This is a great winery that happens to be in Door County. However, it is NOT a 'Door County winery'! Don't come here if you're hopping from winery to winery (you will be sorely disappointed when faced with real wine). If you've never heard of vitis vinifera, this winery is NOT for you. It IS, however, for those who appreciate fine wines (as opposed to the alcoholic fruit beverages served at most Wisconsin wineries). Stone's Throw appears to be one of only three Wisconsin wineries producing truly fine wines (along with Blind Horse Winery in Kohler and Von Stiehl Winery in Algoma). Yes, the atmosphere is pretentious. But that pairs well with their fine Zinfandel. I was so impressed, I joined their wine club. Cheers! I will work on getting them to provide palate cleansing crackers and water with their tastings, but the lack thereof is a minor weakness. read more

This was a tricky review to write because we so wanted to love this place! The food and wine were both delicious, though we did wait probably an hour to get our food. Once we did eat it, we liked everything! Our main complaint was that we felt like the staff was annoyed that we were there. We came in with a reservation for 7 people and when we told the hostess they said "seven?" with a bit of a tone. We were met with several eye rolls throughout our experience, like when we asked for an extra plate, napkin, fork, and our bill (they did not bring enough for our whole party). There was nice live music being played and it's beautiful outside. There was a nail sticking out of the table and we mentioned it and they just said "okay" with no apology or solution which I also thought was odd. The stools were also pretty high up for the table, so we could not fit our legs underneath. I think our server was very stressed because it seemed to be fairly understaffed and I think that dipped into the level of service. Management or ownership definitely needs to find more staff or step in as servers, because it seemed like 3 servers were responsible for the entire place. I wouldn't be back, but I could guess the service would be better if they had more staff, which I know can be tricky toward the end of summer. We had so much fun here! Stopped on our wine/birthday tour. Loved the actual wine glass getting filled up rather than plastic cups like so many other places. Dan was great - super helpful and gave us recommendations for other wineries in the area. Definitely will be back! The Angelique was definitely the group favorite. read more

Stone's Throw was such a fun stop on our winery tour. We were a bit confused on where to go at first, but once we made our way into the cave like room we knew we were in the right place. This winery differed greatly from the other ones we went to. By this I mean they didn't have those sweet fruity cotton candy flavored wines. They actually use california grapes. Came here on a rainy day and had such a nice experience! The place was surprisingly busy for a Monday afternoon. Our sever was very nice. The space did cause voices to echo, so if there's a big group, expect it to be a little noisy! Wine was great and the food was too, specifically their minestrone soup! Girls weekend winery stop the last Saturday in September and my first time experiencing a tasting at a winery. We found standing room along one edge of the tasting room bar as a trio vacated. Otherwise, it was questionable how we would have fit. Physically, and with our schedule imitations. I wonder if a couple of tables worth of service could be added - there was room. Standing for an hour or so is the potential downside here. Depending on my physical status at times I would not be able to do this so that is a potential drawback I considered deducting a star for. Accessibility improvement could be done. The gentleman who served us was a very clear communicator, very timely with the pours, educated on the products. Descriptions and pricing easy to understand. I left with a bottle of Angelique as did one of my port loving friends. Other bottles were purchased as well and service and check out was superb. We were not able to partake of the picnic tables and hang out due to a dinner reservation. I would spend more time here on the next visit. A lovely setting overall. My husband and I went to Stone's Throw Winery for an afternoon wine tasting and we had a fun time. The tasting was great; we enjoyed each of the 5 wines we sampled. My favorite was Malvasia Bianca and his favorite was La Secreta. We ended up leaving with two wine glasses and 4 bottles of wine! The service was also great; the staff members are very friendly, personable, and knowledgeable. I was surprised at how large the outdoor space is! It would be an amazing event space for a party. The outdoor grounds also include an area for Bocce ball! My only complaint is I wish they offered seating in the tasting room. We stood for about an hour or so, but after the tasting, we sat outside and enjoyed some more wine. read more

We visited Stone's Throw Winery a warm, partly sunny June day, and we really enjoyed our tapas. Stone's Throw's setting is beautiful, with lovely flowers and comfortable indoor and outdoor seating. It wasn't very busy at midday on a Monday, and our service was attentive and prompt. We enjoyed the antipasti (charcuterie), bruschetta treo, and shrimp diablo tapas. The mustardo on the charcuterie was delicious (as was everything else); this was the first I'd had this kind of mustard spread for charcuterie. I look forward to returning in the future! read more

We've been to Stone's Throw Winery before and have really enjoyed the wine -- in fact, we've previously purchased cases. That's why it was especially disappointing to be treated the way we were during our recent visit. My wife, brother, and sister-in-law stopped in hoping to do a tasting, but were consistently ignored. Staff walked by us multiple times to help other groups who had just walked in, without acknowledging us or even asking if we needed anything. It felt like we were invisible. After waiting patiently and being overlooked again and again, we finally left -- without doing a tasting and without purchasing anything. Not all wineries are created equal. It seems like every tourist area (& plain ole suburb) has a cough syrup cranking establishment at $15 bottle & people eat it up. Still, I'm determined to check the local offerings. Per reviews, these guys cater to old people (cool, I'm no spring chicken) & tend to favor people who "might" buy... (again, that's me) PLUS they don't serve syrupy-sweet drinks, sticking with imported grapes from Cali & traditional processes, keeping to dry wines... count me in, we have a winner! We peeked at the products before wandering towards the bar top, where we (& everyone else) were greeted immediately and offered a tasting menu to pick 5 pours. We were given a brief overview and pens. Jim was fantastic & treated EVERYONE equally. We made our selections, sadly the malbec isn't going to be ready til 15 July - so, we had to change the game plan. We each picked 5 for 10 total. Then shared our tastes... then added 5 more, cuz the owner came in talking about his recommendations & you can't argue the owner's suggestions. We left with a bakers dozen of peppery goodness. Then stopped to get a glass for the road & try the duck & meatballs. Can not speak highly enough of either. Service was also on point. While nothing was disappointing, the real surprises were the Merlot (not usually a fan) & the Rose (another one I typically avoid) - tho I must admit I was a barrel deep by this point & will revisit when I pop the corks sober... (I once bought a jalepeno apple wine after several other tastes, 100% sure it would make great chili. It did not.) These were certainly higher in price than the spots catering to the sweet-lovers, but the price point reflected the selection well. read more

