Stumbled into Big Bitt by accident, but glad we did. Very friendly staff. The sandwiches were delicious!

Lovely restaurant located right along the Bergen waterfront!…read more Zupperia offers a wide array of dishes. Everything from seafood, to reindeer soup, to curries. There is something for everyone. I had the teriyaki salmon and it was some of the best salmon I've ever had. The Japanese BBQ sauce paired fantastically with the fish, and the veggies and rice were just as yummy. The fish was cooked perfectly for my taste (a little on the moister side), and the dish was actually fairly large and plenty filling. Service was great. Our waitress was super friendly, knowledgeable of the menu, and spoke great English. Prices were very fair by Norwegian & Bergen standards. My meal was just over $20, the total bill for two people was around $60. If I had spent more time in Bergen I definitely would've come back to try another one of their dishes.

Also, when the water jugs ran out of water, the server would quickly replenish the jugs without asking while leaving our water jugs empty when we had finished our water!! Now, onto the food ... we both ordered open-faced sandwiches (Skagen and Fjords). Both sandwiches have bread that takes a strong muscle to cut through and the seafood was swimming in mayo!!! Overall, the experience was not that great plus it is not easy to climb up several steep steps of stairway to get to a restaurant! We can tell that this is a popular restaurant around the locals as it was filling up after 20 minutes, but will we come back here again? Not really!!

However, the restaurant lived up to its hype. The restaurant is romantic and loaded with European ambiance. This is the kind of place where you know you aren't in Kansas anymore. Lamb is something that I love, so I was happy to see it on the menu. It was incredibly good. Not gamy at all, wonderful cooked, flavorful, and tender. It was fantastic. My wife and I split the huge portion of excellent potatoes au gratin that came with my lamb. It was creamy and tasty. Norwegians LOVE potatoes, so some sort of potato dish is a requirement, I think. My wife had a vegetarian hamburger that came with fries and veggies. She said that it lacked flavor, but it looked good. The fries were excellent.

I mean, I did, which is why after a day of traveling to Bergen from Oslo, I desperately needed sustenance and Bryggeloftet & Stuene was on my list and near my hotel. I walked in on a Tuesday night and no, I was denied. The place was packed, but the friendly hostess took my name down for a reservation for the following day. So that's what to do here. Make a reservation if you can't get in because everyone wants to eat here. The following day during my reserved time, it was a much more satisfying experience since I ate here! The restaurant is located just across the pier and along Bryggen, and inside, it's decorated with old paintings and photos of Bergen and Norway with classic, wood furnishings all around. It takes you back to Bergen's former days, which is the charm of this place. Staff could not have been friendlier. Bryggeloftet & Stuene has traditional, Norwegian food. I ordered the wolffish, which was in season, and the fish came with veggies and a side of potatoes to however you want them made. And this is when I learned that the area prepares potatoes dauphinoise, which is like au gratin and was sooo delicious. My dish comprised of fresh wolffish in a lemon, dill sauce, fresh vegetables and of course, with the side of dauphinoise potatoes. But this is the kind of restaurant that no matter what you order, everything will be delicious here. Ya gotta eat at Bryggeloftet & Stuene when in Bergen.

Work brings me to Bergen from time to time and I've had the good fortune to dine at Colonialen twice. Once with two good friends and another time simply by myself. A restaurant has to be amazing to get me to sit alone for 3.5 hours to go through all the courses. The food here is imaginative and consistent. The wine pairings are spot-on. Listing the 20 or so dishes I've eaten there would take forever, so I'll stick with two or three of the standouts. The first was a group of northern grains served in a mortar with a pestle. You ground up the grains with the pestle and an oxtail consomme was poured over top. This was painfully delicious. It was so good that I shamelessly begged (and received) a second. On my second visit, the staff recognized me and gave me a lot of attention (which was nice since I was alone). I had long conversations with the chef and the sommalier about how they sourced their food and selected their wines. Their wine pairings are eclectic (france, germany, italy, pacific northwest, even a Norwegian selection worked its way in). If you are in Bergen or traveling to Bergen, this needs to be on your list ... perhaps more than anything else in town.

It feels like a mom and pop shop still which is great to see but honestly, the food was just decent. We got the waffle with strawberries and it was OK. It was a floppy waffle, which might just be how waffles are done in Norway and the flavors were decent. It was highly rated across platforms so maybe we were going in with higher expectations but I am not sure why it was rated so high. It is fine and maybe a spot for drinks, but not a place I'd say you'd have to visit. One of the top things we wanted to try on our Norway trip was Norwegian brown cheese on the waffle for 59 kr. The taste was interesting but not anything to rave about. The waffle was already made as you can see in the bakery case. They just reheat it in a microwave and put the cheese slices on. The brown cheese itself tasted like a mildy salty cheese with mild cheese flavor. The waffle was thin and soft with a hint of sweetness. The workers were friendly and offered us free tap water.
