George, who I believe is the owner, was extremely helpful and put my bike together when it arrived boxed up from the states. This is a fantastic bike shop, with a nice selection of bikes from cruisers to roadies to climbers. They also do repairs on bikes, for what seemed like reasonable prices to me. George told me he would have my bike finished within two days and I got a call 7hours later that it was ready, so not only are they reasonable but timely as well! If you are a novice cycler or a pro, West End Cycles is worth a visit!

This is a a very good place with excellent services and very help but I just bought some brand new…read moreschwalbe lugano tyres 1 day ago and went out the next and got a puncture in them and on closer inspection one of the tyres seemed to have a manufacturing flaw and seemed slightly frayed in the inside of the tyre wall at one particular point which was a little disappointing for less than a day old tyre. Ok I could have possibly gone over something hard but i was road biking and on the road. This is a very good shop overall but on this occasion was disappointed. I got a new tyre at Magic Cycles at Bowling and even he said the tyre was frayed/damaged.

I only ended up here after my man wanted to check out what they had on offer. He bought a bike a…read morewhile ago but he's not 100% happy with it so was looking for some advice. The guy was brand new and knew his stuff. He used to volunteer but managed to secure some funding to get a full time position. His passion for the project really came across and made you also feel enthusiastic. They are based just off Argyle Street, West End side, and is a fair size. I couldn't stop gopping round the place. It's a pretty cool establishment and I love the fact that it's a social enterprise. There's a front and back workshop, sales floor and a mezzanine level storing more bikes. There's also a sewing project enterprise on the mezzanine, I can't remember what they were called. The guy said there was talk of turning part of it into a cafe, I think this would be a fantastic idea. I hope they do. They take in old bikes, work their magic and produce just like new bikes. They had some quite decent ones on display but note they do change frequently. I saw a cracking pink one for £75. Ooh tempting! I do have a bike, one I've had from my early teens and it's alright. I would like to get it checked though and see if it's road worthy as it's longing to be ridden. They can help you or you can have access yourself on certain days for £4 per hour and use the facilities to fix up your bike yourself. It's a great idea and I highly recommend popping along. Now I am no biker, I know very little about bikes, the world of bikes or even the world of bike shops. But the guys behind the counter are really friendly and made me feel very welcome as they explained the basics. If you are interested in buying then they will walk you through and they don't push a sale. Gear also sell all manner of bike accessories, from lights and helmets to pedals and pumps. If you ever find your bike in need of some love, they also offer bike repairs and tune-ups at a very reasonable price. Though because they are well known in the area you may have to wait a few days before it is ready. What I really love about the shop is the biker community vibe. They leave a pump outside the store for anyone to use and they have helped a friend of mine with his breaks for free. Gear also sell pocket cycle maps of where best to go for a bike ride in the city so if you pop by I highly recommend that you spend £5 on that little gem.

Ok, it ain't exactly huge inside, in fact its kind of amazing that anything can actually take place in such a small space. However, the smallness also adds to the Aladdin's cave feeling of this place and makes you feel like your in a proper bike shop where you can smell the WD40 and tyre rubber. Now i think we all appreciate that your big stores can offer greater variety and probably better prices than any of these guys, however i'll bet you that they cant offer even half the amount of expertise. And lets face it, places like Halfords are always based out in these massive retail parks where you need a car to get to...what self respecting cyclist drives to get his/her bike....apart from me. I like this place, it fits the picture in my head when i think of how a bike shop should look, therefore it suits my needs. Oh and its also in a great location for a test drive of your new or recently repaired bike, what with the river pathway just down the road, or alternatively you could chain it up outside North Star and head in for a coffee.....

You look down and then you see that your tyres have been burst by the glass you thought you cycled over 500 yards back. Luckily for me I was on Queen Margaret drive when this happened and I was able to go to Bike Love and get my bike repaired. The owner is not the friendliest of people but he was happy to fix my bike in a 24 hour period and it only cost £10 - which is not bad for a new tyre plus the labour. He also called to let me know that it was fixed. Last year I was in the market for a new bike and when I went in I was surprised when he offered to get me one for £100. He stressed that this would be the most basic off basic models but in the end I decided against it as I got a cheap second hand bike. Still, it was nice of him to offer.

Turns out that it is Go Green Week and Glasgow University Environmental Club and Glasgow University Climate Action were doing stuff including inviting De'ils on Wheels along to fix bikes. They are a Charity that does stuff like recycling bike parts; cycling events and activities; training courses for cycling on road and cycle mechanics. Awesome! So they fixed the crunchy, groany, growling noise my bike has been making lately and they alerted me to some very worn brake blocks. I have a Brompton P Line and love it for its practicality and the iconic design. It's a joy to…read moreride. When Brompton introduced the G Line, I was intrigued but the Alfine hub was a non-starter because the maintenance is not a simple affair. I have a Surly Ogre with a Rohloff hub and belt drive. It's just about maintenance free except for a fast and easy Rohloff oil change once a year. I had heard about Kinetics for a few years and was impressed with what Ben could do with Bromptons. He built me a G Line with a Rohloff hub and it's stunning. I just took a quick spin and I can confirm that Brompton + Rohloff + belt drive is a match made in bicycle heaven. This will be ideal companion to take on road trips and explore beyond the city limits. Ben is a one-man show and I don't know how he does it. I knew I couldn't trust this project to just anyone so I'm grateful for his expertise and project skills. He is definitely the Brompton whisperer.
