Spicy Miso Soup
Ian F.

Wonderfully small, beautifully decorated Sushi restaurant. The service was excellent, our waitress was pleasant and very helpful. My son and I went here on a snowy Saturday, and besides a table of 6 we were the only ones In the restaurant. The dining area is small, with close tables and from my experience, it does seem that it may get a bit loud when packed with diners. The menu is eye catching ( we used our phone, not to sure if they have a physical menu) both in offerings and in price. THIS IS NOT A CHEAP DINING EXPERIENCE! Saying that, it is a Sushi experience like no other that I have come across, ANYWHERE I have dined in my travels! We started with the Spicy Miso soup, almost a Ramen like broth, with a bit of heat. (My heat tolerance is very high as well as my son) so would this be to hot for you? I'm not to sure. RECOMMENDED! Followed by the Shrimp Tempura, again, some of the best that I have had. We even left a couple of pieces until the end of the meal and those were as crispy and held shape when lifted by the tail as the first shrimp! RECOMMEND! Lastly we had the Jupiter Rain Premium Oshi. A feast for the eyes! Each piece was so delicious and almost melt in your mouth. RECOMMENDED! We also had the green Tea, this was free refills, and was nice and hot. An excellent Sushi experience, the whole meal was out of this world! Unfortunately, my only down side to this dining experience was for spending $59 for 2 people, (including tip) we did walk away hungry. Not starving, but hungry. They had my favourite Sushi, Unagi Nigiri (BBQ Eel), but these were almost $5 a piece, and between my self and my son we could have easily polished off 6 pieces. So, great experience, excellent Sushi, quality through the roof, but you're gonna pay for it.

Bluefin tuna, melt in your mouth! Thick cut as well!

This is a cute japanese restaurant with amazing customer service. The restaurant is quite small, maybe 16 tables.. The drink menu is folded into origami folded on the table. Menu has lots of colorful photos to assist in decision making.. The food comes out beautifully plated. The wasabi is fresh and it's all in the details.. the plate garnish was impeccable, like art! We ordered bluefin tuna sashimi and it was melt in your mouth! The rest of the sushi was very nice as well.. we had the ginger, rosemary creme bruleè and sweet potato pana cotta for dessert. They don't charge outrageous for the desserts either. I had a yuzu lemonade which was fresh and delicious! We were offered more tea even after we paid the bill, which is often overlooked at other restaurants. I am very pleased with this entire experience. Would both reccomend and return!

I heard about Big Catch from my colleagues. This restaurant has 3 different pricing on three different menus. Prices on SkipTheDishes are the most expensive of the 3 menus, second would be the dine-in menu and lastly the take out menu. Both the SkipTheDishes and the take out menu have platters and combos. The dine-in menu doesn't offer platters or combos but they have special of the day items. When I say special of the day, I do not mean cheaper prices for the item they have listed as special of the day. The name "special of the day" should have been called "feature of the day". So here is an example: The Big Catch Combo on SkipTheDishes is $21.45 and if you went there and had it to go it would be $16.50. Yes that is a big difference. Another example would be their special Oishi Sushi: Eat in $15.95, Takeout $14.75 and Skip $19.15. Pricing of every item that are the same on the three menus are all different. If you are ordering platters or combos the price differences are huge. Don't forget the delivery charge on Skip as well. Just one platter on Skip vs take-out price difference ranges from $20 to $40. I live in Downtown and it takes me about 20 mins to get from downtown to Big Catch. I came on a weekday when it was about -17 degrees and I thought to myself if I wanted to dine in or take out (to save a few $$). I ended up dining in instead. Sushi tastes a lot better if eaten right away. I ended up getting the 2 Oishi sushi: Autumn Haze and The Una. First off, I really liked the way the presented the dishes. It was really nice laid out. The sushi was made with care. I really liked the flavor. All the ingredients were fresh. The flavor in the autumn haze was interesting because they added like peppermint leaf or some sort of minty leaf in the sushi. The Una had the unique non spicy ginger topped on the sushi. The flavor was so unique that I have never had it in sushi back in Vancouver or in Japan before. Don't get me wrong, the chef and server here are Japanese and I am sure the sushi here are very authentic. I am sure there are restaurants in Japan that serves sushi using the ingredients they used to bring out that unique flavoring. I liked the decorations or sauces that they put on the side of the plate. They were very light in flavor but they were good. The wasabi was stamped with a nice flower and that was very pretty making the entire dish photogenic worthy. At the end, I also got dessert. I got the Sweet Potato Panna Cotta. It was small but it was very light and refreshing. It had a very light hint of sweetness all from the natural sweet potato. Desserts are not offered on the Take-out or the Skip menu. Service here was awesome. I was checked on couple times on how thing were going. Like most Japanese restaurants in Calgary and towns, tea is not free. There is a $1.25 charge for tea. I ended up getting hot water with lemon. I had enough tea at work already and don't think I want to drink any more. Décor inside is really nice. The restaurant is very small and I do suggest making a reservation when coming here. I came on a cold day and there was a table available right away. In Calgary, it is not easy to find a good Sushi or Japanese Restaurant. I have tried many Japanese restaurants in Calgary and it has always been a hit or miss. Prices are always on the higher end when it comes to specialty restaurant like Big Catch. Being from Vancouver, Calgary doesn't have a lot of good Japanese options. I do highly recommend trying Big Catch. The restaurant is located inside the Heritage Station Development Plaza. There are plenty of free parking out front.

