Drinks and snacks after spending the day exploring Hartford, I stopped in to this Price Chopper. It is a full service supermarket with produce, deli, and butcher. I thought that the prices were a bit high compared to what I'm used to back at home. Plus of course, there's the CT bottle/can deposit that adds to the cost. The store is clean and well lit. The parking lot had no litter and the cart corrals were clear. It is a positive shopping experience. The young lady monitoring the self-checkout was attentive and had a nice smile. Went to the butcher dept at the windsor store and asked for a 2 1/2 to 3 lb. roast they would not cut it for me, they told me I would have to buy the whole thing. I told them it was for two people only and don't need the whole thing. Now why have a butcher dept if you won't give the customer what they want, You can buy 2 pieces of bacon or one hamburger or 2 pieces of chicken then why can't you buy a 3lb ROAST????? The manager told me they won't do that because they won't be able to sell the other half of the roast (aprox.3 lbs). Now while I was there a lot of senior citizens were shopping and thats all they need sometimes is a smaller amount, But this price chopper doesn't care about the seniors in this town or they would like other stores and package smaller amts. Excellent spot. It was next to my hotel, as such, I came here to get items for dinner. They have prepared meals on affordable prices. Ended up getting protein shakes and Coke Zero after I lost appetite. They are open late until 11PM EST. Which is excellent. read more

If Jennifer (manager) is not in the seafood department, then supposedly they never have whiting. It's in the freezer, but the workers, (Dennis & Co.) apparently don't take the time to go in the freezer and pull it out despite it being the seafood department's best seller. Kind of ridiculous that when 1 person is not there, they suddenly run out of material. Used to be a place to go a cheap lunch, but the inconsistency ruins it. 5 stars for Jennifer. 1 star for the rest of them. So average 3 star joint. read more

Looks like a pretty decent grocery store, I'm from out of town so this is what was near. Seem clean, organized. The cashiers were super friendly. I only found one cart sitting in the middle of the parking lot, the rest made it to the corral. (Abandoned carts in the parking lot is one of my pet peeves). In 2001, I attended an industry convention in St. Louis. There were 300+ people there. We had a very nice catered reception party off site at one of the museums. I distinctly remember a large sushi display that greeted the guests when they walked in. I remember hearing the following remarks: "Yuck what is that?". "Is that sushi? Oh gross!". "Ewww isn't that raw fish? That's disgusting!". Fast forward to the present, a scant 13 years later, and look at how fast our culture has changed. You simply cannot walk into any supermarket in Connecticut and not be greeted by a sushi display. More often than not, there is a Sushi Master on site crafting the delicacies in front of you. Price Chopper in Windsor has a Sushi Department manned by a real life Sushi Chef. He whips up these tasty morsels of fish and rice and veggies in front of you. I've had lunch here dozens of times and have enjoyed the variety and quality every time. They have quite a nice selection of sushi and dumplings. I had lunch here today and paid $8.99 for 6 pieces of shrimp tempura and 8 pieces of spicy shrimp. It was fresh, delicious, and the spicy shrimp was pleasingly spicy. One open checkout line and it was for 15 items or less. Forced to use self checkout for a cart full of food. The scanner on the self checkout was complete trash and took an average of 4 swipes per item to work. Longer to checkout than to shop. Most frustrating shopping experience in recent memory. Rather spend more $$ than be annoyed. Will not be returning any time soon. read more

Let me start my review by saying I am reviewing the food court area, not the groceries. I come here for lunch sometimes. They have really good soups, really good bagels, the fried chicken is good, and the pizza is OK. The soups, bagels, and the pizza come in many different varieties. The bagels you can almost always get the kind you want, but the soups and pizza are rotating. I love their Italian Wedding soup, but they may not have it the day I go in (but will have about 7-8 other kinds). You can almost always kind a cheese or pepperoni pizza, but they also have a BBQ chicken and a buffalo chicken pizza too you might find some days. And you can get 2 slices and a drink for around 5.50. So it's a great place for a quick, filling, cheap lunch. read more

Be careful when they have a sale and say "while supplies last" because there's a good chance you'll go there and they will be out of the sale product. They won't even issue a rain check. It's a good way to get you to shop there because they figure you won't go home empty handy even if they don't have what you really came for. Thought grocery stores and stores in general used to get into trouble for this nonsense. Very sketchy. Other fun notes.... watch the cashiers carefully... if they don't know what a produce item is they just put in something random. Instead of getting those sale tomatoes for 99 cents a pound, they may punch in the code for another type of tomato that's 3.49 per pound. I've caught them many times, sometimes even putting in a totally random item like an eggplant when you bought butternut squash. And if you wait for them to load your carriage, you'll be there all day. It's like they expect you to do that yourself. Very lazy cashiers. Only redeeming thing about this store is that it's open after the good stores like Big Y and Geisslers are closed. read more

