YES! I DO recommend this place! I tried a different vet out in Seffner, it was so filthy I was disgusted! It was horrific! This place is so clean and nice! The AC works and keeps not only myself cool but my pup cooled off as well. That's important to me especially on hot days that we have here in Florida. They're usually pretty quick at getting your special baby in for an appointment. I feel they do care about your pets health and care. Not just about the money. It was a sad day on march 30 when i had to take my best friend of 14 years in to be laid to eternal peace....my heart was breaking....i was hurting....but the staff went out of their way to get me in as a walk in..no appointment...and they made the process much easier than i expected....i miss my little buddy but i know he was given the respect and dignity he deserved....i stayed with him till the end just like he showed me 100 % loyalty over the past 14 years Thank you.....youre kindness means the world to me read more

Would give 0 starts if possible. Moved to the area during COVID and was looking for a new vet for our two dogs. Made an appointment with this office and had a terrible experience. We have two mixed breed large rescues who just needed basic vaccinations to go to the groomers. I called and made an appointment for a Saturday at 8am with this office. Spoke to a lady and made this appointment three weeks in advance. The morning of our appointment we get there at 7:50. Slightly early and we walk the dogs around to wear off some excitement outside. Someone from their staff FINALLY showed up around 8:30am. 30 minutes after our appointment time. I hand her the current records we have since our dogs are new patients and that takes another 10 minutes for them to input. They come back outside to tell us it would be $315 EACH for our dogs that day. $630!!! I laughed and we left there. How insane. We ended up making appointments for the humane society and got our dogs updated on their shots, nails trimmed, and extra services for $100 each. $215 after tax there. I'm not sure why or how this place is in business given how rude they were, expensive and not even on time for their first appointment of the freaking day. read more

So everyone wonders if the animal hospital does the right thing because animals cannot talk. So we are hesitant. I was pleasantly surprised they do not up sale you like a used car salesperson. They do the best for the health of the animal in my case a dog. We have also used the boarding facility. They genuinely care like its their own dog. You will not be disappointed. read more

I brought my bird in for a wing trim Bc they said they had a vet that knew what she was doing . She even came out to discuss the trim with me first. I dudnt look closely until the next day Bc I didn't want to further aggravate my baby. She trimmed ALL THE FEATHERS, not just the right feathers the whole wing BADLY. A simple google search would have informed her that this was wrong. My bird is fine,she's not hurt at all but she can't even glide safely, just sinks like a stone and will for quite some time. I will at least give 2 stars Bc the staff was very nice. Proper wing trim, number two being the trim we discussed vs what we got Update: been several months and still dealing with this issue. No stars. I called last week, they said they could get me in the following Monday. I was super stoked because I was with a vet that had me for 15 years and she, God Bless, retired, so I was on my hunt for a new vet, and had been presented with a beautiful husky rescue, but needed to double check in with her possible current care and help by to potentially identify the owner thru micro. I rescue regularly and need a wonderful, caring and accommodating ( I understand that not all vets are available or even equipped for er situations or even last minute new patients, however...... ) I called ahead, about 30 min before the visit was scheduled, 12:00 noon, and informed that we were running 'a smidge late' her words exactly, 'what exactly is a smidge?' I said 5-10 minutes, maybe sooner....just depends on the traffic, she said fine,, thank you. I arrived at exactly 12:16 pm and the young woman at the front desk almost knew exactly who I was and was anticipating my arrival, in which I immediately said, 'I am so sorry for being late, I am the one who called about 10 min ago, in which she replied "I have been here all day and never received a call regarding this"....so, your appointment was 16 min ago so we will have to reschedule. My immediate response was, I just called you like less than 10 min ago and you said nothing about a reschedule after a certain amount of time, because I would have re-evaluated my drive time and just rescheduled at that time. I was referred by a very good rescue friend of mine and that is why I was so excited to switch over my 7 dogs and multiple other rescue animals to your practice after my long time veterinary practice closed, but I guess I will just keep looking. DO NOT use BIG BEND Animal hospital we took our dog Bailey there and they stated he needed his teeth cleaned - well before they would clean his teeth - they wanted him to have updated vaccinations. He received 2 vaccines on last wednesday. I came home thursday from my business trip and my husband said Bailey isn't eating. He had called the vet yesterday and they said sometimes vaccines makes dogs tired. I got him to eat some chicken breast but he wasn't acting like himself and was breathing weird. In a few hours, the chicken came up. We both took him back to Dr. Holder on Friday morning. She said maybe he is having a reaction to the vaccines and gave him a steroid shot and a shot of benadryl. By that afternoon, I noticed he was now pooping blood (he could have done it the night or two before but I had just gotten home) - I took him back. This time they took blood and examined the stool. Supposedly he had pancreatitis from the stool and the blood work was enough to send off to pathology. I asked her again about his weird breathing and she had no explanation. She gave him an antibiotic to take home. Saturday morning Bailey died. :( :( :( Now she called me today and said pathology still didn't have great idea of what it could be but it could be chronic inflammation. I straight up told her that he was fine until he was vaccinated by you. Then he wouldn't eat (a dog who LOVED to eat), started pooping blood and started having breathing issues. We saw her two more times after that and nothing. In my heart and eyes - she killed my young (7 years old) Cavalier King Charles Spaniel - my little Bailey. I even told her I will never ever bring any of my animals to that place again. Be aware read more

