Although this is 30 minutes from our front door, it is our go to when we're looking for pastured pork or poultry products. (We don't eat beef but they have that too.) If they had a good selection of local lamb cuts it would be golden for us - our favorite protein - but it is a harder sell for them so they carry less. (Americans consume on average only 1 pound of lamb / person / year. And about 97 pounds of chicken per person annually. Both are shocking numbers.) We purchased bone-in pork shoulder from Malheur which I boned and cut up for Asado de Bodas (aka Mexican wedding stew, I think, sort of mole meets asado de puerco) cutting off the beautiful fresh fat cap to render down for sauteing the veg, and using the bone to make a pork broth to freeze for pozole sometime in the future. And if you like to cook Italian food, Malheur made jowl bacon (otherwise known in Italy as guanciale) this winter which was sold here and is THE perfect thing for carbonara and Amatriciana sauces. My Brooklyn born hubby is Italian heritage and grew up with an Italian speaking nonna in the kitchen so we have used a lot of guanciale - not in Boise though where it is hard to find - and this is the best we have ever used. Still not carrying much fresh market produce but they have added Acme Bread to the line up and on Saturdays I think Acme rotates in a special kind of loaf. From time to time they have had "meet the maker" tastings on Saturdays for some of the vendors they carry. And here's a tip you'll thank me for - if they have local Morning Star Acres jam on the shelf, buy it. Especially the huckleberry! SERVICE: The owner is on site almost all the time, very friendly, very responsive to FB messaging if you have questions about something in stock and always able to help by phone too before making a trip if you're looking for something specific. SET UP: Small but with a good expanse of windows it is light and bright and well organized with refrigerator / freezer case along one wall, larder / pantry shelving next to that with food products for sale and other items - like local artists and crafters goods for sale- also placed around the store. ACCESSIBILITY: ADA parking correctly designed for van access striping on the passenger side adjacent to building. Small ramp up to sidewalk. All on one floor. Ample floor clearance. The loo fails ADA and Idaho code compliance with counters and towel dispenser too high. The eat in counter has only high stool level seating so inaccessible. WHAT IT IS: Being unsure how to describe the business in a Yelp summary, I sat on my fingers for a while. Then I read that they consider themselves a "farm fresh convenience store" and I thought that is perfect. There's the description. WHAT'S IN A NAME: The name is a composite of color and powerful, copow. The owners' philosophy healthy food seems to be, in part, that eating the rainbow is a good thing. That's my lane too. WHY I'M A FAN: Three visits in and it makes me want to sing, apologies to Etta James, "At last, my convenience eats have come along..." This because I am one of "those" who wants to know where the food I'm going to eat comes from and what is in it (you know that comedy bit in Portlandia, "Tell me about the chicken", yep, that's me) so I almost never buy convenience meals. One spot of ADA compliant parking across the parking lot. Inside has ample clear floor space between aisles. I didn't check the loo. The coffee counter is not ADA compliant as it is all high seating. ADA is a 36 year old civil rights law and requires that IF you are offering seating for customers then some of it must be at accessible height for equal access. DELIVERY?: I think delivery of the meals is being considered. Since it is a considerable drive from my front door to theirs, if they delivered meals, I would buy more often. THIS N THAT: * On Saturdays there are in-store specials that change every week. For example, $2 off any purchase. *If you're here then you're not far from great local bakery Glutonia and it is so worth stopping there for bread or pastries. And if someone asks you a question and you say "I don't know," that shouldn't end without a sincere effort to find that answer. Learn about your job so you can answer that question next time. "I don't know let me find out for you/figure it out". Try to find a solution for the customer. I don't know is another excuse to do the bare minimum. This type of stuff wouldn't fly 10 or 20 years ago, bring back good customer service in 2022. These guys are not the only ones who do this; its pervasive. It's natural that if you don't improve at your job you will be even more miserable. Just some life advice. Plus, someone could be having a really bad day, and just a simple smile or friendly demeanor could mean a lot. We opted for the non spicy version but there is also a spicy version for those that prefer the added kick. I have never seen dried squid come in long sheets like this before at the other Asian markets that I have gone to back at home in Los Angeles. The squid was good with a light sweet tomato flavor. It had a nice light chew as well. If I lived in this area, I would be back to purchase more snacks and drinks. I would probably also consider purchasing some of the frozen seafood too.
