This place gave me the run around for two weeks regarding my appointment for a crown just for me to show up on the date of the actual appointment and they tell me, although my insurance covers the procedure, the doctor wouldn't make any money off it so they refused to work on me. So I came back here to get my X-Rays done (after the horrible dental assistant mentioned in previous review gave me total lock-jaw last time and FAILED), and I actually had a pleasurable experience. The staff was very apologetic for making me come back, which I appreciated. This time, another dental assistant, Lily, did my X-ray's, and everything went smooth as buttah! I barely felt like gagging, which is a rare occurrence (insert dirty joke here), and she was very personable and friendly. I love Dr. Afar. Even though he's busy as hell he always takes the time to explain a procedure and answer all my questions and then calls that night to make sure I'm doing ok. His office is always spic and span, top of the line, and his staff is always on the ball. They're not messing around in there. I had d a problem with my tooth few years back when Dr. Afar mad a recommendation of putting an implant in. I decided to get a second opinion and the dentist thought he could say the tooth. Unfortunately that did not workout too well as the tooth ended upsetting infected after 18 months. I was back to debating whether to do an implant, a bridge or simply live with the missing tooth. I decided to get another opinion and was given all kinds of recommendation which further scared me. Eventually on Tuesday, Dr.Afar didi the implant using one of the best from Germany. I am not usually nervous before any procedures but this one was new to me. I was extremely nervous. At the end of the day, I felt nothing and did not even take any pain medication. The implant is in and hopefully in few months, the crown will go in without a hitch. I am confident that I made the right choice finally as it was one painless and second very cost effective. He is a five star in my book!!! read more

I was very pleased with my visit to Dr. Afar's office. I have been going here for many years and have never had any problems. The reception is awesome. They're always in a good mood which makes you feel better, especially at the dentists office. For my most recent visit, I had to have a procedure done on my gums. The pre procedure was very relaxing. The assistants were making sure I was comfortable and satisfied. I didn't have the usual fear I get when I go to the doctor because once Dr. Afar came in, he explained every step of the way to me so that I would expect everything and nothing would be unknown and scary for me. I could tell he was making the effort to make me feel very safe and kept assuring me that if anything hurt I would just have to let him know and he would immediately adjust or add more numbing serum so that I would barely have to feel the pain. He always listened to my concerns and made sure I was content the whole way through. Dr. Afar is amazing! read more

This clinic is very pricey. I had 2 crowns done at $860 each. On top of it my molar needs a root canal and they charged me $815 with HMO/DMO insurance. I inquired outside and had it done at another dental office (Rootvision endo in Torrance) for $340. A much nicer clinic. They are definitely over-charging. read more

I've been going to Dr. Afar for over ten years - first for oral surgery (a soft tissue graft) when I was in my late teens / early 20s, and subsequently for follow up care - regular prophylaxis in particular. The graft from that surgery has held up really well and I've had no trouble with it. Dr. Afar is kind, frank and down to earth. I've had little cause to be worked on him since that first graft (thank goodness), but I've considered other oral/dental work on & off, and he's always taken the time to give me his input kindly and straightforwardly. Azi is the dental hygienist who does my teeth cleanings - she is *wonderful.* Very sweet and careful - I am sensitive and I trust her to make sure I'm as comfortable as can be, all things considered. I have been going to Dr. Afar for the past 5+ years and I don't know what I would do if I ever moved...probably drive up or fly in for my appointment. There's no one else that I'd trust. My implant has never been better with their help and advice. I go to them for cleanings too. Wouldn't trust anyone else. After my past horrible experiences, I finally don't fear going to the dentist! I am so thankful to have been under the care of Dr. Afar!! I had all four of my wisdom teeth extracted on the same day! Two were exposed and two were impacted but the procedure went very smooth and was virtually pain free! His office staff is always kind and genuine, i particularly like Elizandra. As soon as I walked in they were ready for me, no long waits. I was really nervous but Dr. Afar explained the procedure and made me feel at ease. I barely felt the anesthetic- Dr. Afar does this thing where he shakes your lip and you CANNOT feel the injection t all! My recovery was also smooth and pain free...i had very minimal swelling and everyone was shocked that I returned to work two days after my surgery! I'm really happy. read more

I have had many visits to Dr Afar's offices from EL Monte to North Hollywood. So far, the staffs are amazing and friendly. Dr. Afar is a good dentist because he let you to discuss your dental problems via his cellphone, which is rarely seen by the other dentists. I visited his offices for teeth veneers and crowns. He had done the upper part for me, and they looked fantastic. Now I am waiting for him to finish the lower part. I will update my treatment process as soon as I am done. I've now been going to Dr. Afar for more than five years. In addition to being just an all-round good guy to talk teeth to, he is a master of his craft. He has done one implant on me - and has managed to keep me from having others since with constant monitoring and repair. The implant was perfect - not easy since there was an infection in the root of the old tooth that had spread almost to my nasal passages. I had waited way too long to commit to the implant. I've learned my lesson. Mostly. I say that because I now need a new crown. Dr. Afar has patched the area so I can wait a few months. It's so strong that I'll have to try not to talk myself into thinking I can get away without a new crown. Also: Azi is my hygienist. I go to her at least three times a year. She and Dr. Afar then confer - which is like having a check-up multiple times a year. Pretty sure she's the best hygienist in the world. All the office staff are helpful and great. Like everyone else, I've been to many a dentist in my life - in LA, New York, and Texas. They were good too, but Dr. Afar is - without question - the best. read more

Most importantly he does good work and makes sure you are not in pain. His price is not cheap but is in line with other dental surgeons I checked out for implants. And you do get what you pay for. Dr. Afar extracted one of my wisdom teeth last week. Absolutely no pain or discomfort. He's highly experienced and his staff is awesome!

