It was raining so I decided to stop in for some clam chowder and salad. Amelie's did not…read moredisappoint. I travel to main yearly and eat clam chowder. I am no expert but I know this clam chowder is superb! Oh and that slice of bread? It was like a little crispy cloud of buttery goodness. I was only disappointed my husband wasn't there to share one of the seafood boils with. This would be a great date spot. One major tip if you go: save room for a slice of the brandy walnut cheesecake or get a slice to go. You will not regret it!!!

The young owner (also the chef) seems a nice guy but he is running a bad restaurant and our (one…read moreand done) experience was a miserable one for ambiance, service and food. My husband and I went in at lunchtime (same menu all day) because I read high praise for the schnitzel here on another site and some local radio personality called it "the coolest place ever". (Who ARE these people?) It wasn't planned destination dining, but we were near the Boise mall and and I remembered Amelie's was nearby. I should have know better (but hope springs eternal) because I knew the backstory here. Let's start with that. BACKSTORY: Amelie's is the second format for eatery (if at first you don't succeed...you know the rest of that maxim) by owner Jason Wang in a building that was once McGrath's Fish House (now defunct) and became O'Crab (chain franchise) and then with this owner Country Bay Bistro, a largely seafood boils kinda place in 2021'ish. That didn't work out (for all kinds of reasons) and earlier this year the owner announced a new name, Amelie's (after his wife), that he said would be a French focused food place, to quote him, "...bringing timeless flavors and elegant French charm to Boise." Remember that mission description. What could possibly go wrong in reimagining the cavernous space, with fishing dock and net'ish decor, in that Spectrum location with a seafood boil menu and making it ""...timeless flavors and elegant French charm" ? Turns out the answer is a lot can go wrong. I feel sorry for this owner who seems a good guy, but this bad eatery likely won't last long. SERVICE & VIBE: When we arrived at 12:45'ish, a dark haired young woman dressed in all tee and pants with dark hoodie (that seemed perhaps kitchen attire) was standing alongside the host-stand talking to a man who was seated on a bench drinking coffee. She looked at us as if surprised to see us enter and after a significant pause asked "Do you want a table?" We said we did. She led the way to the dining room, which had no lights on and where we were the only customers except for a man at the bar eating a small green salad (he was still there when we left an hour later), invited us to choose where we'd like to sit among the long tables (all topped with white butcher paper like a motif remaining from the seafood boil days) or step up booths along the walls and asked if we wanted to start with a beverage. (We declined.) A while later she returned to take our orders and left the big menus sitting in front of us. I moved them to the side of the table to get them out of our way (where they remained until the check was delivered). Some time later she returned with our food in three different trips from the kitchen. We didn't see her again until my husband walked out to the front desk (to find her on the phone) to tell her we were ready for our check. When she returned to the table to bring us the check (finally picking up the menus as she said "let me get these out of the way") she asked if we needed take-away boxes since there was a lot of food remaining on both plates. We declined. This was not a person trained in food service. Not her fault. That is a management issue to provide training. About 1:30'ish, towards the end of our meal, a man in an O'Crab shirt appeared from the kitchen and, from behind the bar, finally turned on the lights in the restaurant. French elegant charm this is not. FOOD & $: The menu has several seafood options, like fish and chips and some western Euro options like three kinds of schnitzel. Since the chicken form of this is the dish to which the other diner awarded high praise, this is what I ordered. Per the menu, I expected, "Crisp, golden-breaded cutlet...topped with a creamy mushroom sauce, melted mozzarella garnished with lemon and fresh herbs". What I received was a cutlet so cooked to smithereens that it was difficult to cut, a lettuce salad on the plate (not fresh herbs) with an off taste (as if dressing had gone bad), a lemon wedge and a thick brown'ish sauce that was inedible (delivered to table in gravy boat, no less). My husband didn't fare much better with his choice. The coating on the "crispy beer-battered halibut " fish and chips did not stick to it and while the white fish was flaky it was also tasteless, almost wet textured. The best part of both meals were the French fries and that was largely thanks to the ketchup to dunk them in. The total for the two dishes was just under $40 with tax. Low prices and low quality. NOTE: The owner also advertises this as an event and wedding venue. I am not kidding. PARKING: Private lot. ACCESSIBILITY: Accessible parking in front. Tables are standard height but so close together that it will be difficult for a wheelchair user to sit anywhere but on the end of the tables coming in. LOOKING FOR CLASSIC FRENCH FARE AND CHARM?: Bacquet's in Eagle is the place.

