We used to shop here regularly until we moved. We drove out here to get brown & serve rolls for Thanksgiving dinner. This has been the only store I've found them in for several years. We finished up our grocery shopping here. The store has been updated and is organized really well! I took off one star due to some of the produce, namely the oranges & lemons. I zest the peels when cooking and it was hard to find one orange with usable peels. I did buy many other produce items, which were in fine shape. The deli has some good deals going on. $6 off prosciutto right now. If you've never tried the bacon from the butcher counter, you are missing out! It's the best we've found! The store is going down hill fast. The quality is low, the service poor and the prices are high. I used to buy multiple orders at each visit. They have dropped most of the brands I like and substituted store brands or very pricey Boars Head. I asked for 2% Land O Lakes and they substituted low fat no salt BH at $10 per pound!! The new store brand fruits, vegetables, and snacks are poor quality and cost more. As for advertised meat and seafood specials. Over half the time they are not available. The clerk said they never came in. My wife and I are looking for a new store to go to. Sad because they are the most convenient location. read more

I like this location although I generally prefer either Stop & Shop or ShopRite (or even BJS Warehouse for bulk items) for groceries. Their in-store pizza is really good plus they have nice employees there. However their prices may be a little run-down on some items compared to other grocery stores near me but that is okay. read more

I visit this store with my Uncle when I come to the Storrs/Mansfield area in Connecticut. It's a huge store. It may be me but most items appear overpriced. I found some brands I use to be the same price as Manhattan. I also found decent sale items. I know one thing, there's plenty of options. Long straight isles loaded with brands. My family shops here regularly and has the rewards card. I'm happy to tag along and get some necessary items to eat during my visit. The store is clean, and well organized. The cashier was very professional and most important, friendly! It was a pleasure to shop at Big Y today. read more

Penny-pinchers will only want to shop here if it's significantly more convenient, as everything seemed a little more expensive than usual. (I used to mostly shop at Manchester Stop & Shop, but recently moved). Some of the sale prices were what I consider normal prices.. All that being said, the layout was nice, it was easy to move around because the store wasn't swamped, the staff was friendly, and everything seemed nice and clean. read more

Paula and the floral dept crew made several gorgeous center pieces for our party over the weekend. Fresh and beautiful. In addition, Paula blew up 60 balloons for us and bundled them in a way that did not get tangled and were easy to carry. Could not be more helpful and nice. I like the new changes and updating the big Y has done recently and this location however during the COVID-19 pandemic they have not been world class. Let me explain, the self-service registers are never cleaned in between customers. Also with the refrigerated/freezer doors nobody is constantly cleaning those as well so as a customer shows me the they are not doing the minimum to insure that customer stay safe. read more

Worst Big Y I ever went to, they don't even except debit or credit at all. They only accept cash and that's about it. There was even a long line in all of the cashier lines. There was no self checkout because Tolland is an old fashioned town. The associates are not helpful and are lazy. The manager doesn't care about anything at all. They even don't accept Apple Pay at all. I asked the employees and all of the other locations Apple Pay but this one. This is the only big y that don't even accept any popular payment systems. Better bring enough cash or your wasted at this Big Y. Lying it on your face. read more

My family calls Big Y "the food museum," because everything is perfectly arranged, displayed, and expensive. The checkout staff are always very friendly and helpful. But in a grocery store, I'm most concerned about the prices and the quality of the goods, and that is reflected in the 2-star rating. While the store is very clean and the food is arranged well, the produce and meats are generally not very good. It's mostly mass market produce, shiny but tasteless. There is a small amount of local produce, but the price markups on those items are severe and it's much better to go to a local farm stand or farmer's market. Last time I bought meat there, it was ground beef full of bone fragments. If you want to charge an arm and a leg, you have to do better with the quality of your goods. The whole "coin" incentive program is awful. If I wanted to gamble, I would go to a casino. What I want is consistent fair prices, not a game of bingo and trying to carry around a bunch of toy money. I come away from the store with the sense that I cannot get a good deal unless I play this absurd coin collecting game. It's just not at all appropriate for a business that caters to educated adults. read more

I shop here regularly since I live nearby, and always have a great experience. Last week I had the greatest experience that I've ever had at a grocery store! I left an unopened drink that I bought in the cart, and drove home - forgetting all about it. I got a call from them maybe 45 minutes later. They asked if I remember leaving my drink, and when I said yes, the man said he'd give me a store credit for it so that the next time I was in, I could just pick up a new bottle! I'm so grateful for this gesture and will be telling everyone how great this was! read more

The Asian man behind the deli is the most miserable person I've encountered in my life. He doesn't respond when you order and is extremely rude. He constantly has this look on his face of pure unhappiness and he obviously doesn't want to be there. Every single time we see him he looks miserable and it's too the point where my boyfriend and I laugh at how miserable he looks. Maybe he needs to be transferred to where he can't interact with people. 3 stars because we do like shopping here for the most part for the buy one get 2 free deals. read more

Disappointed that I am over charged on an item at least every third time I shop at Big Y. Never once in my favor - always in theirs. It happens so frequently that it is difficult to believe it is not intentional. Deceptive pricing also concerns me. For example, a sign will say $1.99 in big letters with no reference to a coupon. At the register, it is rung up at $5.99. If you happen to catch it, the cashier says you need a digital coupon to get it at $1.99. The sign didn't say that. Happens frequently. I think Big Y counts on the fact the most people don't look at their receipt or don't remember the advertised price so Big Y is rarely caught in the act. A pity. As a neighborhood store, and the only one in town, you'd like to be able to trust them. read more

Only shop here when you know what you need is on sale (and then compare with other places as sale prices aren't always a bargain). They have too many displays in the isles, it's like a maze, hard to navigate when busy. read more

