The inside has lots of seating. There is a flight of stairs to get to the washroom - just something to keep in mind if you have accessibility issues. I didn't ask if there was a more convenient bathroom on the ground floor. Servers were attentive and friendly. We got the soup, steak frites, salmon, and pork. Delicious lunch spot and very filling! We didn't eat the rest of the day after this meal and walked the city for hours! We started with the escargot, which was sooo delicious. Butter, garlicky, and cheesy. Best intro to escargot if someone is interested in trying it. It was another below freezing day in Quebec and a burger sounded like a perfect hearty meal... and it was. the burger plate was huge and the blue cheese on it was tasty. It was a slower day in the city so the waiters gave out complementary crème brûlée which was a lovely surprise. It had a nice maple flavor to make it unique. Our New Year Eve Eve dinner took place at this beautiful restaurant across from the chateau. It was magical looking at the lighted-up chateau from the window with French music playing in the background. We also got seated right next to the Christmas tree!! There was a musician played the piano. I appreciated the music and the artist so much that I was the first one to clap my hands. Everyone seemed to love their job there. The pianist played with passion and joy while the waiter was going out of his way to make us happy! When I was struggling trying to remember the name of a song, he told me it was Bésame Mucho The way of cooking seemed to be more modern than the other French fine dining places so to be honest, at first, I didn't expect I would love the food as much as I did. It was past 12:30pm and chilly rainy afternoon. We went to a restaurant near where we were and it was packed with people. We were seated at a large table and behind us, there were interesting wine displays. As soon as sat down, we asked for French onion soup. Asked how the portions is. The waitress said, it's not that big, like a cup in English with French accent. She was so welcoming and kind. So we ordered one for each but it was more like a bowl filled with rich mozzarella cheese. For party of four, we ordered two pasta dishes, a hamburger and a pizza. My dad ordered beer, mom ordered pepsi, my cousin ordered drafted beer and I ordered red wine. Food came out very slowly and we enjoyed every single bite. We stayed there for more than 2 hours to finish our food. If you are in rush, I don't recommend this place. So the food was really good and the service was beyond my expectations. Our waitress was very friendly and helped out with our drinks and food. We followed her recommends and they were awesome. The portions weren't too small so we had to take whole pizza to go. The price is rather reasonable for the location and fame of this restaurant. The atmosphere was very classy and upscaled. Full of customers so the reservation is highly recommend. We stayed at Le Château Frontenac and walked past this building with its bright red roof many times during our stay. We decided to go for a drink on our last night to cap off our stay. GOOD FOOD BUT SKIP GLOOMY INDOOR SEATING On our recent trip to Old Quebec, we dined at Bistro 1640 that is located just steps away from Chateau Frontenac. The restaurant is popular with tourists (yes - you can call it a tourist trap) and is easily found with its brightly lit red roof. Overall, we enjoyed our dinner but service and atmosphere could have been better. With the Canada Labour Day weekend crowd gone, we were immediately seated without reservations. Outdoor seating was unavailable so we were seated inside. The waitress originally wanted to seat us near the noisy bar but when we asked for a quieter table, she directed us to a table in the dark corner of the room. The worn out décor and the dim lighting contributed to a gloomy atmosphere on what was a beautiful summer evening at dusk. We ordered the Roasted French Cut Pork Chop ($36) and the Glazed Duck Leg and Fresh Pasta ($36). The very thick pork chop was moist and tender but the pork chop was covered with too much melted and grainy goat cheese. The pork chop was served with a tasty potato gratin and asparagus. We enjoyed the sweet orange glaze on the confit duck leg that was served with buttered pasta. The highlight of the meal was the Maple Syrup Crème Brulee ($14) - the burnt sugar was still hot from being torched. For Quebec newbies - note that your bill will reflect two fees - TVQ (Quebec provincial sales tax) and TPS (federal goods and services tax) that will add almost 15% to your total bill. These fees are not in lieu of your tip that is calculated on the food total only. read more

We passed by Bistro 1640 a couple times earlier in the day and realizing how popular it was, decided to look into it. The menu offers plenty of options from burgers and salads to pizzas. So, we made a reservation. Upon arrival, we noticed the patio was completely full. We were here during the heat wave, so the patio wasn't really our first choice anyways. We sat in the back room for dinner enjoying songs from the seventies and eighties and their corresponding music videos playing on the nearby TV screens. Our server couldn't have been nicer. She was kind when our attempts at speaking French failed and helped us navigate the menu too. The wine list was pretty great too. We found some of our favorites from California at reasonable prices.