- Atlantic Salmon Nigiri - Albacore Tuna Nigiri - Unagi Nigiri - Green Halo - Jupiter Rain - Spicy Tuna Roll

Big Catch is located next to Tim Hortons. Had: Prawn Tempura (Ok) $9.95 Green Halo (Good) $15.95 Jupiter Rain (Good) $15.95 First time trying Unagi Nigiri (It was really good) ($3.45 per) Spicy Tuna Roll (was ok, just like any other sushi restaurants) ($6.50) And had some other Nigiri sushi like Salmon ($2.45 per) and Albacore Tuna ($2.45 per) There some missing sushi that I order that's wasn't on the plate (had to re-order them) The special roll (rectangle cube size) seem small. Nigiri sushi (has small portion of rice) which is good or bad depends on how you want your sushi. Anyway when you leave, they even lend you out the door. Unique experience, first restaurant that I went to that do that. They make you feel, your important to them. Haha Overall: Had good experience! Food is good but could be better. *Wish there more option tho.

Extremely friendly service and beautiful plating. All of the items we ordered were of high quality and tasted amazing. The restaurant is quite small with limited tables and does get a bit loud but still an enjoyable experience. We had squid tempura, assorted sashimi, dynamite rolls , autum haze , and passion sunrise. For dessert the ginger cream brûlée and sweet potato panacotta (holy cow amazing desserts) If you are into ordering a large variety of different rolls this probably isn't the place . Most options come with 7 rolls and it is a bit pricier (than most places I usually go to but you can tell the it is higher quality). Would recommend and would come back.

Went to the new restaurant and we enjoyed our meal. We ordered a couple of appetizers, two speciality rolls, nigiri and a regular dynamite roll. I particularly enjoyed the Autumn Haze roll and tuna nigiri. Tuna was melt in your mouth. The Autumn Haze had a subtle smoky flavour from the scorched salmon. The food is presented beautifully. Seriously, a work of art. The sauces on the side are edible, as are the flowers and other garnishes. Big Catch doesn't rely on mayonnaise or creamy sauces for flavour. Big Catch still does big takeout. Their takeout menu is specially priced combos and platters. I've ordered from Big Catch for parties and it's always a big hit.

A PLUS PLUS SERVICE there is a huuuuge, I mean huge.... 3 pages of roll selection. I'm so glad that I went with a group of 6 people! The nigri and sashimi is super fresh! The appetizers were so good as well!!!!

Awesome. I ate half of it before remembering to snap a photo. Truly wonderful.

First things first, this place is located inside a farmers market. I almost left when I saw the empty parking lot. Coupled with the awesome ratings and the lack of people it was a total contradiction. After getting over my initial hesitation I proceeded to look at the menu. When I looked at the menu I was totally impressed. Amazing food, amazing presentation. Wow. Sorry about the picture. I was so hungry I ate half before remembering to take a photo. I recommend everything. The salmon miso soup was awesome and the agedashi tofu was heavenly. Btw, I showed up at 12:00 pm Sunday. By the time we got our food the seats were all taken and there was a line up. Definitely recommend this place. I will definitely come back. I

Artfully arrananged nigiri.

