They are a smaller sports shop filled to the gills with inventory. The price points are a bit cheaper than the big box shops. They have athletic shoes; tennis, pickle ball, running; swim, soccer, baseball, football, and basketball gear; fishing gear; camping gear; kayaks; frisbees; sunglasses; free weights; skateboards; bikes; scooters; exercise bikes; fitness equipment; and athletic wear. You can even buy a fishing license here. Customer service has been great. I like that they rotate seasonal inventory. In the warmer months, they have a larger selection of lawn chairs, swim toys, life vests, goggles, and swimwear. In the colder months, they have snow pants and jackets, thermals, and sleds. I recently bought snow pants on sale for $35 and fleece lined casual pants on sale $25 and I used a $ 10 off coupon. The pants aren't brand name, nothing fancy but does the job. It took them 3 whole minutes to realize that they had customers in the store and only 1 person greeted us. Then after that, they all went back to gossiping at the front of the store. Walked right out. I can see that Big 5 doesn't seem to want to stay in business. DSG already beats them with most things. Convenient sporting goods store I usually just come here and tag along with the hubby when he needs to get running shoes or other things he needs for his refereeing stuff for youth football. We normally come here when there's a sale. The stores are cramped but items on sale are always at a decent price level. Everything in the store is usually affordable and service is pretty good. This is our first time back in the store during covid times. There is a huge display sign a few feet from their front door stating that customers must wear a mask or they are not allowed to enter the store (or something to that effect). wow, geez... did not need my glasses to see that one. Was looking for youth under armour hoodie for my nephew for Christmas and didn't want to drive all the way to Folsom outlets. Walked in and was not greeted by the 2 girls at the counter or acknowledged. Three guys in the shoe dept we're BS-ing about sports amongst themselves. I circled the whole store trying to find the youth section. Store is very packed in. No way could a wheelchair fit through there. Finally Found one for $40. You ought to be nuts. I've been coming here for many years. I generally purchase my running shoes, various sports equipment and workout clothing here. I'm usually able to save money there when I shop. I buy when they have sales and I use there coupons too for additional savings. This week I purchased my running shoes, using a $10 coupon. Better shoes for about the price of average shoes. My only complaint would be that it can be somewhat difficult to find shoes in my size and they tend to carry shoes for extra wide feet. I like this store, except Allison. She's a supervisor or something and acts so demeaning to the other employees--gag. I had the nicest cashier one day and we were talking and laughing while she was ringing me up. Allison walked right up, interrupted, and snapped at the cashier, "I'll take over, go back over there!" Like she's not allowed to smile and be friendly with customers. I wanted to say something, but I was afraid to make it worse for the poor cashier. I came back to return something from my purchase a week later. We asked Allison if we could do a return at the register she was at and she turned to another cashier and gave her the evil eye until she came over and did the return for her. Really? Went here yesterday to pick up some snow pants for a last minute planned snow day. They had my older son's size, but not my little guy. At checkout, Louie looked up the snow pants we wanted, but they were out of stock. He told us which Big 5's in our area had them. He even gave me a coupon to use for my purchase and told me I could take it with me to use when I buy my little guy's snow pants. Louie was very professional and even more importantly, personable. I took my son in for basketball shoes. From the time we walked in to the time we walked out I felt the employees went above and beyond. When we first walked back to the shoes, they immediately pulled a couple of my sons sizes that may have not been displayed. When he didn't like either of those they pulled more, he was trying to figure out which had the best traction. The salesman even talked him through his anxiety about picking the wrong shoes. The gentleman who checked us out was courteous and very polite. In the end we walked out with a nice pair of shoes at an excellent price. read more

Ya know today when I was in the store shopping and bought a bunch of stuff from your store and had to go potty I was told I could walk way over in the parking lot and use Raley's bathroom....so nice of BIG5 to tell me to take a hike to pee and buy from them but use Raley's bathroom. I always surprise myself by having decent expectations when I walk into a Big 5 and then walk out, annoyed and promising to never return. This time, I may stick to my word. I went to return a pair of shoes, with receipt in hand, and the young lady at the register gave me all sorts of attitude. She suggested that I not get the soles of the shoes dirty next time, so that they could resell them and didn't even look up when she handed me my receipt. Honestly, it wasn't what she said, but how she said it, which was in a condescending and irritated tone. I realize that she only makes minimum wage, but she doesn't need to take her frustrations out on me. read more

I am not sure if I went in on an off day but it seemed that all of the workers were lost and confused. It was pretty dead in the whole store and I came in to return a pair of boots but the transaction didn't go smooth at all. I had to ask multiple employees for sizes on boots because every time I would ask an employee they would never come back. The strangest thing! I ended up finding a pair on the floor that I liked that was stacked up on clearance. When I got to the register, although I had my receipt, they couldn't find it in their system. It took literally 30 minutes at the register to process the request. You would think that with the abundance of workers oozing out of that place combined with the lack of customers, that you would get excellent customer service! Guess not! read more