They finish, we step up to the counter to order. The lady working the counter just stared at us. We look at her expectantly, awaiting an intro of some sort or any acknowledgement of our existence, a greeting, or to be given any instruction about ordering. 20 seconds go by of us all just staring at each other like she has forgotten what the script is. We finally are forced to just throw out orders at her non-responsive face. We joke about having waited for an intro & she continues to stare. Very strange encounter, neither of us have ever experienced this anywhere in our lives. It was almost as if she could not deign to greet us. Then when the food came out, they forgot the needed tartar sauce then did an instant 180 and walked away before I could also ask for needed silverware. Don't expect any real service here, it's like waitress & waiters light. The food? Fine & why this is a 3-star review. Not worth the experience. Won't go back. Ordering at the counter before service is served also required a tip. Asking for a tip before proving this level of service is scammy.

Going to the Springhouse wasn't actually my plan today. I headed to Hidden Springs to check out…read moreRooted which is a coffee joint attached to the restaurant. On their website, it said they closed at 2. I didn't realize that this coffee shop is only 7 minutes from my house which is a lot easier than heading down State. So, my daughter and I made our way to Rooted for an afternoon caffeinated beverage. We showed up a little after 1. Come to find out they decided to close at 1 so I didn't get a chance to try out their coffee. My daughter was hungry so we decided to head into the Springhouse to get something to eat. To be honest, their price point here is quite amusing. I get that you're in a up scale area but let's be realistic. 20 bucks for a burger? My daughter got their lunch special which was a chicken Cesar wrap and it was still 17 bucks. I wasn't in the mood to eat anything big so I got something off their appetizer menu. The fried cauliflower seemed up my alley so I ordered that as my meal. It was mid afternoon so it was pretty chill. There were a few guests dining there. My daughter and I hung out while our food was being prepared. The venue is very big. There's a nice bar area with a big screen TV. Great for conversation, drinks and football. There are a good amount of tables that can handle quite a few people. The decor was very simple country shabby. I love the old school photos of the farmhouses they displayed. I adore old photos that carry so much history. It's cool to see what life was like back then. My fried cauliflower came out first. The presentation of the fried cauliflower was rather annoying. Like they were thrown on one side of the basket cause it was just easier for them. I was also surprised I didn't get any type of dipping sauce with them. It's humorous really, 9 bucks for cauliflower and no dip. No plates, no napkins, no silverware was given when my food was dropped off. I guess we were supposed to wipe our hands on our clothes and eat with our hands. So that tip that was at the end of my transaction is for.... service? What service? I went and asked for some utensils. My daughter's lunch was dropped off after we started on the cauliflower. I can tell my cauliflower had been sitting under the heat lamp for a while. They weren't hot. The exterior of the cauliflower was not crunchy. The sauce had been sitting on the fried batter too long and it became mushy. I scraped off the mushy batter and just ate the cauliflower with no dipping sauce. My daughter's wrap looked pretty basic for 17 bucks. We also found a blonde hair in her food. We were offered a new wrap but who wants a new wrap when my daughter just chewed on someone's hair. The venue is nice. This joint has been on my to go list for a while so it was cool I got to scope it out today. But, the food was nothing special. They start the tip percentage at 20% for you to get your own utensils, napkins and beverage. Tipping is earned and or atleast be given some decent service but taking our order at the bar or dropping off food isn't service to me. I'll pass on the subpar overpriced food and lack of service. I'll stick to somewhere in my neck of the woods.

If it wasn't for the texture maaaaaybe this would have been the star of the items we had. Got the cobbler said cherry or peach, it was a pineapple cherry mix that was complete mush and absolutely inedible. Fucking joke 1/4 chicken was hard and dry af with zero flavor. I feed it to my dog Last but not least was a full rack of ribs. Tender great flavor, a bit fatty but really good. But with everything else a complete disaster it ruined the experience of the ribs. My kids couldn't stomache it and I had to order from another place for dinner. Not fucking happy. If you dont give a fuck sbout your business, shut it down then. I would never serve that food to anyone especially for what we paid for it. Yeah, I'm pissed the fuck off. Never again, period!!! If you think I'm being harsh, you are correct. It was a disgrace to soul food and anyone that would buy it.

