I decided to order a Caesar wrap. I went with whole wheat option and just a 1/2 a wrap as the large soup was pretty big. After my meal was ready to go, a lady at the register motioned me over. When I went to pay, she charged me $8.50 for the (1/2) wrap + a drink, the soup = $12.75! "I ordered just 1/2 a wrap, not the whole wrap" "yes, $8.50, some items are more expensive" hmmm....this sounds fishy. Whatever I agreed to be robbed. When I handed her my $10 and $5 bill, she inspected my $10 bill with a slight rip on the edge and looked back at me. "Do you have a different bill?" O-M-G what is this the federal reserve bank?! It is usually loaded with nuts, fruits, eggs, chicken, pasta, and other goodies. Plus you get bagel chips and a free salad after 10 salad orders. The mango and raspberry vinaigrette are recommended if you're into something light and not heavy such as ranch dressing. Whoever rated this place as 4 $$$$ must be smoking something. ~$8 gets you the BIGGEST FRESHEST heaping of salad you can ever imagine. While the lines twist and turn around the small shop, it moves lightspeed because of the deft hands and persistent skills of their servers. Grab a bowl before you hit the counter- Mixed greens or romaine? $5 for a 16 oz, ~$7 for a 32 oz (the standard), and ~$9 for the 64 oz large (supersize that salad, yo!) There is precious few greens in each bowl but you will realize after the lunch dash that it is because you leave with a 3 lb bundle of YUMMY MISCELLANEOUS STUFF peppered with greens. My heart starts thumping when I reach here, because this is the starting point to one of the greatest and most majestic sprints in manhattan - ordering my toppings in record speeds less the stern servers cut me off from my precious, precious toppings. I'm thinking the Soup Nazi runs this joint. Seriously, you must get in and out of that line STAT, but they also give you UNLIMITED TOPPINGS (except for meat and cheeses) IF AND ONLY IF you can shoutout for it during those precious few seconds you're in line. Unlike other salad joints that will make you pay a small fortune if you want both the artichoke AND beets, this place will throw EVERYTHING in their rows of ingredients into the bowl if you ask right. First off: Nuts and Veggies. Conventional toppings include carrots, corn, tomatoes (dried? diced? baby?! gotta get'em all!) While less conventional delights include grape leaves, edamame salad, all types of nuts and dried fruit, BABY CORN, etc. My advice? Call them as you see them. Do not think. Just enunciate. Next: The Meats and cheeses - at least 6 different types of chicken but also lots of other goodies. They also don't skimp out on the cheese, which is a huge plus. Finally: Dressings and the finishing touches. You can chop and dice the bad boy here if you like, but I recommend keeping it intact so it can still be relatively fresh at dinner; there is no way you are finishing up the bad boy. Choose one of the 12+ different types of dressings to mix or keep on the side. Counter- Tuesdays onwards they always have BAKED BAGEL CHIPS. These things are a national treasure and come free with any salad order. Stupid delicious, I'm 95% sure they are made with yesterday's leftover bagels but who even cares?! I usually ask for 2 and finish a whole bag before I get back to my office. If it's your first time make sure to pick up a frequent buyer's card. I go here about once a week for lunch because it's so close to my office. Get yourself a small (which isn't that small) serving of the soup, and then go for a half sandwich and soda or water, which comes to around $7 with their special (you could also swap a small salad instead). The secret to getting a bigger sandwich is asking for half of the baguette as opposed to a different bread choice. Bistro's baguettes are large to begin with, and for the half sandwich, they really just cut off the end. Those regular roll-eating suckers will wonder how you got the discount :-) Oh, and in case your carb cravings aren't yet satisfied, you can also get free bread or bagel chips with the special, but you usually have to ask. Decently good deal in my opinion for all the food I ended up getting! The place is small and the lines are long, but they are very quick and efficient so do not get discouraged (or overwhelmed)! I only have gotten the salad from here. They have 3 sizes - 16 oz, 32 oz (usually the size you get at most places), 64oz. I got the 16 oz which is only $5. It comes with either 1 meat and 2 veggies, or 4 veggies. Even though you are getting a small salad, they REALLY load you up on those toppings. It's a great bang for your buck. You also get a choice of bagel chips or bread. The eggs weren't as fluffy as I would have liked, and the pan it was cooked in wasn't washed so I got remnants of other peoples meals which I thought was disgusting. The sausages were in patty form but since they were microwaved instead of grilled the moisture and seasoning had been completely lifted from the meat. I asked for my roll to be scooped out and toasted which was done without hesitation. I had hoped for more of a chewy finish to my bite but unfortunately even the bread fell short of my expectations. I came here by accident. I was lured here. I almost feel duped. Let me explain. Her body perfectly sculpted, allowed her clothes to hang perfectly. I can imagine this fine thoroughbred tortured herself with hours of devoted gym routines, complimented by yoga, and when she did consider eating she only ate healthy foods. At this point it became clear, this woman, who I was borderline stalking (mind you I looked like a terrorist in Brooks Brothers with a full beard attributed to my wisdom teeth extraction), would lead me to the promise land of lunches (or Starbucks for a f*ckin' skinny latte, which is also a possibility for this species). I was willing to take the chance, besides there was no rush to get back to work, what with the financial world coming to an end. My patience paid off, she led me to Bistro. I've been coming here every single day for pretty much the past month for lunch: basically for $9.50, you get a large salad with unlimited fresh toppings (one meat, one cheese, but unlimited veggies) which is an amazing bang for your buck when you factor in the quality and quantity of food that you're getting. This is becoming my go-to lunch spot in midtown! They have an extensive soup selection of about 15 flavors! And they let you sample it so you can find one you like- my all time favorite is chicken pot pie. The vegetable ones are good too, except for split pea which is lacking in flavor- so if I order that i have to add salt and italian seasoning of my own. The salads are great, I've been experimenting with different combos for the past few weeks and i think my favorite is kale, cous cous, tomatoes, olives, beets, breaded chicken, goat cheese and the lemon herb dressing. SO great!