One of the things I dislike in life is going to the Dentist. Unfriendly, busy people. sitting in a chair, nervous about the procedure and then having the billing person come in and making you sign payment documents. This is why I rarely go, and end up in emergency situations. Well I got into another serious dental issue. A friend recommended Dr. Afar, I made an appointment. Upon arrival, I was greeted by very friendly people, who walked me through the paperwork. In fact,during the procedure, the receptionist (Tori) checked on me several times. I found this surprising. Dr. Afar was businesslike, assuring and friendly. He explained the problem, his recommendation and upon my approval, proceeded quickly and gently. I found the dental assistants to be caring, knowledgeable and friendly. They smiled and checked on me frequently (especially Gabby). She was confident and professional. Dr. Afar was very busy, but made me feel like I was the only one in the building, and so did his staff. Best Dental experience I have ever had. read more

Eh. I've seen Dr. Afar at his West Hollywood office which is smaller, but somehow more organized for that reason. My appointment was 11am. There was a wait for my paperwork to come through from the West Hollywood office, but I may as well have just re-filled the paperwork, as it took nearly an hour to call me in and snap two x-rays of my bottom molars (I went in for wisdom tooth pain). After yet another hour, Dr. Afar saw me for about 2 minutes at 1:00pm to refer me elsewhere for a CAT-scan. I understand that this is a busy office, but all of the 15 minutes that I was actually seen by the Doctor could have been completed closer to my 11am appointment rather than take up 2 hours of time that I had to take off work (and lose money over!) read more

Dr. Afar is a horrible dentist!! I should have written this review years ago, but wanted to maintain my anonymity, but now I feel like everyone should know the truth. I was a patient of Dr. Afar 7 years ago at the age of 17 for dental implants for 2 lateral incisors that I was congenitally missing. His skill was not to the capability to properly implant these teeth and after years of braces to make room for these implants Dr. Afar performed the procedure. He needed to perform bone grafts because the area of my teeth where the implant was to be placed didn't have enough bone. The bone grafts he did were not enough and to this day it appears as if there are two hollow grooves in my gum because there is not enough bone underneath. Aside from that MAJOR FLAW the metal implants are clearly visible under my gums because there is not enough bone in that area making my gums have a BLACK TINT! I was 17 at the time and for the past 7 years have had to prevent myself from fully smiling so that no one sees my gums, imagine the emotional upset that would cause anyone at that age! I went to him 1 year later with my complaints and he told me the "black color would fade". I went back 2 years later because nothing changed and I was still clearly upset and his brilliant solution for a 19 year old was to get BOTOX INJECTIONS ABOVE MY LIP to prevent me from fully smiling! SERIOUSLY?! How is that a rational solution to a dental procedure that was IMPROPERLY PERFORMED! I can't even begin to describe the amount of frustration and emotional upset I have because of this dentist. read more

Dr Afar has done fantastic work on my choppers. I had to first go to DrAfar for a front tooth dental implant. That was over 5 years ago and I have been going to him ever since. Over this time his office has replaced my front tooth, taken out 2 wisdom teeth, and have completed many cleanings. Everyone that works in the office is extremely professional and very helpful. They also always seem to work with my ever changing schedule and fit me in as quickly as possible after a last minute appointment change. read more

Dr Afar is an extremely smart, skilled, conscientious, and experienced dentist . Another dentist did my crowns all wrong and I was in extreme pain years ago. Nothing hurts more than a toothache. I was popping pain pills calling around for help to get the crowns fixed. I called his office and interviewed his secretary about his expertise because I was skeptical and rightly so because another dentist messed up. She said he's the best. She sounded genuine so I went to Dr. Afar to get the crowns redone. He fixed what the other dentist did and its been years I have no problems with both of my crowns and additional fillings he did. And the crowns were perfect bite and look so nice. He is not only a great dentist but I think other dentists should go to him to learn how to do dentistry the right way. No one should have to go through a crown on the same teeth twice. The front desk secretary is right! He is the best. My whole family goes to him now and I highly recommended him to all my friends and relatives. He's great with children as well. I wont go to anyone but Dr Afar for my dental issues. read more

I developed a serious peridontal condition in two teeth. Dr Afar worked diligently with me for over a year until and bone graft was necessary. He performed the difficult operation expertly and the outcome was a complete success. Besides being an expert professional Dr Afar has an incredible manner about him. I went to Dr. Afar after I woke up in intense pain from a long-neglected broken tooth. He immediately helped with the pain and took steps to give me a new crown. Unfortunately, the tooth was cracked and it didn't show up in the x-rays, so even though he tried his best to save the tooth, it eventually had to come out. I'm a big baby when it comes to the dentist, but Dr. Afar was so kind and caring that he really eased my anxiety. He checked in with me constantly during every procedure, making sure I wasn't in pain and giving me more novacaine when I started to feel anything. The extraction was super fast and pretty much painless. I had almost no pain afterwards either. I ended up with an implant and finally my mouth feels normal, thanks to Dr. Afar. He's not the cheapest dentist, but he was kind, caring, sensitive to my pain and anxiety, and he saw me several times on no notice. I would definitely go back to Dr. Afar, but I hope I never have to! read more