Boarded dog at Big Bend Animal Hospital for the weekend. Picked up dog on Monday and was surprised at what I saw. Took my dog for a quick walk before putting him in the car. Dog's pee was very yellow, dog urinated for a very long time and was extremely thirsty. When we got home, which was 3 minutes away, the dog drank a bowl and a half of water. Very little physical activity provided. Area where employees walk dogs is never picked up after the animals do their thing . It is very difficult to walk around. Never again am I going here nor am i recommending this place. read more

we started coming here 6 months ago when we came back to St. Louis. they were wonderful with my 7 yr old lab and explained everything to me thoroughly. Just recently had to put my dog through surgery, and dr hooks and the staff were so amazing to work with. They kept me updated on her progress throughout the day before I picked her up and were very accommodating to my dogs needs. the staff here was great! they are always available for questions and keep my mind at ease. Money Hungry Vet, cares very little about your pet. My cocker spaniel had an appointment, vet said she had allergies. Ask for a prescription to buy the meds cheaper somewhere else. They want $30.00 to write three scripts on top of the office visit fee. We've been to quite a few vets and never have we been charged for writing a script. So if you can't afford their medicine, to bad for your pet. CASH before CARE. STAY AWAY. Go to Boyette Animal Care, much better service. read more

I called Big Bend Vet Clinic on a whim one Saturday around 12:30 because my dog had a bad ear infection and I knew I needed to get her in ASAP. They were 30 minutes from closing time, but promised to see her if I got there by 1. I got there at 1:05 and they welcomed me with open arms, loving on both of my pups from the start. They were very kind. And Dr. Hook was incredibly sweet and patient -- and unlike many vets, I didn't get the sense that he was trying to milk money out of me. He was informative and helpful. They aren't pricey and I could tell that they truly loved animals. Their office is small and simple, not fancy, but what matters is the people who work there. I will be taking my dogs here from now on. read more

My dog had an ear infection two weeks and we brought him here. This week I brought the dog in for grooming and asked if they could look into his ear to make sure he was ok. $44 (in addition to the grooming fee) when I picked him up. Pretty steep for a quick follow up of just looking in his ear. I told them I thought that was a high charge, but they didn't care. I was expressed by the short wait 2weeks ago when I brought my kitty in for a n emergency checkup, she was not eating, puking 4x a day and not going to the bathroom...but they said they did xrays and there was no blockage...she was slightly dehydrated and only had an upset stomach... It has been two weeks now and kitty still hasn't improved...taking her to another emergency hospital....she is drinking water but still not eating or pooping... I spent nearly $500 at this vet. I took my new husky pup here and I think this will be my new vet. I have a small shipoo puppy and I had a wonderful experience. I made an appointment for shots and general check up and they were beyond professional and friendly. The staff is great, very relaxed atmosphere, and the first appointment is 50% off. We've gone back for a neuter and everything went wonderfully, my pups seem to like it here, I think we'll stay a while. read more

