Love this place. A little out of the way off the Groenplaats. Does that make it a hidden gem? I say yes. Great food. I had the Flemish beef stew and the pork cheek stew. Both were thick and super meaty in a dark gravy. The fries were quite good with both. Amazing assortment of beers. I tried all the local Antwerp bottles, plus a few on tap. Such a variety of flavors. The staff were quite knowledgeable about their beers as well, and friendly once I broke the ice. They were probably my favorite part of my visits, and that's saying something. They stay open quite late as well! I 100% recommend. I went two nights in a row, and it would have been three times, but they are closed on Tuesdays. If I'm back in Antwerp, I'll definitely eat here.

What an amazing pub! Super grateful for the recommendation I received to check out Billie's for a good selection of beer and a good time. It did not fall short of the expectation. Its a pretty small space, both downstairs and upstairs. The place was pretty packed on a Friday night, and most tables were reserved. But most patrons seemed very willing to share space at their table they were not using. The vibe here is awesome. Dimly lit, and intimate. The beer list is fantastic, as is the food. We had almost decided to go somewhere else to eat, but Im glad we stayed here for the food. The fish and chips were to die for. If you're a beer enthusiast and find yourself in Antwerp DEFINITELY check out Billies.

A surprise! We weren't sure what to expect, but we did see good ratings for this bar/restaurant. The food menu was not huge but the food was amazing and served in a very large servings! We were all happily surprised. They have specials nightly, and those are not to be missed. The vol-au-vent was super tasty. Basically it is a chicken stew poured into/over puff pastry. Everything was super delicious and lots of options for beers as well!

If you're in Belgium and want to drink amazing Belgian beer in a fantastic atmosphere without the judgment that usually comes with being a tourist, go to Billie's. My brother and I had 24 hours to spend in Antwerp and this was arguably the highlight of our time there. We arrived at the bar knowing a bit about the history involving Billie the dog, and our curiosity was piqued. When we walked in, both the patio and the bar were full but not crowded or stuffy. We were served immediately by a bartender who spoke great English and was not judging us for speaking English. She gave us great recommendations from their enormous list of beers. We even got to see the infamous Billie keeping charge of the bar! As we were consuming our delicious beverages we watched the World Cup in great camaraderie with the other patrons of the bar. It was one of the most memorable experiences of our entire trip. Although this city is packed to the brim with buildings and businesses older than life itself, this relatively new bar is an absolute must-visit if you find yourself in Antwerp as a tourist looking to get a taste (literally) of Belgian culture.

The beer bar I wanted to go to was mysteriously closed, so one Yelp search later and I was at Billie's Bier Kafetaria instead. To say it was a consolation prize would be a disservice to Billie's, because the place is AWESOME. I sat at the bar and was handed a giant beer menu. Seriously, the thing must've been like 20 pages thick. They have 11 beer taps, but I went with some more exotic (and expensive) beers. All of the bartenders were super nice (cute too). Mine recommended the Rio Reserva 2012, and it was damn near life-changing. The space is also well adorned with beer paraphernalia, including books and magazines. There are also some random games and flash cards (one with optical illusions). There's limited seating upstairs as well. That's where the bathrooms are too (they have actual paper towels!). They also serve food, but a little on the pricier end. But decent variety of hearty dishes.

This place won me over from the second we walked in. "Singing in the rain" was playing as we approached the bar where the extra nice barkeep recommended us beers and let us try them before ordering. The beer selection is great! They have an exciting food menu which we are yet to try and a magic ambience. Perfect for a date, beers with friends, dinner or whatever you want. It'll probably become a favourite and I will become a regular.

How can I ever give anything less than FIVE?! Cozy cozy cozy. Imagine going here around Christmas. The music they played was soft and old style. Selection of beers are fine and food is really good. The guy at Abbey no 8 recommended this brown pub. I love this place!

Huge selection of beer. The waiters were super kind and described the beers to us. I loved my chicken in pastry dish. Sort of like a chicken pot pie, but 100X better. My husband had the beef stew, I didn't quite like the taste, but it might just be me. I would definitely come back to try other dishes.

