    Stone's Throw Winery

This is a great winery that happens to be in Door County. However, it is NOT a 'Door County…read morewinery'! Don't come here if you're hopping from winery to winery (you will be sorely disappointed when faced with real wine). If you've never heard of vitis vinifera, this winery is NOT for you. It IS, however, for those who appreciate fine wines (as opposed to the alcoholic fruit beverages served at most Wisconsin wineries). Stone's Throw appears to be one of only three Wisconsin wineries producing truly fine wines (along with Blind Horse Winery in Kohler and Von Stiehl Winery in Algoma). Yes, the atmosphere is pretentious. But that pairs well with their fine Zinfandel. I was so impressed, I joined their wine club. Cheers! I will work on getting them to provide palate cleansing crackers and water with their tastings, but the lack thereof is a minor weakness.

This was a tricky review to write because we so wanted to love this place! The food and wine were…read moreboth delicious, though we did wait probably an hour to get our food. Once we did eat it, we liked everything! Our main complaint was that we felt like the staff was annoyed that we were there. We came in with a reservation for 7 people and when we told the hostess they said "seven?" with a bit of a tone. We were met with several eye rolls throughout our experience, like when we asked for an extra plate, napkin, fork, and our bill (they did not bring enough for our whole party). There was nice live music being played and it's beautiful outside. There was a nail sticking out of the table and we mentioned it and they just said "okay" with no apology or solution which I also thought was odd. The stools were also pretty high up for the table, so we could not fit our legs underneath. I think our server was very stressed because it seemed to be fairly understaffed and I think that dipped into the level of service. Management or ownership definitely needs to find more staff or step in as servers, because it seemed like 3 servers were responsible for the entire place. I wouldn't be back, but I could guess the service would be better if they had more staff, which I know can be tricky toward the end of summer. It's a beautiful place in a great location, they just could use more staff so they are not so overwhelmed.

Hillside Waterfront Hotel - Romantic Trillium Suite

    Hillside Waterfront Hotel

Buyer Beware! I…read moremuch prefer to write positive reviews but we trusted these guys and they so abused our trust that I feel we should warn others. The Hillside Waterfront Hotel is not really an hotel. More like a poorly run Airbnb'? The basic functions of even the most modest hotel are conspicuously absent. At check in there was no one there to greet us, answer questions, help us orient to the area or even help us with our luggage. When we reached out for help via their phone number they were unresponsive for an entire day and when we followed up at the end of day our host chose this moment to make it clear she had more important things to do than respond to guest questions. Perhaps this kind of attitude is typical of Ephraim, Wisconsin? Other things to know: We booked a suite which turned out not to be a suite. Any seasoned traveler will know the difference. They told us they were in very high demand at the height of the fall season but the hotel was empty but for one older couple. Makes sense now. Talking of that couple we only noticed them because the lady nearly fell down the stairs backwards as she struggled upstairs with her bags. Only hosts who don't care about their guests would allow that possibility. The plumbing is terrible. The sink didn't drain properly and the toilet blocked on first use (Not our fault! We know how to care for older plumbing) and of course there was no one on hand to help us The house smells of mold. Old houses sometimes do, but it this is especially bad. Our room was infested with biting bugs! In conclusion, Door County is a stunning area and not to be missed. The same cannot be said for the Hillside Waterfront 'Hotel'.

The huge porch overlooking the lake was the perfect place for an afternoon glass of wine. The breakfasts were terrific! They also have a cabinet full of anything you may have forgotten such as toothpaste, sunscreen, bug spray, deodorant, etc. The breakfasts were outstanding! The owners are super friendly and accommodating! We can't wait to come back again!

Gordon Lodge Resorts - Views of the lake

My partner and I spent the first weekend of October in Door County to celebrate my birthday,…read morestaying at Gordon Lodge for one night. We typically stay in Fish Creek, but since we booked our trip only a week in advance, there were no available accommodations there. We decided on Bailey's Harbor instead, which is just a 20-minute drive from Fish Creek, offering stunning views of the lake, surrounding nature, and charming villages along the way. I paid $200 for one night in a Trailside One Bedroom Suite, which featured an apartment-style layout with a queen bed, a pull-out sofa in the living room, a full kitchen, parking, and a lovely view of the wooded trail area. The room was spacious and clean, providing a cozy, cabin-like atmosphere that was more than enough for two people. The property itself is absolutely beautiful, with walking trails, stunning views of Lake Michigan, and a peaceful, secluded ambiance. It also offers a dock, beach area, hot tub, and pool, all surrounded by majestic pines. We were able to easily walk to the water, the breakfast hall, and other areas of the property. During our stay, we also noticed a small wedding taking place, adding to the charming atmosphere. The only thing preventing me from giving a 5-star review is the quality of the breakfast. It was typical of a basic hotel breakfast--scrambled eggs made from powdered eggs, cereal, coffee, juice, and so on. As someone who loves breakfast, it would have been a nice touch to have freshly made scrambled eggs and hashbrowns, which would have really elevated the experience for me. Overall, I'm excited to return in the summer to take advantage of the outdoor pool, hot tub, beach area, dock, and outdoor seating. I'm also looking forward to trying the restaurant on the property next time.

We stayed at Gordon Lodge on North Bay in Door County, Wisconsin. After a few nights there I was…read moretotally rested. In fact, I could have stayed much longer. The property was beautiful and it was huge. There were options to stay in cabins, houses, and a lodge. There were also hiking trails and it sat on Lake Michigan so you could Kayak or swim in the pool over looking the lake. There were also basketball courts and tennis courts. You could basically spend your whole time on the property and have your vacation there. We stayed in Cabins. This one is the Spruce and it's where Leslie and I roomed. The cabin had 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a kitchen, living room, and fireplace. And we had a gorgeous view of Lake Michigan right out front. Everything was so quiet on the campus. It was super relaxing and I got two nights of fantastic sleep! I also have to add they have hot water and there was great water pressure. Not everyone talks about bathrooms and showers, but for me a hot shower is like a cup of coffee. I don't like coffee and I need the shower to wake me up. They had super soft towels too. This is another small thing that is huge. I can't stand small scratchy towels. These were big and fluffy They also had a buffet breakfast and a restaurant. The breakfasts were amazing! They had different buffets each morning too. I had such a great stay!
