We really, really wanted Biryani Pot to be good because we are severely lacking in Indian cuisine in LA. But we get there and we order water, they bring us Luke warm bottles of the cheapest water you can buy. Okay, this is not a good beginning. We take a look at the buffet and it looks pretty decent, but I like lamb or goat vindaloo which wasn't on the buffet. Additionally, my wife likes to order a meal so she can have leftovers. Top that off with the fat that the buffet is 20 bucks which is more than most of the meal offerings. Now, we have a plan. Order off the menu. So we did. The lamb vindaloo was okay. Not real spicy, and it was odd that they didn't ask us a spice level. My wife had the butter chicken. I know, I know. The garlic Naan, 8 bucks worth, was good but no garlic taste or aroma. The rice they serve I hate to say looked, felt, and tasted like minute rice. If we can cook basmati or jasmine rice at home, then step up if you run a restaurant. Finally, we pay and my wife goes to the restroom on the way out. She gets in the car and says, "Roaches". I looked at her and said "What?!?" Yep, when she turned on the bathroom light, roaches ran everywhere. Enough said! read more

The curry that I ordered had big chunks of onion in it and I was unpleasantly surprised. The nun was very good and the biryani was fairly decent, but it was very clear that the food was being cooked to cater to a demographic rather than to remain authentic to its roots. read more

We used to love having lunch here, but today was huge disappointment. The selections were very limited vs precious visits. The buffet was very low the whole meal. We had seen billboards advertising Biriyani Pot but could never track the place down. We looked several times over the last year and could never find it. That's because I kept going to Downtowner Loop not Downtowner Boulevard. Boy am I glad I found the place tonight because it was a HECK of a great meal. While there's not much to the outside of the building, the parking lot is nice, with the majority of the parking behind the building. The inside is plain, but absolutely spotless. And what it lacks in decor is more than made up with the wonderful aromas that greet your nose when you walk in. We were seated immediately at a nice, wide, comfortable booth. Menus are brochure style and don't always give a great explanation for the food, but their website does it justice with photos of everything you can expect to find on the menu. Drink orders were taken immediately upon seating. I had a mango lassi and it was deliciously tart and sweet. We had trouble deciding what to get as there were so many delicious options. For appetizers we chose the Bhel Puri and the Paneer Masala Dosa. I love Bhel Puri and this did not disappoint. It was a great mix of puffed rice, crunchies, tomatoes, onions and cilantro with a bit of heat. Absolutely the best Bhel puri I have had. We had never had Dosa and were surprised at how large it was. It was a meal in itself. The Dosa was filled with paneer and the most delicious potato (aloo) mix I have ever had. I will get the aloo by itself next time as a meal. The Dosa was served with three sauces: a peanut sauce we didn't care for; a spicy ginger sauce that was just delicious; and some sort of chutney that was oh so good. We should have known we would over order, but I ordered Baingan Bharta and my wife the Shrimp Curry for entrees; along with some garlic naan that we just have to get any time we can. My dish had a deep, smoky flavor and the baby eggplant was tender and elegant. The Curry that my wife had was extra spicy (as requested) and mouth watering good. I'm not vegetarian (yet) but enjoy a good vegetarian meal. This is the place to do that with an expansive list of vegetarian options. Service was good. Again, I just wish folks would clear plates from tables. It's becoming a lost art. Price was around $50 for more food than 4 adults could eat. Should you try it? Don't ask silly questions and just go. And don't forget to visit the Indian grocery in the back when you are done eating. read more

