We just happened upon this place as we were in the joint parking lot of Can a Brotha Get a Slice…read more As I was paying for our pizza, a lady approached me asking whether we wanted cheesecake. I was a little confused but I quickly learned that The Cheesecake Empori-yum is a distinct business. The woman was a friend of the owner and she kindly walked me through the cheesecake options that were available. I was debating between the white chocolate triple berry and the pineapple upside down cake for my husband and the snickers and red velvet for me. I went with the daily special - pineapple upside down cake - and red velvet. The cheesecake slices were $5.15 each, which was perhaps a little hefty for the size of the slice but still reasonable I thought. The pineapple upside down cake cheesecake came out hot. I was told that the cake portion had just been baked. I must admit that it looked very different than what I was imagining it to look like (i.e. Cheesecake Factory) as the cake was falling apart. We refrigerated it for a few hours before trying it so that the cheesecake portion would be cold. While good, this dessert very much looked and tasted like cake and not cheesecake. There was also a texture issue for me as it was all very soft versus having distinct cake and cheesecake textures. We thought that the red velvet cheesecake was more successful. It was rich and creamy and the red velvet flavor came through nicely. The slice held up well and had a nice Oreo crust. It was perfectly baked. We were rushing some so I didn't see the full menu. Next time, I'd love to try the soul food egg rolls!

As a lonely…read moreCalifornia transplant years ago, I remember feeling a little uneasy about the prospect of being in such a new place without any of my normal comforts -- including my favorite places to get comfort food. Naturally, one of the first things I did was seek out some new local places to fill the role of my favorite spots back home. This search led me right to The Cheesecake Empori-Yum; after all, what could possibly be more comforting than a cheesecake? I can definitely say that I found what I was looking for. I may have had better cheesecake experiences in the past, but certainly not by much -- it's hard to exaggerate how good the cheesecakes are here. I might recommend trying the original in addition to any specialty slices you order, just to give yourself a benchmark. The last time I visited, I went with the Reese's cheesecake -- peanut butter fiend that I am, I ordered a peanut butter cheesecake with chocolate crust, crushed Reese's Cups, and chocolate drizzle was only right. It was wonderfully dense and beautifully creamy, just as always. I did wish that the peanut butter flavor of the cheesecake itself came through more, though; the peanut butter notes were overshadowed a bit by the stronger chocolate flavor from the crust/drizzle. Although the cheesecakes are fantastic, I think the best part of all is the amazingly friendly service. You often here the phrase "service with a smile," but here you will find that to the tenth degree. The owner is so very friendly, and it's evident she puts her heart and soul into everything she makes. A little shop with a big heart... you can tell each item is made with love. Come by for a slice... or three. I won't judge.

What makes it even more sad is this restaurant has been around for years; it's not like they've been in business for a week and don't understand customer service. I arrived at 11 am to place a to-go order, and there was only one table who placed their order before mine. My order was nothing cosmic; in fact, it was straight off the menu except for "holding the mayo" on one of the sandwiches...two fried green tomato BLTs and two bonbons. I paid (and even tipped) for basically ordering at the counter. I did receive the two bonbons right away because they were already available in the bakery. Then I sat and waited...and waited...and waited; you get the idea. More patrons arrived and were seated. They ordered drinks and food; the dining room was filling up. And still, I waited. After 30 minutes, I went back up to the counter to ask when the order would be ready and didn't really receive a clarifying response other than a shrug and we're working on it. I sat back down...and waited. In the following 10 minutes, I saw customers who arrived well after me receive their plates of food. There was meatloaf, salads, and other sandwiches being served. Finally, my patience having been worn thin, I went up to the counter and politely asked for a refund unless the food was ready for me to take. It was not. I was told "we are short staffed" as the reason why four pieces of bread, some bacon, and a couple fried green tomatoes could not be produced in 40 minutes. They begrudgingly gave me a refund, but did keep their tip. In the words of Gordon Ramsey..."what a shame!" It was my first visit to Shashys and will also be my last.

They were constantly out of things that you were asking for that were on the menu. The chef was having a bad night. The food was not worth the price. I ordered overpriced truffle fries and literally received crinkle cut fries with some type of truffle oil on them, which were totally different from another table, not far from mine who ordered the same thing and got a totally different style of fry. I don't understand how you serve two different types of fries for the same item on the menu. It was way overpriced for the experience received. They were using staff from upstairs at the bar and the night just was not great at all. Unfortunately, it did not impress the guests that were from out of town as well. I will say the interior design is very nice but for such a new restaurant I was very surprised at the experience. I think this restaurant may be going through a lot of launch and staffing challenges.
