Key lime shake with whipped cream and graham cracker.
    Dan T.

Finally stopped by Billy's today. Excuse the lackluster pic, but some meltage had already started to occur. The hard pack in the case looked like Blue Bunny, but I was more interested in the specialty flavors like the lemon soft serve I saw a couple gentleman try. I settled for a medium key lime shake and Heather went with a small oreo cone. $7.50 total before tip. The key lime shake was topped with whipped cream and some graham cracker. It was every thing I'd hoped it would be. Cold and refreshing with a classic key lime taste. The inside of the shop is kind of small with a counter that matches, but the service aspect was huge. Smiles the whole time. The woman working the counter (the owner I assume) and the young man working with her did a fantastic job. The menu is extensive with a few food items along with the ice cream. Billy's is right off the bike trail and has plenty of outside seating with a couple of small tables on the inside. I don't get over to Adel very often, but that lemon soft serve is on my to-try list now too.

Really nice place for ice cream! Usually there's not much of a wait and they have lots of cool flavors to choose from.

We loved the look and feel as we walked up to the building and felt that the overall experience was well above average. Our only 'beef' was that most of the unique beers listed on their table menus were not available - tap options were limited to a few domestic beers, which was disappointing for restaurant with "Tap" in its name. The perfect evening on the patio and quality of the food offset this disappointment though. For our dinners, I ordered the Smachos (see picture) and asked to have them delivered as an appetizer - as I wasn't that hungry. My wife and one of our neighbors each ordered Tenderloins (see pictures). All of the food was delicious and highly recommended. We especially enjoyed the Smachos, which had pieces of their smash burger included in the toppings and were fantastic for sharing. While it is a bit off the beaten path for those of you living in Des Moines, it is only about 10 minutes to the West on a divided highway. We found the peaceful charm of the shaded patio next to the brick street out front contributed to a nice dinner with our friends and enjoyed the stop. Amazing. The tenderloin was massive. And the broccoli cheese soup was a star. Tried the peach pie as well which I thoroughly enjoyed. I fully expected the place to be packed as it appears to be pretty much the only show in town as far as a sit down restaurant. There was a please wait to be seated sign there as we walked in. We were greeted right away and seated in minutes. It's old school wood tables and chairs and I think there was a counter available. Ordering is done at the tables as well as settline your bill up with your server. Surprisingly the speed of service continued throughout the visit. After drinks we ordered the rodeo burger and fries, a tenderloin with chili cheese fries, and the garlic cheeseballs. The cheeseballs came with marinara and ranch. Fresh, hot, and fantastic! I've eaten a lot of tenderloins. Many that have been highlighted as Iowa Tenderloin Trail winners or participants... This is one of the better tenderloins I've had in the state! Obviously hand made, breaded, and fried. Not too thick and not too thin. Drained properly. Served with the essential condiments including the holy trinity (onions, dill pickles, and mustard). The gf liked her burger. It could have used more of the featured ranch and bbq sauce. The fries... Neither of us cared for them. Obviously hand made, but almost too thin and too greasy. We'd both opt for a different side next time. To each our own though. Almost every small town along this stretch of I-80 has a pub & grill. The menus vary a little, but are very similar in a lot of aspects. The quality of service and the cooks make the biggest differences. The Chuckwagon hit five stars in some aspects of both. Work on those fries and the flavor of the chili (horribly bland) and this review would have been five stars. I'm going to emphasize this again. Truly one of the best tenderloins I've had in the state! Keep doing what you are doing!

Executive Chef/Managing Partner Jenny Symonds took over The Handlebar back in April I think and she brought her experience and a new menu with her. Being a little bit of a foodie I've followed Jenny through four previous steps in her career...so it was only a matter of time until I made it down to The Handlebar. Pulling in The Handlebar has an almost country market look to the property rather than a restaurant. It's cute. A HUGE parking lot, a large patio, and accommodations for bicycles. The decor inside is tasteful and modern. The dining area looked clean. Darn near spotless. A hostess greets you as you walk in and seats you. Along with a lunch and dinner menu they also offer a full bar. Seating inside is low top table and chairs and a bar and bar stools. A server both takes your order and presents you with your bill at the table. The menus aren't overwhelming but still cover all the bases (apps, sandwiches, other entrees, pizza, etc.). Comfort food to a few Asian spin/fusion dishes that I've come to expect on one of Jenny's menus. Today I ordered the bike tire tenderloin with a side of cucumber salad and a soda (Coke products) for dine-in and an order of the raspberry cheesecake egg rolls to go. Steve Roberts has a very good tenderloin just down the road in Redfield (Dexfield Diner & Pub). He has some BPT competition here...! The Handlebar's tenderloin is a little thinner but bigger around... There's a reason they call it the bike tire... They offer a second bun at no extra charge. Served burn your mouth hot and still steaming. Drained properly. Absolutely no residual grease to ruin the experience. I saw quite a few of them walked by me by staff today; you can tell it's a popular item. Both great tenderloins! And if you like tenderloins you should try one of each... Courtney was my server today and she did an excellent job from start to finish! I was surprised to see the amount of staff on site on a Sunday. There were at least four servers...maybe five and Chef Ryan was in the back. Evidently they haven't heard about the staffing shortage other places are having. Just kidding...! I'm sure they have...it's just not something they seem to be struggling with right now. The cucumber salad was cold and fresh. A nice break in between bites of the tenderloin. I wish the portion of the salad had been just a little bigger. I grew up in a town like Dallas Center, Actually quite a bit smaller than Dallas Center...but the same demographic of people (minus the bicycling community). A Casey's, a small downtown, and a smattering of businesses, and no stop lights. I was a little bit worried for The Handlebar venture with the changes Jenny might bring. Would she be able to please both the newer generation and maintain the older regulars? Yeah...I overthink things sometimes. I could tell by looking around today that it appears she has been successful with both. Older gentlemen (probably farmers taking a break from harvest) enjoying a Sunday meal by themselves and some with their family. Bicyclists both on the patio and dining inside... Dallas Center is a nice little community and especially pretty right now with it being Fall. I'd love to tell you those raspberry cheesecake egg rolls made it back to Clive...but with all transparency they only made it down a couple of side streets and around the city park. They are amazing! I've had them before. They were on one of Jenny's previous menus... Feel like getting out of the Des Moines metro for dinner? Enjoy the Fall colors and make the drive down to Dallas Center and check out The Handlebar! I know I'll be going back! That hot beef stack on the dinner menu... The picture of it on their Facebook page sure screams... OMG! Like and check out their Facebook page for hours, additional details, etc. https://www.facebook.com/thehandlebardc/