Awesome buffet, lots of choices and fantastic food. My favorite was the butter chicken, but my wife refused to pick a favorite between the bhuna chicken and saag bahji. They were very clean and served from the buffet. Servers with glove handed out dishes and utensils, very sanitary. This was a great way to keep proving wonderful food in a safe way. My friend and I stumbled upon this new spot purely because it's on Yelp and we were looking for something new. I've eaten Indian food before but not so much in Mobile. We were very pleased with the meal and left with tight belts. We chose the chicken tandoori half chicken, chicken Biryani, veg kadai masala and a couple of papadoms. He also got a mango lassi drink which was very fresh and thick and delicious. (I stole a sip while he washed up). The flavor on the tandoori was excellent. The biryani rice had 3-4 different rice colors, saffron yellow but some others which gave nice mild but complex flavor. The chicken inside was whole pieces on the bone which was a bit of a surprise, probably next time I will order boneless but we tore into it anyway. The veg curry was different than I expected, I anticipated tomato base chunky and it was yellow smooth glossy but my friend was crazy about it. The food came with dipping side sauces so I requested a couple of papadom although I didn't find them on the menu. The texture was more like a giant potato chip and those disappeared quickly as well. Next time I'll order two per person. The dining room is new and sparkling clean although probably next time I'll get delivery since I live downtown. I took a menu home with the leftovers and I'm already scoping options for my next meal. This is a locally run small business that dared to open during the covid pandemic so I encourage all of you readers to check them out because I want them to stay in business. I drove by this place a while back and made a mental note that I wanted to try it. But then I forgot all about it. I don't visit the Downtowner area often so it's easy to forget. We walked in and right away I was struck by the cleanliness, particularly now during the pandemic with everyone being short staffed it seems most restaurants aren't putting much emphasis on dining room cleanliness, ironic during a rampant virus, I know, but it is true. This place, on the other hand, was immaculate! We were met at the door by a soft spoken and very polite man who showed us to our table. The dining room was very bright, open and the seating was clean, comfortable and in great condition but not what you'd consider luxurious by any means. There was a huge TV over our table playing Indian music videos that we found fascinating. The glamour, the dancing, the lyrics (subtitled at the bottom) I couldn't pull my eyes and ears away. It was similar to pop music and dancing here in the States but somehow the music was a lot less annoying, almost soothing for a lack of a better description. I was already in a good mood because of the cleanliness, the friendliness, the attentiveness and the music and then to my delight he handed me a drink menu! Yes, they serve alcohol! The food is incredible and the service was great. They serve alcohol but not cocktails, however, they will serve shots with a delicious Indian soft drink chaser that you can mix at the table. Each of the ladies at the table had one of these and the men chose beers. They have quite a few Indian imports, other imports as well as domestics. They also serve wine and Prosecco. I absolutely love spicy things and for me the hotter the better so their "spicy" heat level was perfect for me, but others who ordered spicy at the table found it to be a little too hot, especially the soup. The good news here is that you can order to your heat level preference, just know "spicy" is very, very hot. The Tandoori Chicken was really flavorful, something I think everyone should try. It is served with a thin mint sauce on the side which was a pleasant surprise, like a breath of fresh air amongst all the spices. We also ordered the Wok Fried Chili Potatoes, spicy. They were like a home style version of hot fries and we loved them! The Chicken Vindaloo was delicious, the Goat Curry was spectacular but by far my favorite dish of the night was the Butter Chicken! If you love garlic like I do, do not miss the garlic Naan--it is to die for! Thinking over last night's dinner, I honestly can't wait to go back. I want to try all of their menu items under "street foods" next. I am pretty sure this is going to be one of my staple restaurants now. If I had one wish for a change to this restaurant I would wish that they could make, at least, a portion of the dining area a little more opulent and better suited for an intimate date night, business meeting or adult get together. The somewhat plain, very open, bright, dining room is the only reason I held off a star, but if that's the only thing I'd wish to change at this restaurant (and I'm admittedly picky) you should definitely go check it out, you won't be dissatisfied with food, service, quantity, quality or cost. read more

I decided to give Biryani pot another try. Actually, my mom decided to bring me home food. Idli is supposed to be fluffy, soft, and easily breakable. When I opened the to go container, I was immediately confused. Idli is supposed to be WHITE. My Idli, as seen in the photo, is brown and crusty. When I touched it, it wasn't soft at all. I tried to break the Idli into pieces and it was very dry. The edges were super rough. I took a bite and frowned. I was brought back to the memory of finding OLD Idli in fridge. They either burned the idli or gave me a few days old idli. Both are unacceptable. When we called, we were told "if you take it home, it'll be dry." This isn't dry. We had samosas, Rogan Josh (goat), lamb vindaloo, butter chicken and chicken Tikka. All of them were 5 stars, I would actually give the butter chicken 6 if I could! They skimp on ingredients and then they take an attitude about it when you call them out on it. Ordered Paneer Methi Malai. It had eight small cubes of paneer. Onion Methi Malai would have been a more accurate description. The main ingredient of a paneer dish is... paneer. Not so much here. When asked a server said all paneer dishes only come with eight pieces. So if you want to pay $2.00 for each small piece of paneer you'll be ok eating here. Should have looked more closely at the reviews before eating here. They apparently skimp on main ingredients in several dishes. If they would have just fixed the issue without attitude it would have been ok. The small server that wouldn't give his name was very rude to my wife. Less than $.25 worth of ingredients would have solved the problem before it started. Those same ingredients and some basic manners would have solved the problem after it occurred.
