I want to give "Harold" a huge shoutout and thanks for retrieving a screw nut that was stuck in a metal handle that had no access points to open up. He went above and beyond the call of duty to capture the nut with a magnet which he was then able to reattach the screw to the handle. This is what a hardware store should be. The moment I walk in, I am always greeted by an employee who asks me for what I need and swiftly walks me to exactly where what I need is located. I'm in and out in less than 15 minutes. Even less time if I didn't stop to look at a few more things. The cashiers are efficient and quick. The big stores have no where near the service. In fact I spend most of my time in them just looking for someone to help me, only to find that person knows less than I do. Big Joe's may cost a little more but for their kind of service, I'm willing to pay a little more. read more

This is the best hardware store in town. You can get help as soon as you walk in the door from knowledgeable employees -- no roaming the aisles for 30 minutes trying to find what you need or someone to help (speaking about you, Home Depot). The store selection is very good and you can search online before going in to look at prices and make sure what you need is in stock. Prices might be slightly higher than the mega stores, but they have what you need and will do everything they can to help -- which is well worth any small price difference. read more

Extremely disappointed. Do NOT purchase any major piece of equipment from them. I've used Big Jo for years as a hardware--have liked and supported as a more local business than box store. Just purchased an evaporative cooler that turned the house into a sauna. Went back next weekend to see options and was told "48 hour return policy" as shown in fine print on the receipt. While I understand their need to manage returns, I will never purchase from them again (other than minor expendable like screws). I will drive the hour to Costco in Albuquerque. Will likely switch to Lowe's for minor purchases too. $500 lesson learned. Bummer read more

Big Jo Hardware store is the bomb. Convenient location, full inventory, a most excellent staff, and reasonable prices. You'll be helped within 10 seconds of entering the store. And they'll stay with you and help you find stuff, no problem. They pay back in to the community with local sponsorships, so my money stays in Santa Fe. Best hardware store in town. Easy in, easy out, you don't need to walk 5 miles to pick up a pack of screws. Everyone is genuinely friendly and willing to help as you walk thru the door, and not in forced way like at wal-mart. The staff know their products and can easily find them, as well as offering suggestions to help. These guys are great. My heater was out and I needed a part that was hard to find. They called around, found the part for me, and called me back. They had to personally pick up the part from a wholesaler to get it to me. They're knowledgeable, diligent, and care about their customers. Can't say enough good about the people that work here. I've had knowledgeable help here in the past, but today two different guys had no idea what a stove bolt was, or a self tapping machine screw. Excellent service and quality products. They have people who know what they are doing. True Value prices are not as cheap as Loews, but the service and product makes it up for it. Example: they still offer brass hose fittings that will last for years -- Lowes has plastic and mystery metal that may last for a season. Of all the True Values in the area, I shop only at this one and the one in Espanola. I speak from experience. read more

Been going in there for years mainly because they are very likely to have what you need and are able to lay hands on it in seconds. If this doesn't work out, they are likely to have a sound suggestion. If you are "hardware challenged", this is the good place to go...they can frequently supply answers to problems because they are knowledgeable or will become so instantly. Very impressive and very refreshing, I wish more businesses were run like this one. read more

I own a custom cabinet shop just around the corner from Big Jo's Hardware. My business requires me to visit a hardware store at least once a week. I have such a busy schedule that spending 45 min at a big box store is not an option. Outstanding service. I was greeted at the door by one of the staff. When I told him I needed some shims to level furniture on saltillo tile flooring, he showed me two kinds--one from the plumbing department and another from carpentry. He knew exactly where everything was in the store and how to use it. You can't ask for more. read more

What a great place! Every time I go there I'm reminded that this is an old-fashioned business with real service. I needed one wing nut to replace a nut I'd lost off a pepper mill. As I walked through the door someone was there to greet me and assist me. He took the pepper mill and spent several minutes finding the right nut. All for a 30 cent sale.