We LOVED Billies while we were in Antwerp. So much so that we ended up going there every night. Of course the beer everywhere in Belgium is amazing, but Billie's had a great selection of taps you won't find elsewhere. In addition their food was great. We had the pork cheeks stew and the chicken stew and both were fantastic. Wait staff was awesome and had great suggestions. And of course Billie was there (the dog) to inspect everyone. If you like beer, meat stews, and a bar dog, then this is the place for you.

Fantastic place in every possible way! It's rare while traveling for me to go back to a place a second time, as I like to experience as many different places as possible. I made it a point to come back to Billie's before leaving Antwerp. Billie's was a hit from the moment I walked in the door. I love the charm of very old places, and Billie's has it in abundance. There are mostly locals here, which is what I prefer when traveling to get a feel for how people live. Billie is actually the owner's dog, whom I met playing outside with some of the patrons on the way in. He's a riot! He has free run of the place, and will come over to say hi if he likes you :) Everyone was super friendly, from the owner to the staff to the patrons. Billie's is very popular, and most of the tables on both levels were taken each time I came. My first night I was lucky enough to get one of the few seats at the bar. The food was terrific, as was a specialty liquor of Belgium: Jenever. My next night in, the place was completely packed, and the owner asked a table of 2 if I could join them. They happily said yes, and we had hours of fantastic conversation. I had planned on a quick drink or 2, but the people were so friendly, the food so good, and the atmosphere so terrific, I stayed until almost closing time. In my opinion, this is one of the must-see places while you are in Antwerp. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Wow, from the food to the beer. The place is small and packed, which only adds to the experience. Great for tourists wanting to get a local fell of Antwerpen.

    Sour IPA. Yum.

Very nice beercafé in the heart of Antwerp. Cozy, warm and with a wide range of high quality beers.

Really delicious food in a tiny, charming, rustic old pub type restaurant. The food was traditional Belgian food - cooked to perfection!

Was SUPER excited to go to Kulminator on my recent trip to Belgium. Have heard wonderful things…read moreabout the vast beer list, full of old vintages. Sadly it seems, the owner does not like business or money. Or perhaps he just enjoys treating Kulminator as his own private club, as opposed to a normal beer bar where everyone is welcome. The owner greeted us at the door, asking us why we wished to come in and we were denied entry upon our response. We later found out that if you do not give the very specific response of "being there to TASTE (not drink) beer", you are turned away. Pompous, and absolutely ridiculous. I have no interest in trying to go back.

I was very hesitant about visiting Kulminator as its fame and reputation far precedes it, having…read morewon accolades such as "the best place in the world to have a beer" and also known to have one of the most extensive collections of aged Belgian beers in the world. During the planning stages of my trip, a lot of the feedback I got regarding this place was that I should brace for some unparalleled (lack of) service, humongous wait times in between orders, and last minute changes to opening hours. If you haven't guessed it already, I was lucky enough not to experience any of the negative feedback enumerated above, and instead had such a great time that I somehow got back to my room in Brussels without a train ticket and don't quite remember how I managed such a feat. I got to Kulminator about 15 minutes after they opened at 4:15pm and the establishment was already half-full. Despite reviews saying that this place is super cramped and cozy, the interior is actually pretty spacious with seating available at the bar, behind it, and even across from it where two tables are partitioned off kind of like a small lounge; I opted to sit in the lounge area as I was planning to be comfortable for quite some time. Leen served me for the entire evening and she was very kind and patient with all of my orders. Despite some of my orders being slightly obscure--like the oldest vintage they had of Oerbier Special Reserva, for example--all my orders got out to me under five minutes, even at 9pm when the bar was completely packed, thereby debunking the "slow and bad service" portion of my expectations. Whereas different groups of people did join me at my table for most of the night, most of them were locals popping in for a drink or two and all minded their own businesses unlike what people say about strange encounters here, but that suited me just fine for my purposes; I wanted to try some Belgian gems that aren't available anywhere on the planet, and I'm glad to say I was able to achieve said feat. I don't think I have to describe the atmosphere as it's been done in such vivid detail in so many of the other reviews (grandparents' house, etc.) but be sure to grab a bite to eat prior to visiting this place and not make the mistake of thinking drunk you will be sober enough to find something to eat after leaving this amazing Cafe; food options are limited if not non-existent, and Leen is busy enough as is keeping everyone happy. And yes, Dirk will stare you down if you do anything out of the ordinary like take pictures of the establishment, but he means well... I think.
