Let me start by saying I am not a barbecue guy. All the sauces and whatnot just isn't my scene, and out of all the cuisines, it would be on the bottom half of the pecking order. Pretty cool that reviews finally worked in a pinch and in our favor. Kind of snack dab in the middle of travel at high noon needing a quick but reasonable meal whilst in an iconic town. Clean restaurant and friendly atmosphere. Food wise it's your run of the mill average BBQ that will fill your belly but it isn't by any means a place I would search out to go eat at again. While the food didn't come out cold... it didn't come out piping hot (at least the Mac n cheese didnt) and that's always a turn off for me. Ribs are decent, not fall off the bone tender but tender with that bit of a pull off the bone. Not a big smoke flavor on those which was disappointing for me. The loaded pulled pork potato was much bigger than expected and one my kids loved it but again... the pork itself, lacking in that smoky flavor I long for in pulled pork. I live in the barbecue Capitol of Texas so when I judge other BBQ against the barbecue around where I live there is a high bar that has to be overcome. I do recommend this restaurant, it's brisket has a small smoke ring and not a lot of bark but does taste good. The sausage is finally ground, I prefer a more coarse ground sausage. The okra is excellent as are the sweet potato fries. The beans are served buffet style and are quite good. They offer a variety of sauces that you can get on your own so there should be something for everyone. One of the things that sets this restaurant apart are the great fried pies that you can get for dessert. read more

They have great food but have trouble getting my order correct. Twice I have gone there & asked for a bbq potato with NO chives. Today I was asked 3 times to repeat no chives. I get home & there are nasty chives in my potato. It's not like you can pick them out of the potato because it leaves the chive flavor. BBQ is all about timing. I'm thinking the rumored Texas BBQ country starts west of Texarkana somewhere. I can't find outstanding BBQ in Texarkana. I liked lunch today. Brian, the guy behind the cash register, was outstanding. The fries were home-cut and friend twice the way they are supposed to be. But the pulled pork sandwich was only so-so. It didn't have enough smoke flavor and the sauces served condiment-style--typical Texas BBQ--didn't enhance the meat only made it taste like BBQ sauce. I bought a pound of brisket to bring home. It was dry and fell apart...not fall-off-the-bone fell apart, just fell apart. I also ordered a fried blackberry pie. It was good but had no blackberries in it. I guess that's why they don't call it blackberries pie. It had the texture of blackberry juice and thickener. I'm not disappointed, but I'm not enthusiastic. I see some really good reviews on the place, and I don't doubt them. I think it's all about timing. read more

Not that bad really. I got the small chopped beef brisket sandwich plate with baked potato. The sandwich was dry, but just add some tasty bbq sauce and you're all set. The beef itself was moist and tasty. You can get all sorts of toppings on the potato, i just got butter and chives. They give you plenty of butter though. There was also salt and pepper on the skin which was nice, though it was a bit too heavy on salt for me. My friend got the sloppy joe, no complaints other than the sauce being too ketchup-y. Mac and cheese and corn on the side made the meal a good deal for the price. The staff were all super friendly and service was quick. Went there today with a friend who is Muslim. We ordered two loaded potatoes with no meat and we also said no bacon bits but they prepared the last two potatoes they had with bacon. I am Catholic so no meat on Friday during lent for me and I could have just raked it off but my friend who is Muslim won't eat anything that has even touched pork in any way. She told them we wanted new potatoes and they got some from the back and told us there would be a 8 to 12 minute wait. Then the lady said it would take too long to prepare them so she would just refund my friends money. (She paid for our meal) The lady refunded even the drinks which we were already consuming. She was very nice and very apologetic and I appreciated her attitude very much. The food is always good there and I definitely intend to eat there in the future. Although I'm not a competition-level BBQer, I smoke a reasonable amount of meat and I've read 20+ books on smoking meat. Thus Jake's is a challenge in that they have good food yet not great BBQ. I had the brisket and smoked sausage. Both were passing sold B- to C+. The sausage was tasty but really lacked any smoke flavor at all. The brisket was tender yet it felt like it had been rushed: Foiled via the "Texas crutch" as the experts say. :) The brisket rub should have been much heavier and I was deeply missing any bark at all. It takes me 18 hours to smoke a big chunk of meat. The lack of deep smoke ring and bark at all says Jake's is likely foiling and pushing meat out in eight. I did walk around the building to check out the smokers; they have several mobile units and one large in-house smoker. All appeared to be wood fired so that makes me deeply smile. The bright spot was the amazingly awesome sweet potato fries. Dusting of powered sugar really unique and yummy. While tasty, I would not make a repeat visit as I'd love more bark on the brisket. read more

The second stop on our Texas road trip led us to Big Jakes BBQ, right off the interstate and smack dab in the middle of nowhere. As soon as you walk in you can smell that tangy smoky BBQ smell which is always a good sign. I ordered a junior plate with pulled pork, Mac and cheese, and coleslaw. Maybe because we were only an hour away from Texas and it was 99 degrees out, my friend and I were expecting some dang good bbq. I would say the pulled pork was average, but was saved if you drowned it in the awesome smoky BBQ sauce they provide. The sides weren't spectacular either, they both could of used a little more flavor or spice. But all wasn't lost because of two things. The people working there all had that southern charm and were so nice. And they had free unlimited pickles....always a plus in my book. read more

Any restaurant that is named after a John Wayne movie is a place I'll eat at least once. I had the two meat sandwich, pork and sausage. The pulled pork was good almost great and the sausage was good almost not. I also had sweet potato french fries. They were over cooked a bit and covered in powdered sugar. I did like them although I prefer them a bit thicker and less crispy without sugar. They have a pickle, pepper and onion bar which was clean and well kept and the pickles were good, but I prefer banana peppers instead of sliced jalapeños. Also, free brown beans for all customers. You get free pinto beans if you dine in Everywoman should love that the food was pretty good not excellent but not bad either at all and I really liked the french fries . The Texas toast was spot on and the beef brisket was a little bit on the dry side but expected. My wife really love the pulled pork. After everyone in the area said that this was the best BBQ in Texarkana, I decided to satisfy my bbq craving by trying Big Jake's BBQ out. I was kind of expecting a sit down restaurant where the waitress would come by and take my order. What I found was a fast food BBQ joint. Now I don't have a problem with fast food BBQ so I decided to give it a shot. The host was very friendly and I got the pick 3 meal so I chose brisket, hot links and bbq ribs. The brisket was a little tough. The hot links were a bit stale. But the BBQ ribs were very very good. Fall off the bone meat which melts in your mouth when you take a bite. We were pleasantly surprised though, with great food, excellent service, and generous portions. We ordered two plates and an extra (loaded) baked potato to share. My husband got sliced brisket and sliced chicken, and I got chopped brisket and pulled pork. We both got coleslaw and mac & cheese for our sides.
