We were seated at an intimate table next to a window where we could let the energetic nightlife fall into the backdrop. High recommend for this reason! Finding a restaurant to choose from in old town Antwerp is really hard given the choices, but since Elfde Gebod was fully booked, De Rooden Hoed was the next choice, and I'm glad since it's a pretty good choice. The menus and the whole place all gives a Belgian seafood vibe with lots of upscale selections like mussels, steak, scampi, etc. The entire menu is in Dutch, so bring a friend or use Google translate! Much of their beer has tons of belgian dark beers and more than the food menu! I think they have 4 pages of just beers and drinks while only having 1 for food haha. We ordered the one with mussels ( gegratineerde musselen) with torched cheese on the top and the runds steak. We also downed a their chocolate and dark beer which the chocolate beer in particular is a must try. The mussels were extremely good and cooked perfectly, the cheese mixed well, and the steak was cooked rare and delicious. I did post the receipt so you can see but basically the meal with appatizer amounted to about 42 euros per person which is what I expected for a more upscale place like this. I think if you only know English it can be a challenge to read the menu, but I still recommend this spot for a fancy meal. read more

Very disappointed. Service = 2 Food =2 Cleanliness = 1 To start with, bottle of still water had a fly in it. Looks like this is a common occurrence as the person serving us was not surprised at all by it. The rabbit in prune sauce, was tough ( not at all tender as it is supposed to be) - it was more like eating overcooked chicken. This place is a tourist trap. Het was weer een zeer geslaagd Yelp-evenement! Grand Café De Rooden Hoed wist onze smaakpapillen te verwennen. Wat volgde was culinair genot. Eerst lekkere krab met groentjes en als hoofdgerecht heerlijke zalm met puree en een smaakvol sausje. Ook de wijn ontbrak niet, een leeg glas was nooit te vinden op tafel. Reservations is highly recommended for this restaurant, especially if you want to sit outside in nice weather. They had the most interesting mussel menu with variations that were not available at other restaurants. We had the mussels provencaal (tomato, leek, onion, basil, thyme, rosemary) and a l'armoricaine (cognac). It also had a very impressive beer menu and pairings. We got the large portion of mussels. And it is quite a big portion. The mussels were very fat and very fresh. Definitely order the mussels, we had the mussels in white wine. The amount of seafood consumed here on my last day in Antwerp was really gross. I ate so much that I almost felt sick but that just shows how delicious this place was. We got the seafood tower and the classic dish of mussels in white wine/garlic sauce and it was all so delicious. The service was super nice and the worst part about this place was probably the tiramisu. I would definitely be back if I were to be back in Antwerp. read more

There was no bread however, the white wine was warm by the time the food arrived and the steak was tough and overcooked. Fish knife would be nice, as would a steak knife and salt.