This is the polar opposite of the my previous sushi bar review, although both restaurants are good. Personally, I don't get the whole multi-ingredient roll thing. Very Canadian, I guess. That said, I have never seen such beautiful and elaborate sushi presentation. The plating is truly gorgeous. Little works of art. The fish quality is very high. We had one roll and a variety of Nigiri, all the fish was very good. I found the rice to be a little under-seasoned, another nod to Canadian diners, I am guessing. Chicken Karaage was excellent, crispy and tender, with a sweet sauce and white sauce that was sort of like a loose-liquidy potato salad. Don't know how else to describe it... I think it was mostly there for visual appeal. Successful dish. Tempura was perfectly crispy, with nice fresh fish and veg inside. The sauce here too was on the weak side, and we could have used more daikon oroshi. Might be an idea to offer it with salt, as an alternative. This kitchen is clearly talented. I'd like to see what they'd serve to a room full of Japanese people. This is a pretty little room, in a strip mall. No sushi bar, which is too bad. I like to see them preparing. Service was very quick, servers are super friendly.

Jupiter roll

After reading the numerous 5 star reviews for Big Catch, we got really excited to try their sushi. So we decided to go there for our anniversary lunch "food crawl". So for our first time eating there we ordered their Big Catch combo( 6 piece dynamite roll, 6 piece picy tuna roll, and 6 piece California roll) and the Jupiter roll. All of the rolls tasted great and the food presentation was beautiful! Much better than most full fledge restaurants. The service was amazing and personable. The whole experience just blew us away. We wished we went to Big Catch last cause after our anniversary "food crawl" we felt that we started with the best part of our crawl(Big Catch) and we probably should have ended there! I have decided that Big Catch is this little gem of sushi paradise in the small Market on MacLeod. Definitely recommend it to friends and family. Already looking forward to coming back soon and bringing the rest of our family with us.

Two combos: spicy and veggie
Stephanie M.

What a wonderful surprise! Big Catch Sushi is located in the Market on MacLeod. Given the market is slightly run down, this is not a place you would expect to get good seafood. Well, I was wrong. Big Catch not only serves up delicious seafood freshly prepared, but it's presented beautifully like a work of art. You can really tell that they take pride in their food. On this first visit I shared two combos: the veggie and the spicy. A combo comes with three rolls of six pieces each for less than $15. Each off the rolls was perfectly sized, tightly wrapped and stuffed full of seafood and/or avocado. On the platter, the sushi rolls were served with amble ginger, wasabi and extra sauce dots flavoured with herbs, turmeric and spice. With the market closing in October, 2018, Big Catch does have to move. Fortunately, they are in the process of securing a new space. I'm looking forward to being able to visit them again in a new space with (hopefully) longer service hours.

The real deal. This is very authentic, and reasonably priced. They season their rice with red vinegar - which tells you EVERYTHING!

Seated promptly - there are only four seats for the omakaze experience. You have a view of all the preparation of the food - sat right in front of the charcoal grill which emanated heat through the glass. The starts of the experience - the Hokkaido scallop and the chicken ass (only available on the omakaze experience and cannot be ordered in the regular dining room now). Never felt rushed, unlimited sides. Only thing that could be improved is difficulty hearing the server and chef over the background music and restaurant noise. Also some of the background music didn't seem to suit the environment (pretty sure I heard some Dr Dre!!)

Shokunin had a fun vibe upon entering. The staff were friendly and knew the menu. I thought food was a bit underwhelming. Nigiri were decent - some tasted better than others. Yakitori took a long time to make and were salty. Kale salad was the most disappointing bc I was told that it's refreshing and a fan favorite. The dressing was creamy and heavy, and the kale were whole bunches and not chopped up for ease of eating. Cocktail was also very mid and I had no desire to order a second one.

The interior of the restaurant has seen better days and they will be undergoing a major renovation from September 21st to 2025. The owner, Jay, was pleasant and attentive. He brought us a plate of complimentary spring rolls with sweet chili sauce. They were piping hot and super crunchy! Our family ordered three personal hot pots to warm us up on a cool autumn afternoon: spicy miso soup with lamb; Tom Yum soup with seafood; kimchi soup with beef. Our soups arrived in a timely fashion on top of individual burners (this was my first time seeing pink gel used as fuel) and they were intensely flavourful. My lamb was tender and the fish cakes, crab sticks, tofu, enoki/brown mushrooms, suey choy, and konjac vermicelli were deliciously satisfying and comforting. As usual, the boys and I had a taste of all three soup bases, and we decided that we liked them all! Just one thing of note: the soup tends to thicken halfway through your meal, so you might need to add a bit of hot water. We will certainly be back!