I come to this place to have my dog laid to rest and after they charge me 400 dollars they call me up days later with a woman that can't speak (American English) to tell me that they want to charge an additional 16 dollars for my dogs name on the urn... When I moved to StL I needed a vet and my best friend referred me to Big Bend. I have been very pleased with the veterinarians. I have two Dachshunds and Dr. Hook is very knowledgable of their conditions and takes time to explain them to me. The office staff is very friendly and extremely helpful. They have always been able to accommodate me when I am in need of an urgent appointment. I use to live in the city but have since moved to the county. I've been meaning to review Dr. Hooks and his staff for years, as I have had wonderful experience bringing in previous foster dogs, as well as dogs I have found running around Maplewood to scan their microchips/find their owners, along with my own personal pets. I currently live out of state but come home frequently, and when my then-six month old shepard mix got into some sort of poison at my mom's (we still don't know what it was), Dr. Hooks and his staff promptly took us in emergently and began treatment right away, updating me throughout the day. By the evening, Ellie was back to her usual bouncing around puppy self and was able to come home. I couldn't have asked for better care for her and highly, highly recommend this vet and will continue to utilize them any time I'm back home. read more

STAY AWAY FROM THIS VET!! My girlfriend was quoted a price for spaying her dog.... I was quoted the same price 3 weeks later. $329 for up to A 30lb dog. This price as told to us both times was ALL INCLUSIVE. When my girlfriend picked up her dog after the surgery there was a $50 mystery fee added to the bill. They had 3 different chances before the surgery and when my girlfriend picked her dog up. The fee was never explained. It turned out it was a $50 fee for the first office visit??? The dog had been there previously when my GF got the first estimate. Why wasn't this fee explained when my GF picked up the dog? Why wasn't this fee described when we made the appointment? Why wasn't this fee explained when we dropped the dog off for the surgery? This borders on fraud. At the very least this is an unscrupulous practice. I wouldn't buy a cup of coffee from these frauds. I'm taking my dog to Ruskin from here on out. read more

I've been taking my pets here for over 10 years now. It's a quaint little clinic and everyone here is super helpful, kind, and you can tell how much they care about the well-being of your animals. My German Shepard mix has epilepsy and they've been so kind helping me and my family deal with his seizures and now he hasn't had one for over 8 months!! My childhood standard poodle came here his whole life and when we went on our annual summer vacation we left him in the capable and loving hands of the people at Big bend Vet Clinic. They called us a week into our vacation saying his condition had worsened and he was dying an asked if they could put him on a morphine drip and let him go quietly. We acquiesced and me, having to deal with the death of my childhood dog asked if I could talk to him. They held the phone to his ear and let me talk to him for about 45 minutes. It was heartbreaking but so caring on their part to let me make my peace with Fluffy since I couldn't be by his side. Needless to say, I wouldn't take my pets anywhere else. We tried other vets before we found Big bend Vet and nothing has ever compared to the love and care with which they treat all their patients (even my sometimes grumpy and temperamental Shepard mix) read more

My review is soley based on the grooming aspect of this company. My mother took her half black golden retriever half lab in for grooming and they had shaven him down to the skin. This was in the middle of winter. She requested upon arrival that he needed a shampoo and a JUST A TRIM. They kept him for 8 hours on top of this. When she expressed her opinion to why he was shaven down to the skin she was given a response by the receptionist of "Oh it will grow back". My point is that her request for the visit was for a bath and a trim..NOT a bath and a complete shave of all his hair. ( keep in mind this is Dec and very cold). After not getting what she requested she was charged over $90. Well...It is now April and guess what? His hair in several spots NEVER grew back. I have pictures of before and after. I truly believe they may have accidentally used a wrong product on her dog and shaved him to cover this up. This is UNACCEPTABLE! We have no experience in the clinic aspect of the company but as far as the grooming i say DON'T USE THEM. I believe they are a danger and did something to my mothers dog and covered it up. read more

