Simply amazing. Visiting from out of state. Found the Birdhouse through checking here on Yelp. Lucked out walking in without a reservation (Thurs night). They do everything right. The food, the staff, the atmosphere/lighting, and cocktails. We can cook pretty well ourselves so we don't go out to eat very often because it's often a disappointing experience (to not be disappointed a restaurant really needs to get everything right). The Birdhouse didn't disappoint in any way. The cocktail, the chicken, the 3 sides we shared, and the olive oil cake were all excellent. We left sated but not stuffed because the food isn't heavy. We live in New England otherwise we would definitely be back. We'll savor our memories! read more

What a hidden gem! Birdhouse was incredible - wonderful and cozy vibes, service, and delicious food. I tried the salad, quarter chicken, carrots, and bread pudding - everything was well seasoned and flavorful! The chicken basically melts in your mouth and the carrots have a creamy sauce that elevates them. The bread pudding is also covered in a bourbon glaze that was perfectly balanced. Had a wonderful dinner here with a friend. The inside of the restaurant is inside of an old house, creating a small, charming, and cozy atmosphere. The server provided an overview of the menu and specials after we were seated. We shared the Half Chicken, Potato Gratin, Macaroni and Cheese, and Broccoli Rabe. Every dish was lovely, except the Broccoli Rabe, which was a bit too salty. A farm-to-table Southern comfort restaurant in town that's well worth the visit. read more

The owners are so kind. My wife's favorite dessert is their olive oil pound cake. They were kind enough to make my wife an entire cake for her birthday. They even let me take it home in one of their pans! The cake was excellent. I could not thank the Birdhouse enough. read more

Every. Single. Dish. Incredible. We literally ordered almost everything on the menu and licked every plate clean except the cabbage between just the two of us. The absolute musts were the chicken confit, polenta, celery salad and chicken. But we really also did love how fresh the green salad was and the potatoes au gratin were also amazing. My boyfriend really enjoyed the cabbage but I could have done without it. Flavorful, a little pickled, a little sweet and a little spicy. If you're in Charlottesville - this is a must try spot. All in all a wonderful meal. We started with a great tomato, pesto, burrata salad and then shared half a chicken, broccoli rabe and corn all of which were excellent and finished with a fig tart with a scoop of lemon ice cream. This cute nook in the old Ace's bbq on Henry Ave is highly recommended. We ordered take out since there no reservations available. Food was hot and delicious when we picked it up. The side dishes are for sharing. So we ordered a 1/2 chicken to share with broccoli rabe and potatoes Au gratin. Also the posole soup and dessert of the day. Came by the other night with my family and we were all disappointed with the food. The chicken breast was dry. The chicken confit was bland and honestly kinda gross because it was served on toast in a pool of oil. We were sat outside at a picnic table that had no shade. Our waitress was very inattentive. I went into the restaurant twice to get their attention. The first was to ask for a fresh plate as the confit made the plate oily. The second time was to ask for the check. read more

Tried birdhouse for the first time. Service was good. The place is cute and small. No AC but it was still comfortable. The macaroni and cheese broccolini and potato gratin were really great. I am a pescetarian and I always order the collards and pretend I don't see the bacon--but it's just so yummy that I can't resist. A tiny, perfect, wonderful restaurant. Probably about 10 tables total, and a few seats at the bar. True to its name, chicken is the focus of the menu - rotisserie chicken (quarter, half, or whole bird) and excellent sides (potatoes au gratin, greens, garlicky beans, etc.) Add the excellent celery-and-olive salad and grilled sourdough bread and you have yourself a meal.
