If I could give no stars I would. I order a pizza. They tell me it will be ready in half an hour. The guy who takes the order even asks the other guy making pizza's how long it will take. So I go down to pick it up.....they said they didn't have an order....so im like no I called it in. A cheese pizza....then I said..... maybe I called the other big y by mistake but didn't have my phone to double check.....the guy who took the order sounded like the person on the phone i spoke to. So when I finally got home and checked the number.....it WAS the Ellington Big Y. So because they were behind they said there wasn't an order put in for the pizza. I'm so tired of this place. When you order a pizza you expect it to be ready when you get there....so I had to wait an additional 20 minutes while people waited to eat for this pizza I ordered. I finally put this in yelp because I have had other issues with customer service here as well....and it's basically very rude individuals who don't want to do their job. The last time I called their seafood department and they told me to HURRY UP AND GET THERE BEFORE THEY CLOSED. Otherwise I would be OUT OF LUCK to get my seafood cooked. Why do they bother to have departments cook or make food if people have to experience this GARBAGE? FROM NOW ON I WILL HAPPILY GO TO ANOTHER TOWN IF I NEED THEOR SERVICES! BUYER BEWARE! read more

For the past 4+ years this is my go to grocery store. I think I should count as a very loyal and valuable costumer; four years ago I was spending around $1500 per month here and in this recent half year, due to inflation, I spend around $2000 per month. Unfortunately, one employee does not treat me with respect (although several others are great). A thin older woman sometimes supervises the self-checkout. I've never found her to be nice, but that isn't the issue. The problem is that in the recent 6 months, she has multiple times asked me questions like she suspects me of shoplifting. It started when one time she saw me buying heirloom tomatoes (which have different colors like red and orangish yellow). She asked me if I put different produce in the same bag; I guess as if I was trying to purchase oranges at a tomatoe's price? I told her no. She said okay, but she clearly didn't believe it. FYI these tomatoes are one of the most expensive they carry, at around $4.5/lb. It wouldn't even make sense to mix them with other produce like oranges. One month later, she saw me buy the same heirloom tomatoes again. She came to me, asked me the same question again, and commented something like "I have never seen orange colored tomatoes." This time, I explained to her, that they are heirloom tomatoes and come with different colors. Recently, I bought two bags of green grapes (same brand) and weighed them together. She came over and asked me if I weighed both of them, since she only saw one itemized green grape. The implication being that I tried to sneak/steal one bag. This is beyond ridiculous. I can't take it any more. I am so done with this store and will never go back again. I do want to mention that the woman Alex who works at the fish stand has been very nice to me and very helpful. She is the reason I put up with the checkout woman for a few more months. However, I cannot take it any more. read more

I will start off with a positive remark since I am pretty upset and fed up with the quality of the produce department. My positive remark is that the store always appears clean and the staff are pleasant. With that being said, we are no longer interested in spending any money on produce at this store. In the last few weeks we have encountered moldy strawberries and raspberries, astronomical prices and have, for the second time in a week, brought home a full watermelon that has a rancid smell upon cutting to serve. We literally bought the watermelon today, so we would expect fresh product. We did not attempt to return. Working long hours is not conducive to returning back to the store that should have offered freshness to begin with. I don't even know how much we spend a month on produce (our favorite thing to eat) but I can tell you that Big Y of Ellington will no longer be getting our produce business. It's hard enough to spend crazy amounts of money on the items that sustain good health, add the fact that we have to throw it out on the same day as purchasing and you have a very unhappy customer. Thankfully, we have plenty of farm stands near by and we will now be giving them our business for produce. read more

As a grocery store, I don't really feel like their prices are competitive. Big Y to me is the most overpriced grocery store around. I spend at least 2x more when I go there vs another local grocery store. I do think they have great, often locally sourced produce and some great bakery and deli items .... meats usually pretty good too ... but more competitive pricing would be a great idea. However - the take out food area is awesome! So economically friendly and delicious. Our favorites are their party pizzas and 30" subs for parties - chicken bacon ranch pizza is amazing! I recently got their chicken tenders sub and it was outstanding. So much bang for your buck there ... I wish the grocery store itself would follow suit. Happy that they now have self check out at this location .... but wish you could type in your phone number when you don't have your big y card like most other stores with this feature allow. read more

The store is very clean. The staff is super helpful. They always have baggers available. The lot is always clear of random carts.

Friendly environment and the best grocery store to go to. I am originally from south Windsor but I still go to this specific location. Big y has the BEST deals and will always get you to save some money in your wallet. Recently went to go buy porterhouses and when i saw the prices I was shocked!! 4 porterhouses for just $20! You will never find a great deal anywhere else. The staff is also extremely nice and they always bag my groceries neat and nice. read more

I am new here from California, VIA Texas. I asked their wonderful manager if he would try and get me three things: peppermint bark Oreos, Jamaican Jerk sauce and Mole sauce. He got me jerk spices and the Oreos. Didnt have a source for the Mole sauce. Way to make a girl happy! Thanks! read more

Great store it is very well laid out and very fresh and clean. I've been here a few times and the staff is always friendly and helpful. They also offer these giant sheet pizzas made with fresh ingredients and served piping hot. This is great for bringing to the office for meetings or projects. I think you need to order them a few hours ahead so check before just dropping in and expecting to get one. read more

This is the nicest Big Y I've ever been in. Seriously. We shopped around 3PM on a Friday afternoon and it was such a pleasant experience. Great parking, and a store that wasn't crowded. I'll definitely come here again when we're in town visiting. read more

