We were at another bar nearby (Lava Lava) and were planning on staying there to watch our Seahawks play. However, the service stunk, so we drank our beer and looked up other sports bars that might be near. We came across Big Wave Dave's. Let me just say right off that this place ROCKS. Not only is the food super good, it's crazy reasonably priced. It is a dive bar at its finest. We watched the football game, drank beer and ate the best burger I've had in... I don't even know... maybe ever! By the end of the night, we were hanging with the locals, who thought it was funny that we were there because it's such a locals hangout. We met Dave, the owner and heard his story of how the place was established and one of the guys at the bar picked up our tab. Really? Yes, really. I love dive bars. This place delivered. I didn't eat there but was told by a few locals that their food is good and reasonably priced. No beer on draft, just bottles. The next day I was on the other side of the island and this place randomly came up while talking to the waitress. She said it's well known among the locals and one of the biggest dive bars in Kauai! Just don't let the local drunk sell you a $70k condo. It's a scam. read more

We had such an amazing experience on the island and we are avid "dive bar" goers on the mainland and for us to find Big Wave Daves made us not only feel at home, the patrons and employees did too! When me and my husband walked in here It reminded us of a bar that we always go to in cali. We walked in and was welcomed by the bartender Barbra. Shes so Sweet and made us felt right at home. We have gone to other bars around the area but no one has better service and happy hour like here. They give out complimentary appitizer that taste great and people here at this bar are nice and friendly. The loaded fires here are a must try! Barbra recomended a few restuarants and help us know the area a little better. She makes the best mai thai so be sure to try it. We couldn't find NaNa's so we came here. Patty melt, although not on rye, was delicious. I'm not a Coleslaw person but I tried it, hey Mikey, I liked it! So did my husband. It didn't have horseradish in it. Husband had hamburger and fries he said the bun was good as was the hamburger. The fries were crisp and not greasy. The bill was $20. Cheap for Hawaii. Such a fun place for a random stop - for drinks and a football game. It has a beach-y and laid-back vibe that you'd expect in a chill town like Kapaa. We had a few drinks, a lot of fun, and no weird looks or rudeness because we were clearly visiting from the mainland. Good happy hour specials, friendly staff, fun crowd. They have music on weekends, and we regret missing it. We drove by and didn't know what kind of place it was, but after visiting, we we wish we would have dropped in. They have a food menu but we didn't try it. Some people had what looked like were tasty wings. They did give us a free sample of smoked meats that were delicious. And they have several plasma TVs in the bar that make for fun sports-watching. read more

Had been wanting to check this place out for years but I had a new baby. Finally went with high hopes for a decent dive bar. So disappointed in this place. Bartender/waitress was rude and impatient and her service was slow. She talked more at the bar than ran her tables. The turkey sandwich had maybe 3 paper thin pieces of meat. Friends and I were visiting Kauai and staying just down the road, found Big Dave's on our first day for lunch. Food was good and drinks were affordable which was nice to see after being on Waikiki for a few days. We came back for Happy Hour and really enjoyed relaxing with cheap beer and locals. Well, I see the reviews, and they seem very generous to me. This place is okay. We went on a rainy Saturday night, and there were five other people in the bar. Just got home from Kauai. Thought we would try this local favorite burger joint while visiting. Dinner was sadly nothing more than adequate. But the service was horrible. Local is right. If you're not a regular, forget about it. The bartender was the waiter as well as the bartender . He was sitting at a table with a group of friends. When he finally did come over to check on us, my husband asked for a glass of water. Never brought it out. My husband ended up having to go to the bar and retrieve it. I came here based on the 4 star review and the description of the food. After telling us to sit anywhere, thank goodness the waitress/bar keep was very slow to get back to us because it gave my group and me time to look around. The place was filthy. A layer of black dirt was caked on the windows and the carpet and rugs looked like they hadn't been cleaned in years. There was also a permeating smell of rancid fried oil. I can do funky, but this was well beyond that. The scary state of the place dawned on my party and me at about the same time and when I suggested going to the Mexican place down the street (which was quite good) we all jumped up and got out of there quickly. I can't comment on the food, because we didn't try it, but I question the validity of any of these positive reviews based on Big Wave Dave's lack of cleanliness. Food was delicious. We had loaded fries that had very few stray fries with no toppings and we split a BLT. Hit the spot on a hot day. Not much ambiance, but employees were super nice and welcoming. Restaurant had an off putting odor and the ambiance wasn't that great... complete isolation from the street so no view or air movement. read more

We read the reviews and I wanted to see how bad a place can be. We were disappointed. We ordered 12 chicken wings and two bottles of beer. We eat allot of wings everywhere we go and we have to say they were in the top three favourite wings we have ever had, and the bottles of beer were served with ice on them still. We were staying in Kapaa and kept walking by Big Wave Dave's. We had read mixed reviews and decided to find out for ourselves. The bartender/Waitress did a great job taking care of everyone in there. Fun place. Bottom line is the Garlic chicken appetizer was incredible. So delicious and fresh. I would love to figure out how to make it.