This Price Chopper seems pretty legit. I'm working within walking distance so I decided to check it out. They have everything you'd want in a supermarket (large produce section, aisles and aisles of frozen foods, a large array of hygiene and other personal care items in case you want this to be your only stop). What I was most impressed by was the hot/prepared food section. There's a salad bar, pizza, sandwiches and even sushi! The sushi wasn't some ultra pre packaged never fresh kind, the sushi chef is there before you're eyes preparing away! There's a large eat in dining area too which I thought was great. Here is my experience at a local town Price Copper Supermarket. Let me say first that cashiers and or employees working on the floor should not be allowed to carry or have personal Smartphones in their possession. Have you ever walked down an isle in a Target or supermarket and need to ask a question and were afraid to interrupt an employee of that store during their conversation (heaven forbid that they were not speaking in English)? We need Smart People to help us not Smartphones. My receipt got messed up but here is what happened. I am big on reduced items with that $2.00, $3.00, and etc. coupon that the cashiers have a problem with, especially when they have long finger nails or don't have the patience to properly remove them. First the cashier rang up my bill missing $4.00 out of the $10.00 worth of reduced meat products. I pointed this out and the final $4.00 should up as if I gave her as reduced meats and not held coupons . Not only I was in the 15 items or less items aisle so that you could imagine the women next in line and me gave us stares as "what is going on" , And to put it politely. So now I have credit for my $10.00, but not as the coupons should have been reported. So now my Advantage Savings (hint) amounted to $2.13 and coupon saving $10.00. So in the end my bill came to $18.07 (I always pay cash). I gave the cashier $20.02. She rang me up as giving her as $18.07. I told her that I gave her $20.02. She took out her smartphone and started doing calculations for more time that anyone in the 15 items or less should endure. So now this Smartphone (I don't even have a cellphone) comes up with her calculations (she should have asked a supervisor or manager to void and do over this transaction. In my 77 year old mind I calculated that she owed me $1.95. After a long wait she plopped down (not in my hand) $12.00 back in change. After going home and trying to decipher what happened and I went back to the store asked for a store manager tried the best that I could what happened ( I am sure that he or other employees present (never asked to sign anything as one would have to do when returning an item or complaining about a charge). In the long run I gave the store manager $10.05 in cash that I should have never gotten back in change. I am not sure that they $10.05 ever got credited back to the store from me. I am just one. How many times that cost consumers cashiers mistakes. As a former store owner back in the 70's and my wife as cashier back in the 60's you always counted out the dollar bills to a customer and managing one in Florida in the late 80's and then handed them the change. Now it has evolved into plopping in your hand your change in dollars (chances that you never count them) and your coin change in your hand. You didn't back then in the 50's or now have a clerk stuff your change into your hand in dollar bills and balance coins on them and I predict that 99% of you will take it and walk away. read more

Out of all the sushi places in and around the area, would you believe that PriceChopper has the greatest sushi?! Nope. Didnt think so. But I've become somewhat of a sushi snob and I am here to tell you it's pretty excellent. Always freshly made. Always. You can't go wrong with anything here. I recommend the Tuna Roll and the Shumai. What I think is great are the prices. For $6, I get 6-8 pieces of sushi. The Shumai will run you $4.50 for 6 pieces. The chefs are always SO nice and helpful. They will gladly make recommendations and answer any questions. For a craving during your workday, this is your place. It's solid. read more

I do a lot of my shopping here since it is right around the corner. The breads are excellent - made fresh on site. People are very nice. Produce for the most part very fresh. Meats have been good and butchers are very helpful and nice. I am not sure about the new self checkout. Seems like there are less cashiers to encourage you to use the self check out. I don't mind that when I don't have a full weeks groceries. However that is where I have ended up the last 2 times to end my long wait in a cashier line. Self checkout not conducive in its set up to a large shopping trip. There is little room to put another cart to move bags into. I have noticed lately the cashiers don't even attempt to bag. I have been next in line while a customer who had bagged their own items is desperately trying to place their bags in the cart while they cashier begins ringing up the next customer. read more

Love the late night hours, don't love the late night staff. High school kids running around actin a fool and/or flirting with each other and talking about parties at the registers. It is usually too much to ask for to get a "hello" or "how are you doing". On occasion you will get a have a nice night from the bagger but almost never anything pleasant from the cashiers. When you shop for groceries late at night its ok to be all business but act like a decent human being. read more

I am a weekly business traveler to CT, living in a nearby hotel. I had forgotten shaving gel. I went to their travel section, took the travel size Edge shaving gel without even looking at the price, as I often buy these at home and they are cheap. At the checkout it rung up at over $15. I think $15.31 or more. I walked out and this morning I went and got the exact same Edge travel size shaving gel at Target for $1.49. I can understand that Price Chopper might be a little more expensive that that price is extortion. I will not shop there again. read more

It's your average grocery store with average prices, but I gave it the extra star because there is a Japanese sushi chef there that does a pretty good job (and a great job for a grocery store). I have been coming here on and off for a few years now. He used to give us hot tea for free for lunch, and their sushi is pretty fresh. I normally don't shop here but decided to try them out today since I was out this way. I thought their prices were a bit high but not overly extravagant. The only real issue I had was when checking out. I made the mistake of asking for a pack of cigarettes. The cashier's attitude abruptly changed from bright and cheery to disgusted. I understand some people don't agree with smoking and that's fine by me, but this cashier had no right to so blatantly judge me and then give me less than her best. It's the nearest supermarket from my home, so have frequented it numerous times. The quality of the products is really good and sometimes you might get a great deal or two here. The staff is extremely helpful. Every aisle is neatly arranged and clearly labelled. Shopping here is a breeze. The prices tend to be on slightly higher side, but have never had any complaint on the quality of the things that I have purchased here. Have been in contact with their customer service a couple of times. Both times the issue was due to my negligence, but they were really co operative and happy to help. Only thing is you might have to wait a bit to contact their customer service person, can not be always found in their desk. read more

Price Choppers usually does a good job. However, their polish donuts, or Pączki, are not one of their good things. They are suppose to have a lot of filling, these don't. They are all dough.
