Continental Sales "Lots-4-Less"

I haven't been here in a couple years, mainly because am no longer in the area, but from well…read morebefore the turn of the century we patronized Continental so I know quite well how the store operates. We try to come once or twice a year now but when we lived in the area (a mile away), we'd go at least twice a week. Some things have changed over time but the essence of the store is still there - gobs of food and drink at often great prices, non-food items (all different kinds) at reasonable to excellent prices. We could buy cases of pop for literally a fraction of what you might pay elsewhere. You just kind of have to go in there and experience it for yourself. I have known a few of the workers, particularly Mark, for many years. He's long been a dedicated employee (if he's still there). You will find lots of food items past the expiration date but with very few exceptions I have found the quality inside to be just as though the expiration date was a long way off. Chips are one of those items. The savings are stark here compared to those in regular grocery stores if you don't mind taking a chance of consuming the item after the listed date. I never batted an eyelash. I don't know if they still have tax free Tuesdays or 77 cent Fridays but unless they have dramatically changed, this is truly a worthwhile store to go to for all bargains. The neighborhood has regretfully declined a bit in recent years and its crime elements are on the rise so if you can, try to patronize Continental during daylight hours (perhaps this is why it's a bit more challenging to find a parking spot in their lot during daytime). Hope to go back sometime in the near future. If you live out that way or are within a half hour drive, it's well worth the trip - last I checked.

I hit every furniture store along Central Avenue and Belmont Avenue and this place was the best for prices and selection and it's also large and clean. Don't fear - most of the styles on the floor are very "Euro-esque" which caters to the clientele in the neighborhood. I witnessed a European lady buying couches in brown leather with chrome legs and tassels and financing it too. But they also have less aggressive traditional American styles. Just ask for Ali or Besam. If they don't have it in stock they will get from their warehouse in Elgin. I was looking for a very specific piece. My room is small and there is no room for bedside tables so I wanted a headboard/hutch with cubby holes to hold a water glass or clock radio. I use a futon with a wooden frame as a bed and I wanted a hutch to match. Ali and Besam found EXACTLY what I had in mind and it was only $80 so I was very happy. Hubby and I took advantage of the nice weather to walk down there and check it out what this store was about. Think about "Cook Brothers Warehouse," "Forman Mills," and those major discount retailers (TJ Maxx, Ross Dress for Less, and Marshall's). "Save & Tell Outlet" is like a combination of these three, with the entire downstairs basement featuring all furniture. Since we were on the lookout for a bed frame, we took a peek and found some possibilities. S&T is having a grand-opening special during the month of March on most of their furniture, saving up to $400 on some of the pieces. S&T carries overstock or liquidation from Macy's. The old Macy's tags were still present on their clothing items. I saw some young girls picking out bras and panties. I wasn't that curious, yet hubby was and went straight to the section. He then reported back to me that four (4) bras were on sale for $17. You do the math, and I would say that deal was pretty good! I also saw name-brand perfumes, kitchenware, curtains, shoes, and blankets. Overall, it's a decent store for the convenience of neighborhood residents.

It's a good place to shop for women's clothing, and especially at this location, the handbags. The cashier, a bit starchy, looked startled when I said "hello," and another cashier was dismissive when a customer was seeking someone to translate to Spanish. Surprisingly, a customer overheard this, approached the cashier and offered to translate. TJ Maxx employees aren't working on commission or making big bucks, so I understand to a point that there is no sense of urgency to assist. But customer service is still the core of the job. But I'm updating my review SOLELY on the cashier I met for the first time yesterday. It's been a couple of decades since I was a cashier, and I remember how much you had to bite your tongue when it came to some of the comments people would make. In my case, it was usually management and not the customers. But this location always has a colorful bunch of customers that just do the most RANDOMLY outrageous stuff for no absolute reason, from digging in their noses to screaming across the aisles to completely ignoring the pandemic six-footer rule. Lately, it's been fairly normal in there. That or I'm lucking out and going at all the right times. But yesterday, I was baffled by a conversation between a white, male customer and a black, female cashier. In what should've been a non-controversial conversation about the holiday season, she mentioned off-handedly that her daughters have polar opposite personalities but she had a good Christmas nonetheless. And this guy had the audacity to ask her if she had "Bebe's Kids." That was so unnecessarily offensive, and I know he would not ask a white lady cashier this same question. When she tried to professionally and calmly correct him that these weren't small children, he switched to asking her were they like the kid in "Home Alone." How many different ways are you going to insult this woman's parental habits? I was furious, but she played it so cool. Had she responded with what I was thinking, she'd have been terminated. For that, I commend her for keeping her cool under what was a very ignorant conversation. I finally said something about not needing a bag and pushing my stuff to the front to get him to hurry up, bag his stuff and get away from me (and her). She was just as nice to me, but I do wonder if those comments rubbed her wrong. Either way, her level of patience is management material, and I hope someone acknowledges that. Happy Holidays to her for being a patient, professional and take-the-high-road mother!