We loved this place! The ambiance was nice. We were greeted with a friendly smile from who we assumed was the owner. We ordered a meat and cheese tray for an appetizer which was good as well. However, I gave three stars due to our service. Our waitress seemed to give our table poor service for some reason. We tried to be very friendly to her because we understand how important it is. We asked to sample a few wines because it was our first time at this place and didn't want to do the wine tasting first because we needed food in our stomach. She seemed very annoyed at the ask. We also had no explanation to how the wine menu was listed. She never asked us if we had any questions about the menu. But she did ask and explain to another table in full detail. This is why we felt singled out from her. She was extremely fake towards us. Each one of us felt her vibe. Anyway, we continued to support her, assuming she was stressed. We wanted to stay but due to her lack of communication skills, we left. Beautiful place but not good service from our end. read more

The place was very nice the staff was very friendly. The food was good but the price was a little high. We ate and drank at a nice table. Then we went to the wine tasting room where they had an offering for buying wine glasses for 9.00 each when we did the tasting. We assumed they were the ones which were inscribed with the winery name. But there are the same plan wine glasses we already have and can be bought anywhere. Disappointed! A beautiful setting and a really nice modern building gave us a very good first impression which was quickly dampened by their bizarre rule that you cannot split a tasting. We have done wine tastings in California, New York's Finger Lakes and in Europe and have never come across this policy. Very off-putting. By the way the place was empty so it is not like we were taking up valuable room. We punted and went next store to their wine bar and got a glass of wine. The prices are not cheap but then again it is Door County. The service was fine as were the wines we tried. Bottom line is that we bought three glasses of wine - if we were allowed to do a split tasting perhaps we would have bought a couple of bottles instead! Pretentious. Overpriced. Unwelcoming. Just a few words that come to mind when I reflect on my recent experience. It's disappointing, honestly, because the outside patio looks beautiful and it made me excited to visit. But when we walked into the tasting room, it was full, and nobody greeted us or told us what to do (luckily our friends had already visited previously). Another reviewer mentioned they were unable to split a tasting - how odd, because I just visited this past weekend and my friends and I paired up to split a couple tastings (which was $14 to try 6 wines, btw). So that goes to show there's definitely a variety in the standard of service customers are receiving. I agree with other people's reviews that the staff seems snooty, and I did get the feeling that they were ignoring us/rude to us because they assumed we wouldn't be buying any bottles because we were younger. Well, as soon as we hinted we were interested in purchasing some bottles, Michael (our server) poured us an extra tasting, free of charge. Shocker. This review is solely based on the service, and not the wine itself. My husband and I spent the weekend in Door County for my birthday and drove by Stone's Throw. From outside its colorful and has a nice patio area so we pulled over. It was very busy. We made our way into the tasting room, and while everyone looked up and made eye contact, no one smiled or even bothered to say hello. We walked to an open spot at the bar and stood there for an awkward 3 minutes or so when an older man finally walked up and threw a menu in front of us. He didn't explain the tasting options just a brief overview of the wines offered (I.e our grapes are shipped in from California). He turned around and walked away. My husband and I just weren't feeling the vibe. We felt awkward and unwelcome so we left. I'm glad business for them is so good that they don't feel the need to be friendly to patrons. We had a party of 8 and several weeks before arriving I called to make a reservation - reached their voice mail and left a message. No return call so I called back and left another message. No return call so My wife called twice and left messages on their voice mail. Thinking that they would have called us back if there was an issue, we arrived for our wine tasting and were greeted with, you are who for what & you need a reservation for a party that size. We explained that we called 4 times. We were then allowed to have a tasting, but were told that because of our party size we would need to all have the same wines. There was one other smaller group of 3 in the tasting room with what appeared to be a very experienced host who was explaining the wines. We were no as lucky as we were assigned a 21-ish age woman who rolled her eyes at our requests. Water to rinse the glasses between wines (like the other host provided) - eye roll from the hostess, fresh glasses between the white and red wines (like the other host did) - eye roll from the hostess. She just didn't want to be there and should not be in any customer contact position. This could be a fabulous facility and it has great ambiance. But terrible service. read more

My wife and I flew out to Milwaukee and drove to Door County with some friends. They raved on and on and on about Stones Throw. We came in around 1pm and we were immediately greeted by a lady who told us some things about the winery. We then proceeded to a tasting counter where a gentleman named Tom who give us a very thorough talking to about the several different wines. He then started us with the whites. Then the reds and then the dessert wines. As we were leaving we noticed the "pour your own bottle" and my wife did that with the red blend they were offering.
