Rather, you're more likely to go there when you're already at the Market and you need a few high end items for guests or niche home cooking. Example, if you're cooking a Spanish-themed meal and you want better sherry vinegar and Spanish olive oil than you can buy at your near home grocery, you can get that at the Parkville Market Grocer. That can be very convenient.

But if you walk to the far left side of the market in search of the restrooms, you'll see a sign and a downward staircase that will bring you here. It carries food items from Spain, Italy, and the Mediterranean area. Lots of canned fish, pasta, oils, vinegars, crackers, sauces, olives , meats and cheese and the like. It reminded me a lot of the little grocery store inside the old Costa Del Sol restaurant. There were some freebie cheese and cracker samples, and a sweet and friendly young lady there to greet us. We were the only one in the store, and I sure hope the market adds The Grocer to their website and list of vendors to encourage more customers to visit. Surprising to us, was that the pricing was very reasonable!! We picked up a jar of fig jam for $6.49 and a big 25 ounce jar of Fra Diavlo sauce for $4.99. I am certain that every future trip we make to the Parkville Market will end with a walk down that staircase into the Grocer. Hope to see you there !

When the corn reaches full size, they have delicious corn. In fact, many years we participate in K&B's weekly CSA because we love their produce so much. In addition to great produce, K&B has relationships with terrific CT vendors, including two of my favorites- Granny's Pie Factory and Seed Bagel Shop. They frequently have several pies from Granny's and bags of 6 bagels from Seed. They have CT milk in really cool glass containers. They have CT cheese. They have gourmet CT ice cream sandwiches. K&B has terrific products, service is great and I love driving there and picking out stuff.

On Main Street in Middletown you'll come across a tiny Chocolatier called Tschudin Chocolates. This…read moreis owned by chocolate chef Roberto Tschudin. Rob is a man of MANY skills and talents, he's also very personable and welcoming. His chocolates look like little art figurines, from the colors to the interesting designs. Since my dad loves any gift that comes in a form of chocolate, I thought it was a perfect reason to get him something from Tschudin. I told Rob to select me six of his best sellers of dark chocolate. He did, I can't say what I got, but the one I personally had was the peanut butter. The peanut butter was creamy, and whipped, the slight bitterness of the dark chocolate was the perfect pairing, so tasty! My dad loved his gift, I think if he knew these were a bit pricier he wouldn't have had them in one sitting. If you're looking to treat your self to some chocolate or give some as a gift, please stop by Tschudin.

High quality chocolatier, doing his own thing…read more Came here initially on a whim, seeing the owner walking outside with the big white hat and chef whites. We were greeted with a mostly empty display with lots of stuff everywhere. We did manage to get a small group of treats at a fairly high price point, but the attention to detail and quality of the chocolates produced were at levels typically not seen in Connecticut or even around the US. Ever since that first meeting, we try to make the trek here to get a few delectable treats to savor once in a while. The owner is very relaxed and uses his place as a ramshackle display of personality and skill. It's not prim and polished, but there's a few pieces usually on display, a subtle sweet smell in the air, and many interesting flavors and fillings of truffles dotting the display cases. Like a master tailor, this place is known by those who know. They look past the grit and enjoy the true gem. It's really good chocolate, pricy but worth it, and worth a trek.

My Sunday Staple is the Coventry farmer's market…read more It's always such a nice way to spend the morning/early afternoon on a Sunday. There are so many great vendors and it's awesome that there's the staples there each week + rotating vendors. It's great that some stands will give you samples. There is such a great variety to choose from and the local vendors are all sooo incredibly nice. My favorites are the chip family and the couple who sells pound cake cupcakes. Their personalities and products shine! Some of my other favorite vendors: -Charlene Li's pottery: her work is gorgeous. We own one of her spoon rests and olive oil dispensers, in addition to gifting some too. -I can't remember the farm name but it's along the left hand side when you walk into the field. They are always set up there with 2-3 long tables of their produce. -Cosmic donuts: who doesn't love a hot, fresh apple cider donut? I also like their coffee. It's simple, it's cheap, it's delicious! -Verdilune jewelry: beautiful, unique jewelry. I have a few pieces of my own, my friends have bought from there, and I've gifted a few as well. Be prepared with cash since some vendors don't have card readers and for the ones who do the WiFi can be very laggy and cause issues. If you end up liking the market I highly recommend becoming a "friend of the market" where you pay to get a special market bag and that gets you discounts at every vendor for the entire season!

"I've been eating chocolate Looking up and out on the land…read moreIt's just one stop short of heaven Oh, I must be in Switzerland" (Bellamy Brothers) When we walked by the newish Läderach store specializing in Swiss Chocolates, I presumed it was named for a Swiss word. But I was wrong because Läderach is the family name of the company's owners! Be prepared when you walk past their front window and into the store, because you will see an eye-popping display of chocolate slabs speckled with all sorts of goodies. Those inviting slabs are "FrischSchoggi" and there are twenty types available. So, what in the name of the Swiss Alps is a FrischSchoggi? Well, it's a Swiss German term meaning "fresh chocolate," and refers to large, hand-broken slabs of artisan chocolate. The slabs are poured onto cooling tables and snapped by hand into irregular shards rather than neat, molded bars. To make them even better, they feature things like roasted nuts, freeze-dried fruits, and caramel. When we walked into the store, we were greeted by Anthony who had a fantastic personality and a tray of FrischSchoggi samples. Now, we all know that all chocolates are not made equal and some are better than others while some are a LOT better than others. The Läderach chocolates we sampled were so amazing we knew we'd be leaving the premises with a bag of something. The FrischSchoggi samples were so thick that even a small sized sample was a lot of chocolate to savor. They sell over 100 varieties of chocolate. Besides those incredible FrischSchoggi slabs, they offer pralines, truffles, and specialty boxes. We picked up a specialty box of 24 mini FrischSchoggi squares -three each of eight varieties with assorted mix-ins like hazelnuts, almonds, blackberry and raspberry, salted caramel, orange, pistachios, and milk. I had my first mini FrischSchoggi last night- a heavenly square of chocolate with Hazelnuts. Seriously, it was one of the best chocolates this chocolate loving Yelper has ever had. Price? Well, as you might suspect this is a pricey store. But trust me on this, their quality sure supported their price.
