Truly one of the MOST AWESOME toy stores EVER, ESPECIALLY if you're into retro action figures. Over the years, I've found toys that were almost impossible to find anywhere else including newly unopened: Master of the universe figures from the 1980s, TMNT figures (the originals from 1988), Robocop figures from the 1980s, Batman figures, and many, many, many more. Also lots of great toys from the 1970s (original star wars movie figures and action figures), and 1990s (Spider-Man and Spawn to name a few). But action figures aren't their only strong points. They've got everything. Old school video games, comics, and other memorabilia fill the store and are sure to fill your geeky heart with joy. What's even better is they also allow trade ins, so you can trade your old stuff for either cash or other collectables. Holy. Cow. I happened to be searching the web for comic book shops and Big Fun came up in my search. As I was already on High Street, I decided to head further south and stop in. Big Fun is located in the Short North so parking is on the street - either in an open space or at a meter. I parked across the street and about half a block away. A beautiful day for a short stroll. This was my first visit (and first hearing of this place). I was compelled to go because a reviewer online has stated that this place, "looked like a comic shop threw up a toy store." How could I not make the trip??? Big Fun is a shotgun-shack type of building so it is not terribly large. That said, there is enough stuff jam-packed into this store that you could fill another store alongside. Maybe two. I have never, ever seen so much nostalgia/kitsch/collectibles/happiness in one spot. It truly was sensory overload. Every direction that I looked (with the exception of the tiny, narrow floor) had stuff displayed. Shelves, cases, racks, counters...you name it. There was even stuff hanging from the ceiling. Before you even enter the shop there is stuff to look at in the windows. A lot of stuff. But inside? Prepare to crane your head a full 360 degrees. That's up, down, and side to side. I visited here on a Wednesday near lunchtime and the place was hopping. Several families inside along with a staff of about 4 or 5. And me. It's narrow anyway but adding about 15-20 people in there really made for some juggling for space. To everyone's credit, we all behaved and played nicely and everyone got to see everything they wanted to. I cannot begin to accurately catalog all that was offered, but here is a tiny sampling of items to delight: action figures, models, bumper stickers, magnets, keychains, dolls, puzzles, games, novelties - retro stuff, too, like you would have seen in the back of comic books or the old Johnson Smith catalogs, Lego body parts, candy, toys...etc., etc., etc. Prices were extremely reasonable and covered the gamut from inexpensive to collectible. A price for everyone! This store is a visual carnival and the staff is fabulous. Chatty, friendly, very helpful. I absolutely must return to look again because I know that I did not see everything. It's like visiting the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. You have to go multiple times in order to see it all. This place is Big Fun, indeed. read more

It almost felt like a mini museum! There is a wide variety of stuff in here, new and old. But if you're into action figures, that seems to be their biggest forte. Man, talk about big fun. I couldn't imagine a more fitting name. Now, they have a ton of stuff in here if you're ready to relive your childhood going back at least to the 70s. Star Wars figurines galore. Action figures of all kinds, really. I can't even name them all without leaving something out and bringing myself shame for it. Toys of all kinds representing almost every cartoon or sci-fi movie around. But my personal and particular favorite was all the Legos. They had quite the collection of even the priciest and rarest Lego sets on display, for sale, and priced accordingly. I easily spent an hour looking at all of them and daydreaming up story lines. My most favorite would have to be the "build your own" Lego minifigure. I was so tempted. With the selection of heads, bodies, legs, and accessories, I could have spent the rest of the day there making one. All said, I think I gotta get back in here next time I'm in town. I've never even heard or seen this store before. My friends and I were walking around to kill time and we walked in here as we saw many others walking in. It's a tight space though. We had to squeeze past other customers. Lots of fun things in here to take you back to your childhood though. You can find action figures, prank stuff, collectible items, magic 8 balls, comic books, Barbie dolls, etc. It's fantastic! Some items are cheap and some are pricey! Take your time looking around! Top notch toy store!!!! Just don't try to go in there on a Saturday around noon because you won't be able to move around much. Their aisles are so small!!! They are cram packed with toy goodness, but if you move too quickly or if you have any extra meat on your bones, you're going to knock something off a peg and have the torturous experience of bending down to pick it up. I haven't done that many squats in a long time! But if you are looking for a toy from your childhood, it's very likely you will find it in this store! Big fun is in a very small space down in the southern half of The Short North. And I mean small, and narrow, and cramped especially with cases cutting through the center taking space. If there's more than seven customers here and it is a squeezing, 'excuse me,' elbows bruising ribs kind of place. Yes it's for kids, but I suspect its biggest clients are obsessive geeks who come here to add to their vintage collection of cards, action figures, dye casts, Star Wars toys, or comic books. Other items include Buckeye stuff, Christmas items, novelty cards, WWF junk, faux signs, fridge magnets, and games. I love the old bay windows in the front with a vignette of items displayed. So, to start off this story, I was trying to walk south of the convention center, only to end up walking in the opposite direction and not realize I was going the wrong way for 20 minutes. On the bright side, I stumbled across Big Fun. Enticed by all the action figures and figurines and comic book collectibles, I decided to pop in. I was immediately greeted by the friendly staff. I asked if they carried any Samurai Jack merchandise (which is what I will pretty much ask any toy store). The gentleman in a vest looked thoughtful, and brought me over to the counter, where one of his coworkers brought me an Aku action figure hanging from a shelf. I love collecting Samurai Jack march, but $80 was a steep price that I didn't want to pay for on an impulse buy, especially since I packed super light for a short weekend business trip. Despite that, I had fun geeking out with the staff over Samurai Jack. They asked who Aku's voice actor was, and I instantly answered "Mako!" and that season 5 was Greg Baldwin after Mako passed away. Like Aku, Uncle Iroh from the series Avatar was also voiced by Mako, and then voiced by Greg Baldwin after Mako's passing. They were super friendly, and I recommend visitors to pop in and explore their offerings and trinkets. read more