I love love LOVE Dr. Hooks. We have been taking our fur babies here for about 3.5 years. We recently came into owning a micro mini pig and Dr. Hooks even cares of her. When he was in vet school he did a whole rotation on swine (convenient). One of our babies had necrosis of his femur head, Dr. Hooks did about a million tests and figured out what was wrong with him. Thank goodness, b/c he was very close to dying. I know Dr. Hooks saved my baby's life. He is always available for questions and concerns, and never makes you feel like you are putting him out. We will continue to take our fur babies here for life. read more

Started taking my rescue dog here after I got her last May. They are so sweet and accommodating! My dog ate an entire bag of chocolates and they stayed on the phone with me to talk me through what to do. You can clearly tell that they care a lot! Dr. Hooks is so great and kind. He took a chunk of time out of his day to talk to me on the phone about which Flea and Tick medicine to give her once she reacted to the first stuff. He even did the order and everything himself. This is the BEST clinic for animals. It is run on a small town feel to it just like all of maplewood/ Richmond heights area. Dr. Hooks is so nice but the support staff can not be beat. I took my dog in for grooming and a bath. They ended up shaving off all of her fur! I had told the groomer that I wanted to get her TRIMMED up. She asked how many inches, like one inch, etc.? I said about two to 3 inches. I then told her to please get rid of all the excess hair and proceeded to show her where: her toes, around her thighs/back area, tail, plus sides, front and back of her head. She said you want that all off, I then said yes please take it all off, I want all the excess hair off. The thing is I also demonstrated with my fingers how much (2-3 inches). She then said that it might look extreme, but I didn't catch that. I only said well she's had her TRIM like that before so she should look good. My son had gone to pick her up and alerted me the groomer had shaved it all off. I then called in since I was working to see why they had done this. At the time the receptionist stated she didn't know why and would speak with the groomer. The weird thing is when I called the next day to follow up the same receptionist insisted that I said to 'shave it all off'. She said that the groomer had asked her if she heard the same thing and she said yes I heard her say it 3 times??? How did the receptionist suddenly remember that she heard me state 'shave it all off'? She then slipped and states well you said 'to take all the hair off'. I said that's right but I showed her where I wanted it off and repeatedly stated TRIM not SHAVE! At the same time I noted her voice was escalating so I also found my voice escalating as well. I decided to call back instead the next day and speak with the manager. The manager was surprised to hear about my complaint and stated she needed to speak with the groomer. She said she'd get back to me and as I was still talking she hung up on me. I had thought she would be more professional and get my phone number and name, but in thinking about it I'm pretty sure she had to have heard of this complaint if she didn't even bother to gather my information. That was 21 days ago and no one from that office has ever called me back, especially the groomer. What's really offensive in all this is the lack of customer service, professionalism and integrity to go the distance for a brand NEW customer. This was the most appalling offense of all. They never offered a refund or anything to fix this. I wonder if the vet (Dr.) knows this goes on in her office? read more

Dr. Hooks and the (completely lovely) Assistants at Big Bend Veterinary Clinic have taken wonderful care of my dogs over the past 10 years. Following my 5 year old pup's recent illness, ultrasound, surgery, biopsy, long recovery, and worst-case-scenario diagnosis, they have now taken wonderful care of me, too. During the entire terrifying process, I was fully informed at every stage, all of my many questions were answered (even when I stopped by in tears), and my views and decisions regarding treatment were respected. They go above and beyond in a way that is difficult to describe, easy to appreciate, and hard to find anywhere else. read more
