We have been to many restaurants in northeast Ohio and there have been only a few which were outstanding and worth recommending. Bistro on Main was excellent. Been going to BOM for probably 10 years now and counting. It's our go to place when our family gets together. There are plenty of options on the menu for everyone from burgers to a sizable New York strip. The specials we opt to select as they are consistently different and delicious. Some of our favorites at BOM include: their martini selections, BOM signature salad, roasted Brussels sprouts, plantain chips appetizer, gourmet pizza is like none other, salmon - should I go on? You get the idea. The food is great. Staff is knowledgeable and knows all the food selections and what is in each offering. They actually go through taste testing of every item on the menu so that they are fully prepared to describe each dish! Great atmosphere inside the bar as well as in the main dining room. The addition of the patio is nice too for a more informal dining option which is heated too. Reservations are highly recommended as with all great restaurants, they fill up no matter what might of the week! read more

Had been at BOM for retail wine night with appetizers, but only recently for dinner. Red Sangria was delicious but expensive at $10/glass. The house made bread was good, but rather heavy & greasy for a pre-meal bonus. Hubby & I ordered an appetizer of asparagus breadsticks with a jalapeño white cheddar sauce. It took quite awhile to get these and they were just OK. The dipping sauce was tasteless with no heat whatsoever (what jalapeño?) and some of the asparagus still had the woody ends which were not edible. Dinner was a pepperoni chorizo sausage pizza for hubby & the vegetable linguini for me. I added the rock shrimp to my dish & that wasn't a problem. We wanted to try the adult Mac n cheese, but the server checked with the kitchen and they would not allow us to order as a side dish. Husband loved his pizza (and ate nearly the whole thing himself!) and while my pasta had good flavor, the linguini was definitely over cooked. The texture was far from al dente and they had cut up all of the noodles rather than leaving them long. We split the pot de creme dessert, which was a fancy way of saying chocolate mousse. It was served very cold which lead me to believe if was all prepared earlier & put in a cooler. It was very tasty and was served with a delicious homemade chocolate crumbly cookie. All in all, BOM was an OK dining experience and we may return to give it another try but we're certainly not in any rush to do so. read more

I agree with other reviewers who've raved that Bistro on Main IS the best restaurant in Kent, OH. I absolutely love the ambiance, furnishings, excellent & creative menu items AND their gourmet presentation. Tonight I took my daughters (8 & 14) here for a special Valentine Dinner and it was a great night out for us. Although I wish some of the dishes were less oily & the tomatoes in my linguine were far less salty, the flavors are SO divinely blended I can overlook those minor offenses. Our favorites tonight were hazelnut & pear salad (PERFECT in every way with creamy vanilla bean-hazelnut dressing!!), roasted garlic mashed potatoes (the way mashed potatoes SHOULD tasted, according to my teen) and mini white chocolate cheesecake w/macadamia nut & ginger snap crust & berry coulis - HEAVENLY!!! This is one of only 2 restaurants I absolutely love in the Kent area... Try It! You'll Like It!! read more

What was most impressive was our first server's display of unprofessionalism. We had an email from the Bistro stating their adjusted deals from being closed Memorial Day and he was trying to tell us that we were wrong, finally agreed to take our drink order, huffed and then said he would find us another server and stormed off. I checked this place out on a recommendation and was not impressed. Got their signature burger and it was nothing special. Lunch service was slow (2 employees serving the entire place, running bar and seating patrons), the food was lack luster, and was barely room temp. Great service, our waitress was very attentive and made sure we were happy with everything. When my date ordered the black and blue burger, she said it was $5 since it was lunchtime on a Monday and offered the bargain burger to me as well. I was impressed she was trying to save us money. We've been to the Bistro on Main numerous times and always had a great meal. However, our last visit was awful. There were three of us for dinner. We ordered an appetizer and I bit down on a large piece of hard plastic that was in the guacamole. The server took it away and took it off our bill, which was appropriate. Then one of my companions found a hair in her meal. She showed it to the person who was bringing out the meals. He just shrugged and asked if she wanted another of the same. She said no so he just took it away. No apology, no credit, nothing. Very disappointed. Will not be going back. read more

