I'm leaving a second review as it's been over 10 years since my last one. Ralph and his crew continue to be the best in the business. Throughout the last 10 years I've tried other palm trimming services a few times but always came back to Big Leaf Tree care. They are consistently good people to work with and take good care of my trees and yard. They always clean up and lock up if needed. I think they're priced fairly for the hard work that they do. Once my neighbor hired a cheaper service (we share scheduling responsibilities) but we suffered in quality. I will always use and refer Ralph and his crew to anyone looking for quality care and great customer service. I hired this contractor after he told me he was licensed and had a full company, which is why his price was higher. His license is expired, and although he brought a couple of guys, it was not the 'full crew' he claimed. He didn't bring proper tools - he used mine, and I had more tools than he did. That alone tells you the level of professionalism. The work he agreed to verbally, he later acted like he never said. He kept asking for more money, and even after I approved it, he still rushed the job and cut corners. I purchased 14 trees myself. Several were planted incorrectly - shallow, unstable, leaning toward the concrete, and with stakes sticking up. Trees were not centered, soil was thin, and some began sinking. These are signs of improper planting and possibly cutting the root ball. He left all the trash, mud, and tree boxes behind. He mixed my rocks with mud and left both the front and backyard in a huge mess. When I asked about cleanup, he told me, 'This is your mess, clean it up.' Completely unacceptable. After the job, he ignored every call and text. I gave him a final chance to respond within 15 minutes, and he still ignored me. I'm now moving forward with my reviews, complaint, and small claims. Extremely unprofessional and misleading experience. I also want to point out that CSLB shows his license is expired and marked 'not able to contract at this time.' He is not legally allowed to advertise himself as licensed or perform tree service work until he meets workers' compensation and bonding requirements. His website claims he is a 'Licensed Arborist & Tree Service,' which is misleading and not supported by CSLB records. read more

Originally found Ralph's business through Thumbtack when I needed some trees removed and one uprooted. Two trees were very large, over 30FT. Managed to so the two large tree removals with nor issues or damage to my property which I appreciated. Did the two smaller trees I needed done as well, one in my front gate and the other in my backyard. Had to schedule second session to finish up the one in the front yard and the uproot in the back due to his machinery issues, but now it's completed and looks good. -Beware if the job needs to be donein two days, you'll have to reach out to him, he won't reach out to you. - Other then that, no complaints. Relatively new to the area, I flagged a tree trimmer who was working at a neighbor's house for a brief estimate to trim 3 Queen Palm trees. He quoted me $150 and stated he'd come Saturday morning at 8AM. When he arrived I asked if he was bonded and insured and he said he was not. I then asked him to sign a liability waiver before beginning the job.It was written in both English and Spanish. The man studied the English document word-for-word as I explained what it was in very simple terms. I went inside the house for a minute and when I returned he was gone. I needed the job done ASAP and this event put a dent in my schedule. I immediately took photographs of the three palms and texted them to several tree trimmers on the local Craigslist for an estimate. Big Leaf was one of the first responders. Their quote was a reasonable $165. Ralph told me they were licensed, bonded and insured and would sign a liability waiver if I required it. They were the most reasonable of the 5 or 6 other trimmers I contacted, most of whom were not bonded and insured. Ralph and a crew of two came on schedule; Monday morning at around 8AM, complete with professional chipper and large truck. When they finished, I thought they might as well trim the Carrotwood tree in the front yard with all of their equipment already here... They did a great job for an extra $120 with little to no mess! Big Leaf Tree Care started out very good. Ralph was pleasant, informative, and accommodating. I used his service once to trim my three palm trees that worked out well and at a fare price. Months later I decided to again use Big Leaf Tree Care. The second time around I wasn't completely satisfied. Ralph and I agreed that he would remove those same three palm trees and MOST IMPORTANTLY completely REMOVE THE ROOTS. I repeatedly said remove the roots from the ground. The trees were cut, I paid him with understanding that he would finish taking out the roots (per Ralph his grinding machine was being repaired). However he never came back to remove the three roots and has since NOT RETURNED MY CALLS. I had hoped his seemingly good character would have him contact me, but No he continues to avoid my calls. I even went by the business address near 4th and Milliken and NO....Big Leaf Tree Care located there. I will not hire this company again. They are pretty expensive ($500 for about 7 hours of actual work of shrubs and branches removal), but the quality of their services is way below their price. And the clean-up was sloppy. They even did not give me an invoice for their work. The Company's rep, Ralph Rodriguez, in order to make his offer more attractive to me, threw in free cosmetic trimming of my two trees and, later, one shrub. After the work begun, he claimed that he only agreed to trim the shrub for free but I will have to pay extra $100 for the trees. Neither of which they did (not even the shrub). When I quoted what he said just six days ago, he conveniently could not remember that he had promised free trimming and started denying and piggy-backing, instead. Before the work begun, he was friendly and thankful, but as soon as he got my business and a problem arose, his cooperativeness disappeared, quickly. Definitely, not a company I would trust. After they left, I found numerous scratches and ugly marks on the concrete slab around the house, on the stucco, and on the fence. Everything started off great. He arrived early and finished promptly. We had agreed on removing roughly 6 bushes and a tree that was roughly 12-13 feet including the stump. I never saw him in person and I paid him through Venmo. Given his reviews, I thought I could trust the quality of his work. Boy was I wrong. I was surprised to find that he had only removed about 30% of the stump leaving an ugly mess behind. Additionally, on the bushes, he didn't dig out or remove the stumps but rather instead cut them as low as possible making it even more difficult to remove. I tried reaching out to him throughout a 3 week period after he supposedly completed the job but I was either ignored or told "I'll show up tomorrow", which he never did. I am disappointed with Ralph and his professionalism. I guess he is satisfied as being viewed as a subpar contractor that is happy to steal from his customers. Im not sure why he wasn't able to just stop by and finish the job I had paid for? I'll gladly update my review if he can come back and fix the mess he left. They trimmed our trees, however, when I asked about the bark on the palms and why that was not removed as well they told me it would kill the tree! Ralph Rodriguez (the owner) gave his word and promised that he would have the table fixed or replaced the following week.Not only has the table still not been fixed or replaced, but numerous calls and texts to Ralph Rodriguez's phone were not returned. Last Monday 10/30/17, they cut down and grind up the stump in my front yard. I found out the following day that they broke one of the sprinkler pipe and I notified Ralph Rodriguez and he said not to worry because he will send one of his guys to fix it on 10/31/17. No show. I keep on calling and leaving messages but no return call. I even sent email but still no response. It's been 3 days and still no response. This is very irresponsible and unprofessional. I called Ralph, the business owner, about four 35 year-old pine trees I needed to have removed. He confirmed a very competitive quote one of his co-workers had given me earlier and the next week he arrived with his crew and got all the work done. They worked quickly and effectively and clearly knew what they were doing. There was little room for error in removing the trees but they did a great job. I had them grind up the stumps of the trees for a very reasonable additional price. Since I was pleased with their work I had them thin and trim 4 other 35 year old pine trees on my property.
