We were passing through town and saw the high Yelp ratings so we stopped here. Lord have mercy, I could live at this place. It's the BEST SOUTHERN COOKING I've ever had! The menu changes every day, you get a meat and two sides of your choice and they also add white rice with gravy and you can choose either a big yeast roll or hot water cornbread. Well, I had fried chicken, mustard greens, green beans, the rice with gravy and hot watered cornbread. I could have died and gone to heaven! The fried chicken was not greasy and it was flavored through, the mustard greens were out of this world and the green beans were deliciously tender, the rice with gravy was good too. The hot water cornbread was so good, I ordered 4 to go. It's been over a week since we ate here, and I still dream about it. My husband had the same meal I did, but he ordered the yeast roll. It was the size of 2-3 biscuits. He said it was so good and fluffy. He gave me a bite and he was right. He had the sweet tea and he said it was perfection. Next time I'm going to be prepared and bring either jam or honey and order a biscuit (and hot water cornbread) and spread it on both and have that for dessert. And speaking of dessert, my husband ordered a lemon cake. Of course I tried it too and I was transported to my grandma's kitchen. Both came with 3 sides and hot water cornbread. Everything was hot and seasoned to perfection. The place on the outside is hard to recognize because of a lack of signage but once inside the staff was so friendly and helpful. You won't regret putting this on your travel itinerary. I knew I found the place because cars were wrapped around the building (a sign great things are to come and the food must be very good). Well, I wasn't disappointed and the food and service lived up to their reputation. The greens (vegetables) were awesome and seasoned well. Foodwise, I loved the fried chicken, but thought the red beans and black eyed peas could use more seasoning. The yams were also way too sweet. I wasn't a fan of the potatoes with gravy either, and thought my dad's homemade potatoes and giblet gravy were better. However, my dad actually enjoyed all of the sides, so I guess it's up to taste. I could probably finish the whole rack of ribs in one sitting, followed by instantaneous food coma. The sides, although good, weren't nearly as spectacular as the main entrees, but more like side characters or extras in a movie- the fillers that help complete the whole story line. Hot water cornbread was ok but that's only because I've been spoiled by authentic soul food back home in Houston. For dessert, I had the spice cake, which was really moist, tender, sweet and had the right amount of spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, ginger, all spice). It was a great ending to a great lunch! You get SOOO MUCH food. Literally everything on the menu is to die for. The fried chicken is the best that you can have and if you ask they will dip it in gravy. Personally the mac n cheese is the best I've tasted and if you don't try the pound cake you are making a mistake. I could eat here everyday. The staff are so friendly. Oh my gosh! We had the best lunch here! I had the meatloaf, which was so good, the mashed potatoes with homemade gravy was off the charts delicious! The black eyed peas and cabbage were perfectly seasoned. My husband had the fried chicken which he said was moist and tender with a tasty crust. These people know what they're doing! The hot water cornbread was incredible. Staff was so awesome and friendly too. Owner/cook was sitting at a table eating as it was after the lunch time and he we had a good time visiting with him. I'm from out of town and when I travel I always look for a soul food restaurant. This restaurant was recommended by the staff at comfort inn West Monroe. They told me that they're only open for lunch hours so I had to find time in my work week to try the food before I left. Each day has specific items on their menu.