The brisket was flavorful, the grits were good, and he substituted a biscuit for toast. Oddly, the biscuit was served completely plain. When I asked a staff member if it normally came with butter or jam, they looked genuinely confused by the question. I eventually just asked for jam, but it felt like a strange interaction. I ordered the Brisket Benedict and the Monte Cristo. The Benedict looked great when it arrived, but one poached egg was perfectly runny while the other was significantly overcooked with a mostly solid yolk. The brisket was dry, the collard greens underneath were dry, and there wasn't enough hollandaise to compensate. The breakfast potatoes were crispy and fine, but nothing memorable. The Monte Cristo was the biggest letdown. When I order a Monte Cristo, I expect something rich, savory, and indulgent. This version was made with bland white bread, the bacon was very soft, and the sandwich lacked the flavor and texture that make a Monte Cristo worth ordering. It looked better than it tasted. Service was pleasant, but no one checked on our table after the food arrived, despite the restaurant not being very busy. Had someone stopped by, I would have mentioned the overcooked egg. Overall, one good dish out of three isn't enough to make me want to return. Based on this visit, I'd give it 3 stars.

Lark & Larder is a Boise neighborhood market that opened in October 2018. Located in a nondescript…read morestrip mall, it offers "local and regional products from farmers, producers, artists and makers." Although Lark & Larder is within close walking distance of my home, I am embarrassed to share that I visited for the first time on 7/24/21. It is no exaggeration to say it was life-changing. I love the the Boise Farmer's Market (BFM) which reopened their "walk-through" at the end of May. It is open on Saturdays from 9 AM to 1 PM. The summer before last, I visited the market fairly regularly, but this summer I haven't gone once. Imagine my surprise when I learned Lark & Larder carries items from many of my favorite BFM vendors. I was elated! Lark & Larder's vendors include: Acme Bread City Peanut Kelley Orchards Fiddlers Green Farm Purple Sage Farm Ohana No-Till Farm Ferranti Fresh Pasta Brush Creek Creamery Kimberly's Best Ballard Family Cheese Mountain Valley Farmstead McIntyre Pastures Irish Dexter Grass Fed Beef Malheur River Meats Fairweather Fish Morning Star Acre The Chocolat Bar MFT Sauces Zursun Idaho Heirloom Beans Peaceful Belly/Stack Rock Cidery I was so excited that I forgot to take pictures of the two pints of Fiddlers Green Cherry and Sungold Tomatoes I bought ($4.50 each). The cherry tomatoes were the best I've eaten in years. I loved the Sungold too, though they had a much more subtle flavor. I bought snack sized bags of Roots Potato Chips, a "farm to fork" product from a small, family farm in Aberdeen, Idaho. I got one of each of the three flavors available: Idaho Russet Sea Salt, Mild Jalapeño, and Sea Salt & Vinegar ($1.29 each). All three flavors were excellent! Now I'm on the hunt for the Barbecue flavor. I bought Kelley Orchards "The Ultimate Mix" ($20), a 20 ounce bag of dried fruit that includes Pears, Pluots, Plums, White Peaches, Yellow Peaches, Fuji and Granny Smith Apples. I've bought different varieties of their dried apple rings before, but this is the first time that I've purchased "The Ultimate Mix." I love that it has no additives and no preservatives. Delicious! Olympia Provisions is an Artisan Charcuterie business out of Portland, Oregon. Their products are hard to find in Idaho. Lark & Larder carries a nice variety of them. I scored their last packet of OP Uncured Pork Frankfurters ($10.99). If you order them directly from the company, you'll pay $15, not including shipping. I noticed that on a number of other items, Lark & Larder charges considerably less than you would pay if buying directly from the vendors' website. For example, one of the Ballard cheeses I liked up was $4 less a pound. I don't know how they manage to offer those kinds of prices, but it is all the more reason to shop there. Location: 233 N Orchard St. Boise Hours: Tuesday through Friday - 10 AM to 6:30 PM Saturday 10 AM to 6 PM Sunday 11 AM to 3 PM Highly Recommended!!!
