Opened October 2019 this little local convenience market featuring local producers is getting better all the time, including more selection in freezer case of local rancher / farmer animal proteins from top quality, pasture raised and sustainable husbandry producers like Malheur River and McIntyre Family. Although this is 30 minutes from our front door, it is our go to when we're looking for pastured pork or poultry products. (We don't eat beef but they have that too.) If they had a good selection of local lamb cuts it would be golden for us - our favorite protein - but it is a harder sell for them so they carry less. (Americans consume on average only 1 pound of lamb / person / year. And about 97 pounds of chicken per person annually. Both are shocking numbers.) We purchased bone-in pork shoulder from Malheur which I boned and cut up for Asado de Bodas (aka Mexican wedding stew, I think, sort of mole meets asado de puerco) cutting off the beautiful fresh fat cap to render down for sauteing the veg, and using the bone to make a pork broth to freeze for pozole sometime in the future. And if you like to cook Italian food, Malheur made jowl bacon (otherwise known in Italy as guanciale) this winter which was sold here and is THE perfect thing for carbonara and Amatriciana sauces. My Brooklyn born hubby is Italian heritage and grew up with an Italian speaking nonna in the kitchen so we have used a lot of guanciale - not in Boise though where it is hard to find - and this is the best we have ever used. Still not carrying much fresh market produce but they have added Acme Bread to the line up and on Saturdays I think Acme rotates in a special kind of loaf. From time to time they have had "meet the maker" tastings on Saturdays for some of the vendors they carry. And here's a tip you'll thank me for - if they have local Morning Star Acres jam on the shelf, buy it. Especially the huckleberry! SERVICE: The owner is on site almost all the time, very friendly, very responsive to FB messaging if you have questions about something in stock and always able to help by phone too before making a trip if you're looking for something specific. SET UP: Small but with a good expanse of windows it is light and bright and well organized with refrigerator / freezer case along one wall, larder / pantry shelving next to that with food products for sale and other items - like local artists and crafters goods for sale- also placed around the store. ACCESSIBILITY: ADA parking correctly designed for van access striping on the passenger side adjacent to building. Small ramp up to sidewalk. All on one floor. Ample floor clearance. The loo fails ADA and Idaho code compliance with counters and towel dispenser too high. The eat in counter has only high stool level seating so inaccessible. The ADA is 30 years old in July and it is past time to get this right everywhere for equal access. (Yep. I have a dog in this hunt since I have had MS since college.) LOCATION: In the Bench neighborhood right across from Idaho Youth Ranch thrift shop and just next door to a Vincent St. Paul sales store. PARKING: Private lot has about 15 parking spaces. read more

Lark & Larder is a Boise neighborhood market that opened in October 2018. Located in a nondescript strip mall, it offers "local and regional products from farmers, producers, artists and makers." Although Lark & Larder is within close walking distance of my home, I am embarrassed to share that I visited for the first time on 7/24/21. It is no exaggeration to say it was life-changing. I love the the Boise Farmer's Market (BFM) which reopened their "walk-through" at the end of May. It is open on Saturdays from 9 AM to 1 PM. The summer before last, I visited the market fairly regularly, but this summer I haven't gone once. Imagine my surprise when I learned Lark & Larder carries items from many of my favorite BFM vendors. I was elated! Lark & Larder's vendors include: Acme Bread City Peanut Kelley Orchards Fiddlers Green Farm Purple Sage Farm Ohana No-Till Farm Ferranti Fresh Pasta Brush Creek Creamery Kimberly's Best Ballard Family Cheese Mountain Valley Farmstead McIntyre Pastures Irish Dexter Grass Fed Beef Malheur River Meats Fairweather Fish Morning Star Acre The Chocolat Bar MFT Sauces Zursun Idaho Heirloom Beans Peaceful Belly/Stack Rock Cidery I was so excited that I forgot to take pictures of the two pints of Fiddlers Green Cherry and Sungold Tomatoes I bought ($4.50 each). The cherry tomatoes were the best I've eaten in years. I loved the Sungold too, though they had a much more subtle flavor. I bought snack sized bags of Roots Potato Chips, a "farm to fork" product from a small, family farm in Aberdeen, Idaho. I got one of each of the three flavors available: Idaho Russet Sea Salt, Mild Jalapeño, and Sea Salt & Vinegar ($1.29 each). All three flavors were excellent! Now I'm on the hunt for the Barbecue flavor. I bought Kelley Orchards "The Ultimate Mix" ($20), a 20 ounce bag of dried fruit that includes Pears, Pluots, Plums, White Peaches, Yellow Peaches, Fuji and Granny Smith Apples. I've bought different varieties of their dried apple rings before, but this is the first time that I've purchased "The Ultimate Mix." I love that it has no additives and no preservatives. Delicious! Olympia Provisions is an Artisan Charcuterie business out of Portland, Oregon. Their products are hard to find in Idaho. Lark & Larder carries a nice variety of them. I scored their last packet of OP Uncured Pork Frankfurters ($10.99). If you order them directly from the company, you'll pay $15, not including shipping. I noticed that on a number of other items, Lark & Larder charges considerably less than you would pay if buying directly from the vendors' website. For example, one of the Ballard cheeses I liked up was $4 less a pound. I don't know how they manage to offer those kinds of prices, but it is all the more reason to shop there. I love popping in here from time to time because they always have something special or new or local or tasty (or all of the above) that I just have to have. Today, I grabbed the Cabruca Chocolate Salami. I know, it sounds crazy, but it is oh-so-rich dark chocolate, with dried fruit, nuts and just a hint of spices that reminds you why they call it salami. I like the location. I like the convenient parking. I like the layout indoors; it is simple yet appealing. I like the owner, a very nice young woman, and I hope this business flourishes.
