Situated in the oldest alley of Antwerp -- the beautiful Vlaeykensgang near the Cathedral -- this charming little bistro feels like you've stepped straight into another century. It's hidden down a quiet courtyard, right in the middle of the city but completely away from the noise and bustle. Totally one of those "if you know, you know" kind of places. The atmosphere here is just magical -- rustic, romantic, and old-fashioned in the best way. Even though we were seated outside in chilly weather, it still felt cozy and inviting. You could tell this was one of those restaurants that lives and breathes its history. Now, the food -- We ordered the duck breast with red porto jus and gratin dauphinois, and the beef stew. The gratin was so good -- creamy, cheesy, and perfectly comforting. The duck, though, was a bit of a letdown -- quite tough and hard to chew, which was disappointing because the sauce was lovely. The beef stew, on the other hand, came out piping hot (just how I like it!) and was hearty and flavorful, though a tad on the sweet side for my taste. Still, it was delicious overall. Service was great -- friendly, attentive, and never hovering. Everything felt relaxed and unpretentious. Our bill came to just under $100 USD, which I thought was very reasonable for the quality, setting, and experience. Tucked away off an alley, you have to mean to go here. Make sure you've got a good map app! The place is tiny and the service is spotty, but OH! The food!!! My husband had the croquettes, I had the filet stroganoff. Both were outstanding, but take this from someone who has her own delicious stroganoff recipe, this was off the charts delicious! And paired with fries - because the Belgians do really make the best fries. We sat in the tiny garden, entered through the kitchen. Tables were packed in - we had to stand to let the folks seated next to us leave - but truly charming. Do yourself a favor - come here (but pack your patience)! read more

Don't delay! Make your reservation at 't Hofke! It was by FAR the best meal we had in Anterp and actually all of Belgium!! Chef Ralph is truly gifted with creating delicious, interesting but not pretentious meals. My husband had the filet with mushrooms and the most delectable mushroom sauce either of us has ever eaten! I had the salmon which was truly exceptional and I eat salmon all of the time. Their fries- genuinely Belgian style & excellent as well. We had the "sin" for dessert which was an assortment of all of their desserts. It truly was incredible that every dessert could be as good as it was!! My favorite dessert in general is crème brûlée and theirs was the best I have ever had...not exaggerating. I was sooo excited to eat here, but unfortunately we had a very disappointing experience. :( We booked well in advance and were assured that we'd have an outdoor patio table, as the outdoor areas are very charming and unique. Unfortunately when we arrived we were told they did not have a table on either the preferred patio I requested or the other, less ideal patio that you encounter on entry. We were told to take an open table inside (which to be fair is very intimate and sweet), and then they would move us outside to the less ideal patio table when another party was done, as they were finishing up. When I asked about the more charming patio, they said they were no tables all night there. I had booked over 2 weeks prior so was surprised to hear this but we said ok, and ordered a drink assuming we'd have our drink and then move outdoors. They pressed us to order our food as well, otherwise we'd wait "1 1/2 hours" for it. So we did, and of course it came out right away and we were almost completely finished with our meals before the outdoor table was offered ... I assume this was their plan and was so disappointing. It felt like a very crummy master plan. In fairness our food was quite good (filet mignon and veggie pasta) and reasonably priced. But all in all a very disappointing experience. Bistrorant 't Hofke absolutely made my evening. A gorgeous meal in a beautiful setting with excellent service. My mom and I were on the hunt for an early dinner, somewhere nice and chill with great food near the apartment we were staying (Grote Markt area). We had been shopping and walking in the rain for hours, were soggy and tired, and wanted somewhere cozy to enjoy some wine and a meal together. It was early (630pm) and many places were not open, booked up, etc. Yelp did not steer me wrong, in fact -- it steered me absolutely perfectly right here. Entering through a passageway off Hoogstraat (look for the blackboard sign) we made our way to a lovely little place, entered through the kitchen, back outside and down into a jovial cellar of sorts. It seated about 22 people and was entirely full by the time we left. In the summer months they have ample garden seating which is both lovely and romantic. The whole setting has vintage charm and class, so perfectly Antwerpen. We ordered the house red, filet mignon and beef stew. Hearty, filling, flavorful. Portions are large, prices are not very expensive (Filet was 19 euros). Service was friendly and efficient, plus he was running up and down the stairs about every 2 minutes, so he was working for his money! We felt welcome and happy to be there. The cellar is a cozy space. *English speakers - just ask for the english menu, they have them! (and won't tsk tsk you). *Make a reservation when possible, it's a popular place with the locals.