I have five pretty nice groceries stores, a Target and a Walmart Super Center, all equidistant from me, all with fairly similar selections for items I require, so I really don't have to shop around for anything but price. Needless to say, Big Y doesn't beat anyone in price and offers similar customer service, so I only stop in when I'm running errands in the Ellington area. We stopped in today, a little bit after noontime so we could do some urgent shopping and recycle our containers and plastic bags. When we got into the three machine bottle area, there were two guys who had enough returns for a frat party, and the third machine was not working. I used the buzzer/speaker intercom on the wall to summon the service desk and, when a young girl answered, I told her the third machine was broken/not working and asked her if she could please send someone to fix it. I did hear her call for help in the bottle room, but no over ever came. My fiance then suggested we split up to save time (both football and UConn basketball on TV today, ahem!)- one of us do the shopping, one do the recycling. I volunteered to do the recycling, since I had a long coat on. I called the service desk again, a while later, as it was 33 degrees in the room (literally- by my coat's LL Bean thermometer), and the two guys were going to be at it for a while still. The same girl answered and wearily said "I already called someone." I replied with "And can you please turn the heat on in here? It's absolutely freezing and every time somebody walks by the double door, they open." She said "Uh-huh" and hung up, cutting off my thank you midsentence. After a while, the two guys finally finished up. I asked them to please ask for help and heat (about which they also complained) when they cashed in their receipt at the service desk, to which they heartily agreed. I started my large recycling job, when a guy with a small bag walked in. I told him to take cuts, as he was elderly and it was freezing in there. He was quick, and said "Thanks VERY much, it IS cold in here!" I implored him to beseech the service desk for some heat and a repairman. He said he certainly would! I continued my recycling, but let yet another very small job person cut in. When I started up my recycling again, my fiancé came in and asked why it was so cold in there. I asked him, too, to call for help and heat, as my hands were so cold they'd gotten stiff, so he buzzed the service desk. The same young lady at the service desk answered, again repeating that she DID call someone, but that she'd do it again. I called out, telling her there was no heat in the room, that it was freezing. She snarkily said back quite loudly: "There IS no HEAT in there!" and hung up. Really??! After we packed it up, got into our car and then drove away, we saw a bespectacled young man walking outdoors to the bottle room's separate entrance, with no jacket on at all (Big Y should provide one, as the bottle room has a totally separate entrance you're required to walk outside to, and you get dirty and sticky changing the recycling bins). In the bottle room, there's a thermostat centrally mounted about 9' up on the wall, and, I'm no HVAC specialist, but there's an open grate in the ceiling that looks pretty much like a heat grate. Stores are required by law to provide a recycling area for the bottles and cans they sell, but do people have to recycle them in outside temp air? That's absolutely ridiculous in the wintertime, and probably why, every time I come there to recycle, most people have weeks worth of recycling- they don't want to do it that often in an unheated room. Big Y should fix the entrance doors to the bottle return room so that, in the wintertime, they're "press for entrance" style doors- like handicapped entrances, and control the heat with a motion sensor operated thermostat, that only calls for heat when the room's occupied (like the blowers used at their entry points in the chilly fall, when their entry doors are wide open). It didn't take a rocket scientist to know that's how they could save big bucks on the heating bill for that room. So, Big Y: please fix your bottle machines more promptly, change the bottle room's door openers, and HEAT THE BOTTLE RETURN ROOM!!! We customers deserve better than an unheated room to help you fulfill your recycling requirement. You should be HELPING us recycle, not making the experience hellishly cold. Went couple times to manchester big y is not the same. give 3 stars. now find out elligton had one. some much different more later out. easy find stuff. cleaner and organized. cool was the manager help you pack food. you don't see this every day. and he was friendly. price not bed. every week some stuff on great deals.save couple box. even help you have silver conins. lot of different products. even from different countries. the deli people and cashiers friendly and helpful. read more

I used to use the Manchester store until I moved for a short time to MA where I used the Wilbraham store. It was like night and day. The Wilbraham store was much nicer, cleaner, better organized and employees much more friendly and courteous. Have since moved back to CT and am now using the Ellington store and find it just as nice as the Wilbraham store and immensely better than the Manchester store. I usually fill out the customer survey once a month and have had the manager reply via phone the next day to any (minor) problems. Have never had that experience with any other store. I'm impressed. The pharmacy at this location is open on Sundays! The people are generally very friendly, from the deli people to the meat counter to the cashiers. We use the silver coins, we never bought the silver savings card and yet we still haven't run out of actual coins after 2 years. Maybe because they are mainly used to try to sell fattening items like in the bakery. You can get great deals if you use them when the time is right, you can save $5 at a time if you use a silver coin wisely on something that you really need, like meat, or must buy, like a flower arrangement for somebody. The buy 2 get 1 free specials are awesome and they do not run out of merchandise when it's on sale (my boyfriend's pet peeve). Produce is generally good, meat selection is ok, and the store is clean. Only bad thing: Returning bottles turns into anxiety, there is always a machine not working, once the store was open already early in the morning and the manager did not unlock the door to the bottle return. I had to go inside and walk a long way to get somebody to unlock the outside door. It was wintertime and I had to stand outside and wait for her to unlock the door. No "I'm sorry". All I got was "I was busy and forgot", and some story that meant nothing to me (the customer). read more
