I visited the Big Chill for a concert. This is a simple venue that can be spruced up for a special occasion, but stands on its own visually. This was a candle light night, which was more of an initiate setting. There was a bar set up with limited options for drinks. There was not food, but they allowed food to be brought in from the outside, and they're near a restaurant. Overall, it was a neat experience. I think that the staff worked for a private event business, not necessarily the venue. So there's a good chance your experience may differ. read more

I attended a wedding here yesterday and was pleased with the entire experience. I would've given them 5 stars but the parking lot provided limited spaces. The staff was very friendly and attentive. The space itself was beautiful and didn't require much in terms of decoration. Although I'm not aware of what happened behind the scenes, from the perspective of a guest, I would recommend this space for an event. The food was good and the drinks were great as well! read more

This is a CIAA weekend review. The Big Chill is definitely properly named, especially the BIG part, the place is huge, several rooms including one huge main room. It's also a laid back place for the most part so it was chill. A little on the fancy side but nobody was wearing tuxedos so it was chill in my eyes. The night started slow and the size of the place kind of made it look too big but as people arrived the extra space was definitely needed and appreciated. The club is big enough that you can dance and have a good time without constantly bumping into everyone around you but also not so huge that you won't still be around other people. The bartenders were good and made the drinks strong but at the same time very reasonable priced. I'm used to DC prices when drinks are going for 10+ dollars, so a 5 or 6 dollar mixed drink was right up my alley. Security and the front door were cool, they knew people were there to have a good time and didn't go through all the pretending that their club was extra hot by making people wait outside for no real reason. One odd thing I did notice was that the group I was with all brought tickets in advance and some of the group, their tickets were brought by one guy, well at The Big Chill, the person who actually bought the tickets must be present for you to gain entry. I could see this being a problem if you get your tickets from a friend in advance but don't arrive to the party with them, you may have to wait. No huge issue though. There is no real parking lot and if there is, it is either small or hidden, so we valeted the car but even that was affordable and honestly you just feel extra fancy when you pull up to a venue and somebody opens the door for you. The Big Chill was a cool place to have a night out, definitely more fun if you're with a bigger crowd because like I said the place is a bit on the massive side but I judge places about how much fun I had and I had a cool time. I recommend The Big Chill for your partying needs. read more

This is Charlotte's little hidden gem of a venue. Complete with leather couches, a full bar, a fire place and 3 distinct spaces for your event (though typically you use all 3 if your guest list is over 150). The decor is rehabbed art deco and includes a stage for a DJ or band, and the place can fit a 250 person wedding easy. Tyler is the manager and runs a tight ship - with great attention to detail and over and above service. Servers are always cheerful, helpful and attentive. Parking is a bit of a struggle since it shares the lot with Dilworth Neighborhood Grille, but the prime location to Uptown and Dilworth makes going to the bars after the event super easy! read more

This should be one star but because of COVID I have to cut them a break for obvious reasons. I know it has been tough for all businesses, and especially small businesses and even more especially small businesses whose income is dependent on all the things the pandemic has shut down, like large scale gatherings and food service. That being said, I have interacted with a lot of businesses that are suffering the same exact restrictions and setbacks but none have been as disappointing and frustrating to work with as what I've learned about Big Chill. Their main issue, among many, is simply that they are clearly robbing Peter to pay Paul in order to hungrily grow their franchise. This has been obvious to me for years but it wasn't technically causing an issue for them or their guests because there was always incoming business; however, now it has become clear as day that the way they have handled their customer service--particularly as a business in the customer service and hospitality industry--is abysmal. From poor and insensitive communication to going rogue altogether, working with this group has been a thorn in the industry's side among a lot of other really pleasant experiences from other companies and vendors, given the circumstances. I hate that something as tragic and unprecedented as this pandemic has become my final straw, but it has. I can compare them to too many other competitors who are suffering the same issues but have not offered the same excruciating experience--but rather gone above and beyond. In a new world where one of the only currencies left is simply positive interaction, Big Chill is (quite literally, by the way) bankrupt. read more

I came here to participate in a NEW event (Network of Executive Women). It was our Spring event and we were here to listen to Jon Gordon speak about books he had written, and words of inspiration. The place was filled to the brim with people. I was at table 26 and there were about 8 people per table, if that gives you any indication. Since the parking lot is so small, the Big Chill had valet available. The valet worked so hard, they could not keep up with just the sheer amount of volume coming through. I sat in the valet line for about 15 minutes. Once I got out of my car, weaved my way through the tables and sat down, the presentation was great. They have a good stage area, and I think for the most part everyone could see very well. The bathrooms were a bit tricky to access because of the amount of people, and could use some updating. We had lunch available, which was a buffet. They had amazing chicken. I don't know what was on it, but it was definitely a couple notches above the kind of food I expect from these venues. They did a good job at directing people when to go to the buffet. I think it took about 20 minutes to get to the line. Once everything was over I think it also took about 20 minutes to get my car back from the valet. I think most people took advantage, so at the end there was a mad dash. overall, great location, off Morehead, and great venue. Just be aware of parking (because the surrounding businesses will tow)! read more