This location always seems understaffed. There have been many times that my husband and I have gone in and sat around for at least 10 minutes not being helped until we left, especially in the firearms area.. That seems like a place where you would have staff on standby, but I guess I wouldn't know... The staff is also usually uninviting in the way that they completely ignore you. Sometimes the cashiers are pretty nice but that's about it in terms of friendly staff. They also never really have much of a selection in terms of merchandise, compared to other stores. I recently bought my husband a bass beer holder as a surprise that he loves but that's about all I have to say that's positive. I went to Big5 to buy some binoculars but after the unfriendly service I got I didn't buy any & I won't be going back there again. I know almost nothing about binoculars so I asked the girl behind the counter about the 'specs' of their selection of binoculars and she said, "what specs?'. Her tone & her facial expression were unfriendly. I replied with what little information I have on binoculars. And then she explained to me how they are classified. I tried to clarify what she told me and she responded and looked at me as if I were stupid. She then pointed out 2 brands and when I asked her about the two classes of measurement which she had previously explained she responded with this look of indifference as if I didn't say the right thing. At this point I felt too uncomfortable to ask any more questions. I walked out the door and that was the end of that. At my job I work with the public and I treat people the way I wish to be treated. If people don't shop at my store I'll be out of business. That's why I greet people with a smile and show a willingness to help apart from the fact I like people. This girl didn't smile. My bf and I came in yesterday around 2-3pm. There was a young male and two females working there during the time. The male was nice and helpful but then we came to the register and that's when the problems started. We ended up buying roller skates and other out door items and upon further notice, we saw the skates were in dirt and had asked if they were on clearance because of this. The pretty girl working up front had said no and proceeded to check out. I then noticed she included and item that we didn't put up on the register. Prior to this she said that there are no returns until the end of May 31st believe. I looked at her and said we never bought this. She then called her manager and said, " I accidentally charged them for an item and need to do a return with a manager" She knew that item was at the front and knew someone left it behind and accidentally scanned it with our transaction. The manager had 4 other customers that we had to wait for and I was getting impatient at this time and asked her if she could do the return because this is alittle ridiculous. She said she couldn't and we continued To wait only for the manager to finish her transactions and CLOCK OUT knowing we were waiting for her after the girl had called her and let her know. Hmmmm....what can I say? Everytime I stop in it is as a last resort when I have looked at better stores. For example, I stopped in on Saturday night since Fleet Feet was closed to grab some energy gels and one of those runners blankets for before my race this past Sunday. I walked in and was given a lackluster hello. She did ask what I needed and I told her; she then pointed me to their gels - a very weak selection, only 3 flavors of GU to choose from. Then as I told her about the blanket, she says that she has no idea what I am talking about. Wow. Way to work in a sports store. The other associate walked me over to the metalic sweatsuit. No what I asked for, especially when I specified that it is made to be tossed aside. A $20 sweatsuit is not in that category. My GU gels were 25 cents more than at Fleet Feet so that was a dissapointment. Next time I will make sure to go by FF before they close. These guys should get commission, then they might care. My experience wasn't bad but still doesn't deserve any stars, there was simply no effort. I did show up about 20 minutes before close so maybe they were tired but no one seemed to care about their jobs or the store. I asked for assistance finding a ping pong paddle that wasn't on the rack but the cashier said they should have 2 in stock. The man who "looked" for me seemed to be the manager (was performing all the closing duties and appeared to be counting inventory before I asked for assistance) but did nothing more than what I could do myself. He looked at the rack for a short period of time and said "I guess we don't have it". I asked if it might be in the back or in a different part of the store and all I got was a "nope, sorry" then he walked away. Not only was he not helpful but I suppose he alsodoesnt care that there are two $50 items missing? Not to mention I was going to buy one! If they worked on commission not only am I sure would they care more about missing stock but also about the ammount the customer is willing to purchase. Big 5 just lost some money and left me underwhelmed and confused. Maybe I'm just odd because I was an inventory manager in different fields for over 5 years, but they lack of care about missing stock is bizarre to me. read more

I needed some new workout shoes, and I know that Big 5 carries New Balance, which comes in wide sizes. So I went in there on my lunch prepared to buy, the epitome of a roll-over sale, and, just wow, what horrific service. You can't even call it horrific service, because for it to have been horrific, someone would have had to at least acknowledge my existence by spitting on me or something. I was ignored by the young woman at the counter as I came in, ignored repeatedly by the young man working the back as I self-served my way through boxes of shoes stacked in some barely decipherable "system of organization," and then ignored by the young woman at the counter a second time, along with a white-shirted, tie-wearing gentleman who looked very managerial standing with her. How do you let a customer who was trying on shoes walk out without at least saying, "Did you find everything okay?" The store wasn't even busy. There was another lady looking at shoes, and someone at the front counter as I was headed out. Yes, I could have grabbed the kid in the back by the shirt and, perhaps with a shake, asked him to lend a hand, but I refuse. If they have no interest in offering any service whatsoever, I have no interest in explaining it to them. And I certainly have no intent of spending money there. Ever. Worst part, I had the shoes I wanted in my hand, but I didn't buy them on principle. Now I have to find them somewhere else. Grrrrrr! read more

Tried to find some plastic worms for fishing, in March, which is prime bass fishing season, the 'clerk' told me they were 'in the back' and didn't have time to put them out yet. Wha...? I asked if I could at least get a couple bags of Senkos, he didn't know what they were??? LOL!! I picked out some over-priced lures. They had their Rapalas locked up in a glass case like they were some priceless items, wth??
