. After breakfast, you can enjoy either the dinosaur museum or a dip in the hot springs! read more

Traveling through Thermopolis this was one of the few ma and pa places to eat. Around noon it was Super busy which was a good sign! I ordered the roast beef which came with 2 sides which I chose cottage cheese and Cole slaw from the ample selection of sides. Both the beef and cottage cheese was average tasting but the cole-slaw lacked for content. What didn't help is that I had several very pesky flies that decided to join me for lunch, and I noticed that many other tables had similar "friends"'joining them as well at their tables. So my score is based mostly on the non-invited bugs. The service and speed were both typical of diners and would have gone 3.5 to 4 if they can control the insect population. read more

This cafe is very accomodating, with a simple, but thorough menu. The food was good and definitely worth the price. We particularly liked the homemade home fries sliced thin and grilled on the flat top, without a bunch of onions, that WERE NOT the usual prefab cubed potatoes, lazily dropped in the deep fryer. But the best part of out experience was our waiter, Eric. Patient with many questions, prompt with our food, drinks and every requested item. And what is more, he watched our food being cooked and stopped the cook from putting onions in my omelette, in spite of directions to leave them out. Then, as we were hanging out in front, after breakfast, puzzled by the old building across the street with the swastikas on it, Eric came running out to bring my wife her cell phone, which she had left at the table. This place was just okay for me. We are kind if stuck here in Thermopolis, WY for a few days waiting on our motor home to be repaired after a brake line broke. Trued this place for breakfast. I loved this place. We were only in Thermopolis overnight, but wanted breakfast before we pulled out of town. I took the "make your own breakfast" option, choosing grits, a sausage patty, and two eggs over easy. It was delicious. My husband had his fav, burger and eggs with hash browns, and he said it was really good also. This is not part of the Black Bear Diner chain of family restaurants. The sign is very similar and was a little confused at first. Small town friendly cafe open for breakfast and lunch only. Had the biscuits and gravy. Portion was smaller than I was expecting. The biscuits were normal size, but so used to oversized biscuits at other places. Food was good and small town staff very friendly. The 'Monk' coffee is on the menu now. It was mentioned in prior review, reminded me to order it. We stopped here for lunch on our way to the Wyoming Dinosaur Center. Not only was the food great but it came out of the kitchen quickly and is priced fairly. The service was exceptional too. Our son has an egg allergy and the owner/cook came out to talk to us about the menu to make sure we didn't order anything with eggs in it. Five stars in Thermop. Excellent breakfast (be prepared, they are Wyoming size meaning, hearty). We had wanted to try this place for dinner but I think they are only open for breakfast and lunch. Try the green and red chili. The red is veggie style, with actual vegetables in it. I preferred the green but both were good. The cinnamon rolls are giant and good to share. Good coffee. The lunch menu looked good, too. They have a fairly large menu for a small cafe. There were a variety of pies available. Friendly service. Bison appears to be local (as advertised at the table). We didn't try any, but perhaps a good place to order a bison burger (compared to say, Safari or Pumpernicks). read more

I have eaten here twice, the first time (4 year ago) was so memerable that I needed to stop again, yesterday. I remember I had a cinnamon roll last time, there were 4 of us and we split it along with our breakfast. This visit it was just two of us and we didn't want that much food. The portion size was just right, I had Wyoming Browns, it keep me going until dinner without being over full. While fishing in Thermopolis, I visited this quaint cafe three days in a row! It was fantastic all three days and gave me a chance to try three different meals. The breakfast burrito is fantastic. Their pork green chile is on point with shredded pork instead of cubed pork which I prefer. They cook perfect sunny side up and over easy eggs. Black bears service is impeccable and they keep the coffee coming. In this small town in Wyoming there are not many choices and you CAN'T go wrong with this cafe. Very cute interior, with a relaxed "seat yourself" coziness. Excellent menu variety and reasonable prices for the area. My son and I came in for lunch, and we both enjoyed our meals. So glad we found this wonderful local cafe! Our group of 7 were on a tight lunch schedule, but wanted something other than the fast food chain option. We called ahead to tell them our situation and they were totally accommodating -- our table was ready when we walked in, the waitress took our orders within minutes, and the homemade food arrived shortly. The owners, Rick and Deb Tudor, even came by to make sure everything was acceptable and shared a bit of pleasant conversation with us as well. Then to top it off, they made sure we made it back to our bus on time! We had a fine lunch and made some new friends as well. You can't go wrong eating at this Black Bear Cafe. Was there July 22, 2017 at lunch time, Friendly staff, Clean Restaurant, waitress kept apologizing for taking so long, which they were busy. Overheard folks behind us say they had been there over an hour. We had gotten lunch Chicken Tacos/and Fish Lunch specials, which there wasn't a lot too them. No extra stuff on Tacos such as sour cream/Cheese/Salsa, Fish was just two small pieces of fish and slaw. I think there specialty is probably breakfast, which I believe is served all day. read more
