Big Mike's has a traditional BBQ menu (brisket, chicken, ribs, wings, shrimp, turkey), and sides like mac & cheese, baked beans, sweet potato fries, coleslaw, potato salad, jambalaya, and the most amazing green beans I've ever eaten!! Really...get the green beans. It took several bites for me to appreciate them, but I'll be thinking about those beans for years to come! They also have Mac & cheese balls with marinara sauce, baked potatoes loaded or with bbq. For dessert they have a pecan pie and a baked custard pie. Walk in, go to the counter, order, get your drinks, have a seat and put your # they gave you on the stand. They'll bring your order to you. Food comes in styrofoam containers, it's already to go! The plasterer they give us strong, sturdy, the kind that holds up under pressure! Be sure to try both sauces. The sweet spicy is just perfect and the regular is down right tasty! Saw a pic of a scrumptious grilled shrimp salad on Facebook from Big Mike's. I added one to my next takeout order. Back home I was amazed by the quantity and quality. This was no cheap iceberg lettuce salad like you get most places. These greens were the good stuff, you know, NUTRIENT DENSE. It had tomatoes, red onion, cucumbers, a whole hard-boiled egg (protein) then shrimp with the house rub, basted with a sweet heat BBQ sauce then perfectly grilled. It took me two days to eat it all. I also tried the brisket, just a half pound. Oh Lord! Still rolling my eyes. It was so juicy and tender it fell apart in my hands and the sauce...well I ate it all like an addict, which I guess I am, now. Hint: Don't just order half a pound of brisket. read more

Gave this place a shot based on a recommendation from a co-worker and ordered some brisket and chicken to go. First off, the restaurant itself was everything you'd want a BBQ restaurant to be, with an immediate smokiness that made my tongue water. As an additional plus, I loved that I got to chose the sides and went with jambalaya and coleslaw. As someone that's not normally a huge BBQ person, I can easily say that this is the best BBQ I've ever had. The meat portions were generous and flavorful. The jambalaya, coleslaw, and 2 slices of bread were fun sides and delicious, albeit nothing super unique. As a side note, when I went around ~4pm on a weekday, they noted that they didn't have ribs available till a later hour. I look forward to returning and trying more of this deliciousness! read more

I ate here due to the proximity to my hotel. I ordered a takeout brisket salad. Glad I checked before I left as they hadn't put any actual brisket on the salad. The greens were crisp. The brisket was flavorful. It was a good sized portion as I couldn't eat it all. The servers were nice but unorganized. How did we not know about this gem before now? I learned about Big Mike's from the two Brits traveling through Louisiana. Jase raved about the ribs, so my husband (the baby back rib expert) and I decided to try them out. The rave reviews were definitely not exaggerated! The ribs were amazing! The meat fell off the bone without any effort, and the flavor of the meat and the bbq sauce (which I don't usually care for) was out of this world. Food was amazing. I travel all over Texas trying their barbecue so I had to give this a shot. I can tell you the baby back ribs for sure would beat anything I've ever tried in Texas. Went to the Houma location for lunch and have to say - this is the best bbq brisket and ribs I've had in Louisiana. After living in Texas for 15 years prior to retiring, I got used to excellent bbq. And Big Mike's is the closest I've had to central Texas style bbq in the state. The potato salad and coleslaw are also very good, the baked beans good. BBQ portions are huge btw. Lunch time can be a bit crowded but have some patience because the bbq here is worth it. read more

After a trip to the boat show next door, our gang descended on Big Mike's for some small-town BBQ. "Small-town" BBQ can be hit-or-miss, sometimes a genuine smoked meats experiences, other times just a stock grill with a bottle of sauce comprising the "bbq". Big Mike lands in the hit category, with genuine smoked meats and first rate sides. It's a fast-food style delivery, where you place an order and end up with food on styrofoam plates delivered to your table (a minor nitpick, but one that becomes a plus when it's time to pack up to leftovers). The BBQ is very good. The chicken was little on the fatty side, the brisket was not as moist as the best I've had, but it is still in A-list territory. I expect that some of the powerful good bbq vibes from New Orleans (which to my palate is developing quite a good range of bbq across town) helped raise the bar for places in surrounding areas. The mac-and-cheese is worth special note. It's creamy and cheesy and just like it should be. An appetizer with mac-n-cheese formed into bread-crumb coated balls are a novel take on the classic, served (a bit incongrously) with a side of red marinara sauce that actually does kinda work well with the dish. The balls are rich and decent sized, so don't count on eating more than two. (What's so funny? Would you like to tell the whole class what's so funny?) Sides are good, without too much mayo in the coleslaw and a decent potato salad. Five stars, because the brisket was genuine and properly crusted, and the mac-and-cheese, and I think you don't need to hold out for 60 miles going east or 200 miles going west (to Texas) to get a satisfying rack of ribs. read more

They want you to order it by the plate with a half a pound and two sides I don't want sides. A short trip to other locations that do BBQ might be a good idea to see how the rest of the world is doing it. This was my second time at Big Mikes. I was in Houma last year on business and tried it. This time it's right around the corner from my hotel. Very BBQ'ey place as far as decor, pretty much just what you would expect. You find the menus in a mailbox like newspapers as you walk in the door. Up at the counter you order your food and it's brought to your table. I ordered up the brisket and sausage combo with cole slaw and potato salad. The cole slaw and potato salad were just ok for me, but heavily mustard based potato salad is not my favorite. The brisket was really good with a nice crust on the edge. The sausage was good but nothing to rave about in my book. If you want some quick BBQ Big Mike's is good. I wouldn't hesitate to come back.
