We are in search of perfect balance of them. Here: Shell: Double tortilla! yey - with robust, earthy corn flavor. Fried crispy!! Meat: Tender and pieces are chunkier than other places, which is my liking. Topping: Plenty of coriander!! Chopped onion's size and amount was on point, giving it a perfect texture. Consomme: Too hot. Dipping resulted in kind of killing of the meat/corn flavor. So, we decided not to dip, but it is sad as the dipping is the main pleasure of eating birria for us. 1 star was taken due to this consomme. They said they don't accept the coupon no more, PROBLEM is the coupon never had an expiry date listed on it or any text saying to indicate that it will be useless after a certain date. What's the issue? It's just one free taco in exchange for the coupon I was given before. Just honor it and don't worry about future coupons because they won't be offering those anymore. Would introduce more customers through word of mouth if it's good. But no, this location they're too cheap/petty to honor 1 taco. So instead, I recommend against going to this location for tacos, and if they decided to 'make up' for it by contacting to give said taco. Forget it, it's too late. But if you haven't had birria tacos before, they are pretty special. Beef stewed in spicy broth and served in a crispy taco shell - heaven. Add some of the broth to dip into on the side - yum! This place has renewed my faith in tacos outside in Toronto. I've eaten a lot of them in Mexico and have found it tough to find that level of perfection. This place is the bomb! The tacos come quick and hot which is critical. They're SO generously stuffed with moist and meaty birria stew. The tortillas are crispy and chewy at the same time. LOADED with cilantro and onions. Chef's attention to every taco and every morsel is clear and appreciated. We were a little confused by the menu at first... because we wanted to share the 5 taco combo plate but it said one broth. But they were cool with us sharing and we both got a cup of it! Good thing, we would be FIGHTING over this brother, so good. We shared a gringa, too, which was also delicious (beef and cheese). We loved Birria Catrina so much we came back a few days later with family from out of town. We made them walk 30 minutes to get here down from Dundas West. Was once a favourite but SO disappointed when we went this week. They painted over their lovely mural and suddenly the lights are insanely bright white. Are they owned by Gus' Tacos now? That's what they look like. The vibe is ruined. No more liquor license so no more Modelo or margaritas either. The food was still good but seemed to have dropped off a little. The meat was a bit chewy and broth not quite as yummy. Not sure if I'd go back again. Really missing what they used to be and the flavour isn't calling me anymore. read more

I'm in the area once a week for my baby's swim lessons. One time I was about an hour early to the class so we explored the area. I have been intrigued by birria tacos for a while so this place immediately caught my eye. It only took about 6 months to finally dine here! Last Sunday my husband had an errand at the Home Hardware on Roncy. I decided to take advantage and suggest eating lunch in the area too. We ordered the birria tacos and the gringa. Both were very good; however, I think I may like the gringa better because there was a lot of cheese in it. The tacos were also good with hot sauce. Even my baby approved; I had made a sandwich and cut up fruit, but the beef in the tacos were more desirable. Service was excellent. The decor is very casual and there are maybe 3-4 tables max. My daughter has been bugging me to try this place. It is street parking only and TTC drops you close to the front door. It is a small place but the service is fast and seems to be a steady flow of people. Had the tacos and they wear really good. Just went here yesterday & ALREADY dreaming about the next time This is a legit Mexican birria beef stew resto with a short menu, but its really all that you need. Our small group ordered Combo 1, Combo 2, Gringa + a couple of Jarritos including tamarind & strawberry (Mexican pop, they probably have the most variety of flavours in the city) + a pizzadilla to go (forgot to take a pic of that one) The beef consumme is the dip for the beef stew tacos (supported by slightly cripsed 2 corn tortillas & comes with side slightly hot sauce, cilantro & chopped onions). The quesadilla version is as the tacos, but with cheese. The pulled beef was fresh, soft, seasoned & oh so flavourful. Not dry, tasteless nor overcooked that it could be from other lesser than places. Combined with the slight crisp corn tortilla and dipped into the beef consumme ... its what dreams are made of! Tip: Street parking only! I've had birria tacos one other time before, so I'm in no means an expert. The only guy who was working cooks & also serves. This was shortly after lunchtime and there were no other patrons inside. He was very friendly and efficient! Menu is 1-page, front and back, and it's pretty succinct - they primarily only serve...birria tacos. If you don't already know, they're stewed and shredded beef tacos served with a consummé broth. They also had "combos" which is a few tacos + broth + a coupla small, spicy salsas - they were light orange in colour, so probably some kinda pepper. Not sure why they're called combos 'cause they didn't come with a drink. I got the $27 combo which came with 2 cheese / 3 plain birria tacos. It was good enough for 2ppl as a light lunch / snack. Btw, you use your hands, so be prepared with the sanitizer! As for the taste, I preferred the cheese ones. It added more flavour. Not that the plain ones weren't flavourful, but the cheese were just BETTER! Beef is, as to be expected, tender 'cause it's stewed. The tacos themselves weren't as grease laddened as the first time that I had birria tacos at another place. I did do the dip, but I didn't feel as though it added much to the tacos. Instead of a red tinge at the previous place, the consumme was just brown and it was SUPER salty with a bit of a sour kick at the end. Lemon/lime? If you look up pics of birria tacos, the broth is supposed to be red with a healthy layer of oil on top. That's the way I had it before. So not sure if they did something different here. They lacked the juiciness that should come from the meat and consome. The side of consome I received tasted like tomato sauce if anything and just bland. Friendly staff and delicious food. I was the only customer for my visit so it might be different when it's busier but the server was helpful and offered some good recommendations. I wrote a review of my experience at this restaurant approximately a month ago. My experience was VERY NEGATIVE and involved one of the wait staff laughing at the fact that after us waiting 2 hours for our food to be ready for pick up they informed us that "they had no record of our order. On Feb 21st the owner responded to my google review and accused me "of plotting with others" to hurt his business and then said that he would be suing me (and these others presumably) and having us "charged". I can assure you that I was not "plotting" to harm his restaurant but merely voicing my displeasure at what was extremely poor service.