Such a beautiful venue for weddings and/or wedding receptions. I was here for a friends wedding in August and was pretty surprised with how nice everything was. From the room where the wedding was held, to the pre-reception area, with the cash bar, then going into the main reception room... it was so beautiful and decorated so nicely. The Big Chill is a very large, upscale establishment with a huge dance floor. They typically host private events, wedding receptions and banquets. My daughter's wedding reception took place at Big Chill last evening, January 24, 2015. Tyler started our journey with the tour and explaining each aspect of the process. Jessica, one of his staff became our contact and our coordinator as the day came closer. The service, food, and overall experience was beyond excellent! Jessica, Mackenzie and the rest of the staff serving us were amazing. They made sure that each aspect of the evening went off without a glitch. I'm going to be on the lookout for a future event here just to crash for the food. If you're not-so-sure of the price, this place is worth every penny spent you'll spend here. They meet with you three different times, and go over every single small little detail of your wedding and exactly how you wish it to be. Big Chill is an excellent venue. My husband and I had our reception here and it was exactly what we wanted. The venue has a vintage vibe and a TON of character (one of our guests said he felt like he was in the Great Gatsby). The layout is also perfect for a wedding as there is a separate (indoor) Cocktail space, a separate reception space, and a separate buffet space. They even have an area for you and your new spouse to cut the cake so that you are in view of all your guests! The venue is beautiful on the inside, but it's truly the food and staff that make it shine. The staff are excellent, our wedding coordinator, Jessica, was with us every step of the way. She made sure our wedding ran so smoothly. We were relaxed, we didn't feel rushed, we GOT TO EAT OUR DINNER! That is rare for the married couple at a wedding. She took care of issues and worked directly with our vendors so we didn't have to be the go-between for our baker, florist, DJ, etc. The wait staff the night of was excellent. Anything we wanted or needed was there before we had to ask. We had several guests tell us that they never had to chase down a member of the waitstaff for hors d'oeuvres and they hardly had to wait at the bar for drinks. They are so flexible with the bar packages that we were able to pre-buy our favorite local craft beer to share with our guests. We certainly didn't make the catering easy for them either, we have several friends and family members with Celiac and so it was important to us that the entire buffet be gluten free so they didn't have to worry. Jessica and the rest of the staff were so accommodating, they had no problem providing us with a gluten free menu, and even sourced gluten free rolls from a local bakery (the rolls were an additional charge, but it was important to us)! Several of our guests commented on how good the food was, and one of my co-workers even said he went up for thirds! If you are even thinking about having your wedding or function here, do not hesitate! It's an amazing spot and the staff are the epitome of professionalism and service. I have thought long and hard about writing this review. After all I do realize that I am affecting someone's livelihood with writing a negative review. But learning from personal experience I wouldn't want for another bride to go what I went through. What was upseting is that the owner believes she can speak to the client any way she wants after receiving the deposit. The venue could definitely use some touching up. There are nicks in the wall, and the linens they placed on the day of my wedding were wrinkled. This is owned by Darcy Donevan and the manager is Tyler Lee. Darcy is a very irate woman and extremely unprofessional. They waive the rental fee, but they really do get you on other things. The prices they charge on liquor alone, is what you would pay at a club. After placing my deposit, Darcy said they would contact me as the time got closer. Probably what would have saved a lot of confusion is if she was clear in regards to the time frame. For example, okay well we will contact you 2 months or a month before your wedding date to finalizing details. Instead of calling and arguing and getting irate over the phone with me. They were very professional during the food taste. However, the portion and the quality that is displayed are two different things. What they initially do in the food tasting is set up for up to 4 people. And when they serve the entrees and appetizers they plate it all on one family size plate. So on the day of the wedding obviously everything looked so smaller. Also, our appetizer portion, for example the beef skewers and etc we're literally 1/2 the size of what was displayed, overcooked, and bland. We were thinking of adding crabcakes onto our appetizer menu. The owner wanted to charge us $ 10 per crabcake, it was to be a plated appetized not an h'ordeuvres. That was the size of a 1/2 dollar. Which was absolutely ridiculous. Also our designer was informed that we would not have to do take down of the design until the next day. But we were told that unfortunately would have to take it down the night of the wedding reception. Because Tyler didn't want to come in the next day to open up. They only allow you to set up the day of because the venue is rented out the day before. They also tried to later on charge me for the time spent setting up for the wedding reception. They claim to have a chef that was . previously employed as a head chef at Bentleys and Mimosa. I HIGHLY doubt that. I would suggest for people to save their money and go for a venue, that one is more professional. Two, where you have more control over your menu and pricing. Such as Duke Mansion or Ballantyne Country Club. I have had two girlfriends that held their wedding receptions and it went without a bang. However, if your more budget concious. I would suggest renting out a venue where you have control over your own cater and be able to supply your own liquor. By the way there is no free refill for soft drinks so they can get you quite a it there. Good luck to whoever uses them in the future,hopefully they have learned to be more customer service orientated and not stick it to people! We just had our corporate recognition event at the Big Chill. The event was fantastic because of Tyler and his wonderful team. Tyler made certain that everything went smoothly. We were amateur event planners, but Tyler made everything easy by showing us pictures for decor options, connecting us with event decor companys, bands and photographers. He paid attention to every detail and even made suggestions/modifications to our existing plans that helped the event run smoothly. The venue is perfectly designed for cocktail hour, dinner and after event celebrations. I can see weddings, parties and corporate events easily accomodated here, especially with responsiveness and flexibility that Tyler and his team offer.