Big Fun is a great way to relive your childhood memories of action figures to comic book characters. They have it all here. Not only kids come in here, adults do as well to trade game cards, action figures, etc for cash as well as purchasing it. For my husband it's cool because his favorite action figures are here. He could spend hours looking at it all. Although for the sake of time, we only spend 30 minutes. If I were a huge fan of all the comic books, action hero's, etc I would be all over this store. Big Fun is all that. It's a great place to get something for that comic book nerd. There's all kinds of classic toys. If you want something unique look here. There's lots of other cool stuff to mess around with. If you're looking for something for someone and you have no idea what they want you would do well to come here. It has tons of classic action figurines and toys and some just plain goofy stuff. They have some authentic toys, and most are replicas but it's hard to tell them apart. An example here is the Evel Knievel stunt figure. It looks like the real original thing. Here you can also find that bird figure that bobs into a water cup. There's one bad thing about this place and that is there's not enough room. Lots and lots of random shit is piled up and it takes some time to sort through it all. This makes coming here an adventure so be sure to have enough time before you come in. I check Big Fun if looking for some special gift. It's fun just to look through it. I've been to several retro toy stores in Chicago and this place has them beat hands down. Where Big Fun really shines is in the selection, condition and display of the toys you remember from your childhood. Tons of wrestlers, He-Man, Star Wars and lots more are stuffed in every nook and cranny of this place. Did you know they made a action figure of MC Hammer? I didn't, until I saw one decked out in shiny purple on the shelves here. Don't miss this place, they're open comparatively late for a retro toy store and it's a great place to spend an hour with friends or your special someone reminiscing about the good old days and thinking how crappy it would be to grow up now. read more

Oh man did I really enjoy this toy shop! Such a great selection of both new and vintage toys. I didn't really know what to expect going in but I took the Pee-Wee Herman welcome sign as a good sign. They actually had a lot of Pee-Wee stuff within the store. It was awesome! I was able to pick up a vintage Pee-Wee's playhouse lunch box for a pretty reasonable price. To be honest, everything was pretty reasonable priced here. I've seen a lot of the stuff they had here on sale at other places for a lot more. But yeah, great selection, pretty much floor to ceiling stuffed with toys. Action figures, lunch boxes, obscure magic tricks, games, just crazy cool stuff. The employees here, who I assume are the owners, are super nice and accommodating. Super cool place that I can't wait to visit again in the future. If I hadn't held myself back I would have spent waaay too much money here. I'll have to widen my budget a bit on the next visit so I can pick up some more great stuff. read more

Big Fun is a fun place to browse for those vintage toys from 60'sish to the 90's. Lots of action figures, an arcade machine, dolls, and toys. This place is just filled with stuff from the floor to the ceiling; you could spend an hour or two in here browsing at everything. My husband and I were attending a friends White Elephant party around Christmas and wanted to find something different, so we came here! For $10 we found an awesome Leg Lamp from A Christmas Story movie... it was one of the plug in kinds so it was smaller, but it was one of the gifts that everyone kept trading for at the party! Big Fun also employs a helpful, fun staff as well! The store is a little small and it can get crammed on the weekends. A great place to check out of you're in the Short North! read more

The name says it all. I was in love with this place before I even set foot inside. Being from Pittsburgh, it gave me that feel of cramped that most stores have. As odd as it may seem, it works for me. I enjoy being cramped in and being overstimulated by the amount of product on the shelf, but only when it comes to a toy store. Especially one that produces thoughts of nostalgia. I came in here to look for gifts for my two nieces but ultimately ended up indulging myself. What can I say, I'm a kid myself. I was impressed by the throwback toys and board games they had. That may be why it took me longer to browse, each time I saw something that reminded me of my younger years it added minutes onto the amount of time I spent in this store. That's not to say that I didn't spend any time on newer items I had never seen before. I especially stopped in my tracks when I came across 'Pittsburgh 68.' A zombie shuffling card game, no zombie fiend's collection is complete without one. The only gripe I have about this place is that when it is busy you will be pushed along while looking at items. Not that that is any reason to deduct stars, but it can be annoying when you want to read the packaging of an item. read more

I discovered it on accident a number of months ago when I was in the area, so when we made a trip up to Columbus for the day, I knew I needed to stop in and that my boyfriend really needed to check out what Star Wars things they had available (he's a collector and has been looking for some original action figures).
