I came in earlier this week to get a tune-up on a nice road bike that had been not used for more than 2 years. We needed it for a memorial bike ride in two weeks. Rather than make me wait for scheduled service, they took a few minutes to look at it, put some air in the tires, and told me that it would be fine for what we had in mind. No need for full service. I was clueless and they could have taken advantage of me, but they didn't. They were very personal and looked out for my best interests. Really appreciate it. My husband and I have been stopping into bike world frequently for disc golf supplies and always talked to Steve about the local courses. When it was time for a bicycle I knew I had to start there. I had been eyeing the Electra Townie bike series for years and when I had enough money I knew that I was going to buy one. I was able to get the last one in the shop after a quick test ride around the building. Steve helped me with picking out a helmet while the service team made sure my bike was ready for the road. He helped me install my new bike rack on my car and the service team installed my new bell and basket. They did everything with a smile and cheerful demeanor, even when we were outside in the cold installing my bike rack. The team was very knowledgeable about the sport and the bikes. I will definitely go back to them if I ever need service, parts, or another bicycle. read more

They have a pretty decent selection but their price markups are ridiculous. The bike lock I almost bought here was listed at over $30 more than the price for the same lock on Amazon. The customer service was really great though. I bought a bike seat here, attached it to my bike and realized that it was just not what I wanted. They refunded me right away. read more

Two times in my life I have walked into this store in tears and both times I have left satisfied and confident. I don't know what it is about bikes and me, but I have little patience when the stupid thing doesn't work properly and I'm left at the end of a group of people who are riding into the sunset - and I'm suppose to be leading THEM. I made some simple mistakes putting my bike into my Prius. Long story short, I had screwed both my bike and my car up enough that I couldn't ride the bike and I had scratched my car. I was ready to hang up the bike and walk away. The manager? went out into my car, took out my bike and got it repaired. He then patiently went over and over and over again, how to release the brakes, remove the tire and put it into my car. The guy could have sold me an expensive rack system, Gad at this point, he could have sold me a new car, I was so frustrated, but instead, showed me my options, assured me that the bike would fit into my car without a rack and then went out to show me how it fit. I love this store and will go no where else in the future!! read more

Stellar Bike Shop! Highly Recommend a Stop&Shop! Great Selection of highly regarded Brands. Steve, the store manager, freely shared his time to address the issue we initially stopped in for, we did not buy our Trek from Bike World---yet one would never have guessed that fact from how exceedingly well we were treated. Your local "brick and mortar" shops have a very difficult time competing with a product and it's online Amazon price, the shops have many overheads from rent to the hiring of "bike" people who can share product-manufacturer information, along with related real world expertise, not to mention with important down-the-road follow-up. ALL is truly invaluable to satisfied customers-- one will find none of that with an Amazon sale. read more

Decent selection, but did not care for the customer service. I went in looking to buy several items I needed for two of my bikes. The lady working at the counter (owner?) chastised me when I sat on a recumbent bike that was sitting out on the sales floor and was generally not all the pleasant. I looked around for a couple more minutes then went to Skunk River cycles and spent about $200. I have no plans on going back here. read more

Let me begin by saying I have purchased three bikes at Bike World over the past 15 years or so. My past experiences with this business have been satisfactory, and I have purchased many other items besides bikes, but my most recent purchase, and my dissatisfaction with the bike, prompt me to write this negative review. I purchased a Trek hybrid bike a few months ago. Immediately, from the first day, I had problems with the front brake not centering properly and I had to spend quite a bit of time fiddling with it so the wheel would rotate freely and I could ride it. Bike World adjusted it three times. During the third visit, I asked if the brake could be faulty. The mechanic told me, dismissively, that Trek would laugh at them if they tried to warranty a brake. Then, immediately after this comment, he told me that they would change out the brake. I was also told that some material needed to be removed from the drop as the wheel was not seating properly. Since previous visits had left my new bike scratched by the mechanic, specifically the black paint on the brake in question, I asked if removing the material would scratch the bike. I was told no. Well, no new scratches, but their tool left burn marks on the white paint, yellowing it around the drop. Yes, I am picky, but this is a $1000 bike, and I would like the paint to last longer than 2 months. We left while the work was completed. When we returned, we were told that they had fixed the problem and that they did not need to change the brake. I was doubtful, but took the bike home. Of course, the problem was not fixed. And, this was not the only issue. When I took the bike in for its free new bike tune up at about 250 miles, I had more problems after the tune up than before. I noticed that it was not shifting smoothly, and on a ride last week, while climbing a hill, I put the bike into the granny, and not realizing that the chain had fallen off, kept spinning, thinking it would engage. It did not, and I fell over, not even having time to react and disengage the cleat. I won't go into details, but I was injured. We were out of town on a trip to ride, so I did ride the next day, and once again, climbing a hill, the chain fell off. I was ready this time, however, and did not have a mishap. When I returned to Ames, I took the bike to Skunk River. I have used their services many times and have found their mechanics to be very knowledgeable and professional, and they do not sell you services you do not need. They repaired the issues I had from the crash, which were several as I fell on my left side, and low and behold, found that the front brake had a broken piece inside, and thus was not centering. I had them replace it. I am angry and frustrated that Bike World could not find this issue. However, I will not even bother to take the faulty brake back to them, which I kept, as the cost and the hassle are not worth my time. If you are looking for good, down-to-earth professional mechanics, I recommend NOT using Bike World. Try Skunk River, they have never failed me. And, I question the quality of new Trek bikes (I have several dating back to 1984), but the current one I just purchased does not seem to have the same quality as the older ones. Bikeworld, Ames has been my ONLY bike shop for several years and I have purchased numerous items from them including no less than 10 bikes. The service is absolutely PHENOMENAL!! I drive an hour and a half and past several other bike shops to patronize them because they treat me like family and genuinely care. No disrespect to those other shops but when you find service this outstanding you earn a loyal customer for life. read more
