I recently went to doctor cavalli for a crown, after my root canal procedure. He is definitely the best dentist I've been too. He's very caring and does an excellent job explaining every step along the way. He's also very considerate of his patient's situations. Actually had a legitimately meaningful talk with him during the whole cleaning/checkup, which I definitely don't normally expect from a dentist visit given the whole "can't talk with my mouth open like that" bit. The quality cleaning and nice conversation we had were a testament to both his skill as a dentist and to his character as a person; he really took patient care to a whole new level. I have had Dr. Cavalli for about 3 years now. He's the only dentist I have had who actually cleans my teeth (not a dental hygenist). He tends to be very talkative as he cleans my teeth so I know what is happening. I have been to some dental offices that are h---ell bent on polishing ALL your teeth before allowing you to rinse, but not Dr. Cavalli. I can rinse half way and at the end. I know this issue isn't a big deal for a lot of people but for me, I start gagging if I don't rinse at the half way point. I haven't had any issues with him. I've also seen him when I didn't have dental insurance and the cost for a cleaning is about $100-$110 which I feel is very reasonable. I believe he only accepts Delta Dental insurance so if you have PMI, you'll have to pay out of pocket. read more

What a great experience, and worth the wait! After a bad experience with a dentist (too much pain with a simple procedure, coupled with the feeling he was trying to sell me on procedures that I didn't actually need by telling me my mouth was a giant cavity ready to explode) I was afraid to go the dentist. I read Dr. Cavalli's reviews here on Yelp and decided to give him a try. He found that my teeth and gums were in great shape and found the work that I did have done (one of my 2 fillings was replaced) probably didn't have to happen. Set your mind at ease with Dr. Cavalli. I found Dr. Cavalli my last year at Berkeley and I unfortunately moved and haven't been able to see him. He has a small office with one receptionist only. At that time, the receptionist wasn't the kindest on the phone but she got the job done. I was always scheduled promptly (I recommend calling 1-2 months ahead for a routine cleaning since he's busy!) He would always gently clean my teeth himself (no hygienist!) and do a thorough exam all within 30-45 minutes. I never had to wait more than 5-10 minutes to see him, he was always very prompt. He's a great dentist and I've recommended him to multiple friends who have all liked him and had more complicated dental procedures done. read more

I don't think I've ever said that I had a "great experience" with any dentist (let's be honest, it's not usually fun) but Dr. Cavalli was absolutely great! Super thorough, very friendly, welcoming and definitely quirky (in a charming way). Since I was out of insurance for a couple of years and hadn't been to a dentist in a while, he was careful to check all of my old fillings to make sure they were still holding up. I had to wait almost two months to see him, but considering how we all know what it's like to have a bad dental experience, I didn't mind the wait for a good experience. I felt the lady who picked up the phone was too cold and was wanting get off the phone. She told me that the practice was not accepting any new clients. I have been a patient of Dr. Cavalli for years, without much complaint as a regular yearly cleaning dentist. He is kind and helpful. I have never had any major work done from him, so I couldn't really comment on his performance with these tasks. However, something really bizarre occurred during my recent visit. I had divulged issues I had been having, which seemed very directly sourced from two fillings I had replaced from amalgams to composites several years ago. He said he was concerned but apparently did not have the capacity to decipher the problem. Instead he referred me to an endodontist. I went to see the endodontist , who discovered one of the fillings was cracked and the other one had a cavity adjacent to it. I called Dr. Cavalli back to inquire about him possibly performing these services. But when I inquired about which composite material he used- as I try to be careful and cautious about what materials are placed in my mouth- the response I received via his receptionist relaying Dr. Cavalli's response, was that he no longer was using composite and had gone back to only using amalgam!!! This being only two weeks after I had spoken to Dr. Cavalli about the subject- a conversation in which he stated surprise that I even had amalgam placed for fillings, stating how amalgam was more-or-less obsolete in the dental field having been replaced as a standard by composite. I was so confused. I called back and left a message requesting Dr. Cavalli to return my call to help explain this bizarre 180 response. I have yet to receive a phone call.. read more

A composite filling fell out on a front tooth that I had cracked in a sports accident. Dr. Cavalli saw that I had University of California student insurance, and strongly encouraged me to get a veneer (involving significantly grinding down the front of this tooth). He said the insurance would cover this entirely, so the fact that it is far more expensive wouldn't be a problem for me. However, when they did billing they said "oops, it turns out this isn't covered, but we'll do you a favor and charge insurance for two cavities, and then you'll only owe $1000". This was a significant unexpected expense because it amounted to a large part of my monthly income. Also, this veneer fell off a couple of times before a different dentist resized it. read more

Got a referral from a friend, it was just meh. Office lady was a bit snooty and curt. Overall, its certainly nothing to rave about.

I have no idea why Dr. Cavalli has such good reviews. I have to say he is a very nice and caring person, and he even suggested me not to do unnecessary work my former dentist said I should do, but that's it. Dr. Cavalli's office is incredibly old; the patient's chair is cracked in some parts and there were even blood stains on it! and Believe me or not he does not have a computer, so of course he cannot perform digital x-rays, so be ready to do everything in the old fashioned way and forgot to have you x-rays emailed to you, since of course he does not have an email. However, I would not care much about his office if he performed good services, but his tooth cleaning was just awful. He performs cleaning in the old- fashioned way, no ultra-sonic, so of course the cleaning is much more painful. Moreover, he left many stains between teeth which my other dentists always took away with ultra-sonic cleaning. The cleaning was just terrible, one hour for an awful result I'm still full of tartar and stains on my back teeth and between my front teeth. Lastly, despite the very poor old-style piece of equipment he has, he charges you just like any other dentist in the area, so there is really no advantage to go to his office, instead of a more modern and clean office. I do not understand how people can be happy with his services: they have never been to a state-of-the-art dentist or they just do not care about having stained teeth after a cleaning. read more

My husband and I ,had a scheduled appt for a cleaning in the latter part of Dec.2015.this was shortly before Dr Cavalli' vacation was to take place. Just as we arrived,there was a massive power outage for the entire bldg that lasted about 40 minutes. Because of this,Dr Cavalli could take only one of us,in our time slot. I let my husband take the time and I waited for him. Both Dr Cavalli and his asst/receptionist ,Deanna ,are wonderful,caring people,that do their very best to take care of your dental needs in a timely fashion. Dr. Cavalli told me that I would be first on the the list when they had a cancellation. A cancellation never came up that I could make on short notice ,so Deanna called me to tell me that Dr Cavalli would take me "after hours""(which he certainly did). What two wonderful ,dedicated people and how lucky we are to have him as our dentist. read more