We took my mom here for a nice bday dinner, only to be disappointed from the moment we sat down. There was a total of 5 tables with customers and we waited for almost 20 minutes for our server to bring us water. We were there another 50 minutes before we received our food, which was cold by the time we got it. My husband loved the wine soaked pears, however, we requested an order of fruit for our 14 month old son and he was brought the wine soaked pears with strawberries and blueberries. I am so thankful my husband decided to try one before we gave them to him! We were not advised by our server that the fruit was soaked in wine. This should have been the first thing he mentioned when we asked for a side of fruit for our baby! We will not be back to the bistro. Very disappointed in our entire experience from beginning to end! read more

We just got home from the Bistro and I'm getting my husband something to eat. DO NOT order the $24.95 fish fry you only get two very small pieces of fish that equals no more than four bites. My husband was complaining about what he was going to eat because he couldn't find anything on the menu and sitting next to us was the chefs mother and one of the owners and she told him the food was great and they would fix him whatever he wanted. Then the waitress told us about the fish fry special, he loves fish and ordered that. Not only was the portion small but it had no flavor. We met friends from Youngstown here two years ago and the meal was awesome so we decided to meet again tonight and he also had the fish fry and was not happy. We probably will not meet here again. I made reservations for 7 p.m., and we arrived on time, only to hear from the hostess that she could not find our reservations. When I informed her that I had made them through their website (they use "Seat Me") she told us that they don't use that anymore, but that she could probably seat us. First of all, If you don't use a service anymore that is listed on your website, maybe you should call your webmaster and make it unavailable?! Secondly, wouldn't an apology have been in order? We were seated at what seemed like a nice table. Our server was no where to be found. When she did arrive, she took our drink orders and disappeared again. It took an age for our drinks to be served. When we asked about the specials, she literally read from her notes, and gave very little detail. There were two rather uncomplicated specials. A good server, in my opinion, is familiar with the menu and can describe each dish well. We asked about a mussel and clam appetizer, which she described as a stew. When it arrived (almost 30 minutes later), it was nothing like a stew. It did have a nice taste, but we really expected more broth with a dish like that. The portion was also very skimpy. We had to wait another 40 minutes for our entrees (in the meantime our appetizer plates were not cleared). The food was cold. And so were we. There was a horrible draft in the restaurant, and every time the door opened a gust of cold air came in. After flagging down our server (shouldn't she have checked on us to make sure everything was fine?), we did receive an apology and our entrees were taken back to the kitchen. Another 15 agonizing minutes went by until our entrees appeared. My steak was ok, the garlic mashed potatoes nothing special. My husband's pasta was tasteless. While we were eating the chef/owner stopped by to give us a disingenuous apology and told us that dessert was on the house. We did not want to stick around for dessert (how long would that have taken?!), so we politely told our server that we were ready for our check. I was there in Feb. with a group of 10. We were in the main dinning room and it was GREAT! The waiter was very polite and extremely helpful. Our food was Excellent!!! I returned this past week and was not quite as pleased. We were a group of 6 and seated in the bar area. Had 2 waitresses and a waiter all taking turns with orders, refills and what evers. The pork chop was Great however the sweet potato hash wasn't, over cooked and dry. The beef rib plate was Excellent! The special that evening was strip steak, 2 in our group ordered that . My Mother asked to have the mac and cheese instead of the garlic mashed, she is 83 and garlic does not agree with her, was told there might be a slight up charge. When the bill came we were charged the full price . We also were not told the price of the specials and were surprised to find out they were the most expensive item on the bill! My husband had the pasta with mussels and shrimp , it was soggy with way too much corn in it. However the worst dish of the night was my pulled pork gnocchi , only 1 flattened out gnocchi on the whole plate and the meat was so dry, sent it back without even tasting it! I probably would not make a return visit had this been my first time there but the meal and experience that we had in Feb. was such a delicious and fantastic time that i will give this place another chance! read more
