They put a price on a item then when I went to buy it said it's not for sale. Waste of time.

I held off for a bit on writing a review and then remembered this place after being in Lawrence…read morelast weekend. When I first came to this place, the owner was there and he was the nicest guy. We talked for quite a long time about different things. I ended up buying some goodies and left happy. That was about 4 years ago or so. Fast forward to 2018 when my sister was visiting from Texas and I was taking her to my favorite spots. I remembered my great experience from before so I took her here. This time, a lady was there and I mentioned how much I loved that store and turns out she's the wife of the owner (so she's the co-owner)... I was looking at some pillowcases and the pair was marked at $18 which I thought was a decent deal. A little high since other places go for less but I like supporting local so I don't mind. When I went up to the counter, she informed me that even though one pillowcase was marked for $18, it was for each.. so I was surprised the total was $36. The lady was rather rude and when I was pulling my card out to pay she said, "We are a cash only business and if you had been here before, you would know that'. I won't return. I can't deal with people who are just lousy at customer service. She could have said, "Oh I am sorry, we only accept cash" but instead, she chose to be a jerk. Of course, my sister was like, "Wow, and you said this place was awesome; guess not". It's always a sad thing when you rave about how great a place is then when you take someone new, the place ends up being subpar. I left that store feeling sad and for my money, I would rather go down the street to the many other antique stores. *SIDE NOTE* I wish I could give the man I saw the first time 5 stars because he was tops.

It's actually called Lawrence Antique Mall. I spent a good amount of time in here and it was busy…read morebecause it was on a Saturday after the Christmas Parade. Place has 3 floors total full of a variety of items to choose. Some areas you could barely walk through. It was difficult to find anyone to help you. I found several items with no prices on them. One item I really wanted, so they called the dealer and no answer. So they offered to take my number and hold it until further notice. Most of the things were over priced. On 1 item I asked if they would take a little less and made an offer, but she said I can only go 10% less because it's rare. I said I would take it. Then she went to take the tag off and said I can't do 10% because it's less then $30.00. The item was $28.00, so only $2.00 from receiving the 10% discount. Yes, I went ahead and bought it only because it's a Christmas present! Just the principle of the situation. Before I paid I simply asked if they charged a transaction fee if I used a debit or credit card. I was told that they charge 3% extra. I was just a little short of having enough cash, so I had to go the other route. After looking my receipt (I always ask for one) over and comparing it to my merchandise prices it was incorrect. In fact they charged 4% transaction fee. So my $28.00 "rare" item turned into being $29.12 plus 9.3% tax on top of that price, just an example. Another problem was the bathroom was closed or out of order. I'm not sure if it was really out of order or if they just didn't want all the people using it? If you needed to use the restroom it was like 10 blocks one way down the street! Needless to say I wasn't real happy with my overall experience here.

I think that the…read moremerchandise is overpriced, but there is an excellent selection of good silver jewelry that you don't see everywhere. For my birthday my husband bought me a necklace, when my birthday came he realized that he had left the item in the store. When he called he found out they had retrieved the item and put it in a safe place. I am grateful that they didn't replace it in stock-which they could have done. However, it would have been very easy for them to do two minutes of research and call us to let us know that they had the necklace. Sometimes a little extra effort can really improve business more then advertising.

Of course there are other things too -- that's where the Etc. comes in -- but it's always the art deco stuff that attracts my attention. The posh Brighton collection is apparently The Etc. Shop claim to fame. The coordinated accessories, which include shoes, jewelry, watches, sunglasses, belts and more, are very nice, but they're not any more attractive than the other accessories throughout the store and a bit pricey for my taste. If I splurge here, I'll take the ultra cool Macintosh-inspired lamps over the pricey-but-average Brighton items any day.