The BIG WHY? Where to start? High prices, detached staff, deceiving signage, pay upfront for your discount "silver" cards or the insulting gamble at the register for your savings slot machines. The type of things they do and I've experienced at Big Why? Putting sale signs in front of non sale items. They placed the sale sign for the regular broccoli in front of the significantly more expensive 'organic' broccoli. When the manager is asked about this the manager, unbelievably, tries to convince me that that this is right until after a lengthy discussion he decides to put the right prices in front of the right items if not only to get me out of the store? The prices are generally very high. Sale prices are generally the normal prices you will find at that BIG W place, but BIG WHY prices, sale or not, usually never seem to match the low prices of the more competitive store chains with the "rite" in the name. Finally, the Silver and Gold coins and slot machines.... Why in the word does BIG WHY insult the customers by making them play pretend slot machines to win what amount to defacto coupons? WHY not just give them good prices in the first place? Stop the games! P.S. I've also been to the BIG WHY twice when the electronic system is down and after shopping and waiting in line you find out that they can't take your debit card, cash only, too bad, you wasted your time because who carries cash anymore? My advice... Stay away. I only go there for convenience and when I do I leave aggravated half of the time. read more

Like all Big Ys, this place has overpriced food to make up for its deeply discounted sales. However, compared to the Mansfield location, this place is a far friendlier place to shop based on customer service and staff members alone. read more

The Big Lie. Produce is expensive and usually old. Overall more expensive than other options nearby. Store is clean and convenient, but that's about it. BuyOneGetTwoFree is a scam; they jack up the price big time on the first item and the very next week when the "sale" is over the same item is 1/2 of what it was. Our memory is longer than that Big Y. But they have the volume of business being the only grocery store in the area. We need some more competition from other stores, but P&Z are easily influenced to keep others out. read more

Clean place. My only complaint. Is about the produce. The produce is over priced and usually on the older side, close to bad. Glad the farmers markets are back. I now have another complaint, almost every time I go there the bagger puts raw meat in the bag with all other groceries. Big y management told me that their policy is to make sure raw meat is bagged by itself. It is too bad that some employees don't follow the policy. read more

I never thought I'd say this but we are done shopping at Big Y. I've been a loyal Big Y shopper since the store in Manchester opened. Once the store in Tolland opened, we switched our business there. My husband has never been a fan because of the prices but I always liked the cleanliness of the store, the quality of the produce and, if you shopped them correctly, the deals. However, in the past few months we have noticed a huge decline in this store. My husband went to buy onion rolls for our burgers one night and when he opened the door, noticed there were quite a few flies in the bin. A few weeks later, we brought home a bunch of parsley that was so gritty, it was obvious it hadn't been cleaned. Then, to our disgust, while washing it out, we encountered a live cockroach. Today we threw away 2 containers of macaroni salad and potato salad that we did not want to risk eating after they recalled all the Mom's salad products. Highland Park is only a few miles down the road and, although expensive, the quality and peace of mind that shopping at a spotless, discriminating family store makes it worth the extra money. read more

I disagree with the reviewers complaining about high prices here. I shopped here for 2 years. If you look for deals they have them. It takes time and effort though to save the way we do. My boyfriend and I cannot be cheaper when it comes to groceries, we go to Aldi's first then to Big Y to save even more. Everything we buy is on sale, we eat cheap and we eat GREAT at home. Our fridge and kitchen cabinets want for nothing, we use coupons and their silver coins also. We haven't fallen for the silver savings club card scam, and we have never run out of actual silver coins. Hint: Every time you spin the wheel at any place other than the main registers you win a silver coin, the pharmacy, the fish counter, the prepared foods area too. We have 2 cards so we can play twice a day. We get great deals on meat (that's why we eat so good at home). I admit we can spend about 1.5 hours grocery shopping though per week. But the store is clean so we don't mind. The Ellington one is the same way as this one, very good. read more

So I've been shopping this big y for eleven years and had little problems here and there nothing to really warrant a complaint to anyone other than the store manager. So on my last (and final) visit I ordered two bags of fried chicken, because the two bags that were out there were four and a half hours old. So I order my food and the guy says it'll be twenty minutes. I'm fine with that because I really don't mind waiting for fresh food. So I walk around the store and went back the where I ordered the chicken from close to twenty minutes later. The same guy tells me it'll be another twenty minutes because the chicken was "rock solid frozen" hum ok, I'll go get a slice of pizza while I wait. The customer in front of me "caught the guy with his mouth full". Ok so there goes the pizza idea. So I decided to send an email (to big y) while I wait. Twenty minutes went by and I finally got my chicken. I went by the deli to get some coleslaw and nope no coleslaw. I leave the store and start to drive home and all I smell is burnt fried chicken. So I stopped to check it out and yes half the stuff was burnt. So I googled places to get fried chicken and pilot came up. I go to pilot (a truck stop) and ordered fried chicken. They also said twenty minutes. I said ok as long as it's not burnt. The person I ordered it from asked if I had a problem there before. I said no I just came from big y and .... she said oh no that's terrible. So my food comes and not only did they only charge me for half of it (thank you pilot) it was better than big y's anyway. So I sent another email and still no response. Finally two days later I sent another email saying good bye big y. Finally I heard back from someone who read my complaint and said wow talk about a perfect storm they will forward my complaint to the store manager and district manager. Still have not heard anything so yup it's for sure now good bye big y. There's someone else out there who will take my money I'm sure. read more

Big Y has a decent area for bottle and can returns. We generally use this store for items on sale in their flyer and not much else. We love the online flyer, and access to the next week's flyer a day before it is active. Before Christmas they have offered gift cards at a discount, which is a nice savings. We are glad they are here in Tolland when needed, as our other options (Costco, BJ's, and Highland Park) are a drive. read more
