I was in today and bought a BB gun and I jammed it myself brought the gun back to Big 5 it was also leaking CO2 the manager and a nice gentleman who I did not get the name came out explain to me how to load the gun correctly and that the pin on the inside of the gun is probably why it leakso CO2 make a long story short exchanged for a new gun and took the time is awesome read more

Last minute gifts, guy gifts, and just all around good stuff. Every time I go in this store I'm amazed the vast selection of offerings, I went in for a swim cap, yes they have swimwear 365 days of the year. Of course I was distracted with all the soft, warm fleece wear, cool, stylish leisure wear for everyone, even Juicy Couture. The selection is off the hook, it's very organized, and the prices are so fair. A ton of guy clothing and all the rugged stuff anyone would want. They'll hook you up for every season of the year. There is a plethora of exercise equipment just in time for New Years resolutions and losing that Covid-19 weight gain. As I check out, the clerk asked if I want to be on their email list, I agreed and have been receiving all kind of great offers, enough to lure me back in. I bought a couple warm and cozy oversized fleece jackets just in time for the unseasonably cold Petaluma weather and a bag of hand warmers, a quick fix for cold hands and toes. I was looking for Heelys shoes for a birthday gift. It was a little unorganized in the store. I found the shoes I was looking for displayed on the wall. I couldn't find where the rest of the shoes were. I had to wait for someone who can help me. There were only 1 employee in the shoes department and he was trying to help everyone. Joseph who helped me out was really nice. He looked in the back on what they have and showed me a couple of shoes similar to what I was looking for. Unfortunately non of 'em worked. I've been shopping Big 5 for years. Just recently I went in to update my running shoes , I was greeted at the door by a very cute girl who took me back to footwear. She was patient, and had me try on a few different pairs. After trying on and running around the store I decided on the Nikes. I was really impressed by the level of service I received. I was talking to the Manager in the guns section about the availability of 22 ammo. He informed of a shipment coming in and what time to be there which I thought was pretty cool considering I've been searching for 22 ammo for almost a month and Dicks kept telling me to check back, that its random shipments..Not sure how shipments are "random". But, I finally got my 1k Winchester brick of 22 at the time he told me to come in... except I could only get one box. The Manager was very cool and took the time to answer all my questions about guns and ammo while I waited. The store seemed somewhat busy and for those guys to take that much time with me, It was a great shopping experience. I got on their rewards program and got a discount on my purchase that day. I will be back there for the next ammo shipment. read more

There is good things about Big 5 Sporting Goods but this low rating is for my recent experience with getting work shoes from them. I work between 10 to 12 hour shifts. I was told the shoes I bought would work great however the shoes I bought hurt my feet so bad I could barely stand or walk. I even bought gel insoles hoping they would help & they didn't. I ended up having to buy another pair of shoes from another store. There shoes are NOT meant to walk or stand for long hours at work. read more

I used to really like this store. I'd rather go here than go to Dick's, but my last time there might have changed that. I wanted to get a tent and there was one in particular I was looking at. Unfortunately, there was no price and it wasn't on the list with the rest of them. So we asked for help at the front. They asked over the speakers for a sales person to go to the tents. 5 minutes later, we were still waiting. So we grabbed the tent and went up to the check out counter to see if we could get a price there. Now there was no one at the check out counter. We waited a couple minutes until we finally just walked out. There were not a lot of customers there, so I'm not sure what the del was, but it really doesn't encourage me to go back there. read more

Well I read the two other reviews and all I can say they are spot on! I went in this evening to buy some .223 ammo. It is very hard to come by and expensive at gun shops. They had three types on the shelf. I was waiting for some help for about 5 minutes. I then walked to the cashier but on the way I saw an employee coming to the gun counter(Her name is Liz). I asked for a box of 50 bullets and I asked how much the other two were. She told me $26.99. I then asked if both were the same price. She rolled her eyes back,gave me a dirty look and said"AHH!"and snapped the box off the shelf and scanned it and looked at and said"Like I told you$26.99". WTF is her problem? Like BelleC. stated she tried to make me feel uncomfortable and uneducated!!! But I promise I will contact her main office and let them know what kind of UNEDUCATED and RUDE employee Liz is. Some young folks need to learn how to work. I went into this story today...about 4 employees...but only 2 of them were actually working...while 2 stood around debating Star Wars stuff. I asked where something on sale was, and the young white kid pointed. (Kind of useless) Thank God there was somebody working who actually gave a sh--about customers. My review is mixed, both good and not so good. Big 5 is Big 5. It's the K-Mart of sporting goods stores, so a person needs to be realistic about the inventory and selection they are getting here. If you need super-premium sporting goods, go to REI or The North Face. Dick's down the road is _slightly_ more upscale, and has a bigger selection for a lot of things. Some high-demand things are easier to find here than other Big 5 locations, simply because Petaluma is not a center of commerce. I drove 30 minutes out of my way to this store to get something I couldn't find at the Northgate store. My first experience at the store was with Elizabeth, a charming sales person and assistant manager who spent more than two hours working with me to purchase a technical product. I spent a good bit of money, so it was time well spent on her part. Throughout the discussion, I felt that she was knowledgeable and very patiently answered my questions. I left very pleased with my purchase. I left the store thinking they should put Elizabeth in charge. However, on my next visit, I had a somewhat less excellent visit with other clerks. I stood at the counter for a good 5 minutes with a book of customer names, home addresses, phone numbers, and other sensitive information was open and unattended on the counter right in front of me. Not cool. They really need to respect their customer's privacy much more than that. I've interacted with John, whom other reviews have complained about, and he was OK. Not great, but good enough. He was very business like and moved the transaction along, which is fine. He seems to be the go-to guy for questions the sales people can't answer. The other clerks I worked with on my second visit were just OK too. Some training on how to handle customers would go a long way for all of them. Just spend an afternoon at Nordstrom's in the city, guys, and see how they do it. It doesn't cost anything to treat customers like they are important (News flash: Your job depends on customers: They ARE important). It seems like they just don't understand that in the sporting goods business, customer service is a really big deal, and paying a little more to get employees who can consistently give exceptional service would net them a lot more money than it costs. It would also be more fun for everyone, including the employees and customers, and be easier to manage. read more

Terrible experience trying to return something there purchased the day before with receipt in hand. One of the clerks, Renada, was polite and service oriented; however, the other young woman, who refused to give me her name, and Nick the store manager were unable to understand standard math in reference to the use of their own discount coupon and rather than trying to hear me decided to default to belittling the customer. This was a perfect scenario of what NOT to do when a customer has a complaint. Really bad management and no training clearly! read more

Definitely Sorry to hear about the horrible experiences at this location. As an employee i do know that day in and day out our #1 goal is to help customers feel welcomed and informed. Customer service should always come first. We strive every day to meet our requirements as employees as well as assist with any buying process. We do train our staff on product knowledge. The horrible reviews are hard for me to see, especially when most of us practicly live at the store due to scheduling and full time hours as a manager. And to address the price issue for some people, we have sales that are activated and come out on a weekly basis, its hard to come in and find something that has never been on sale or that isnt on sale currently. If you need a coupon, or would like to save $, collect the coupons that our company provides and utilize them to your advantage. I was taken aback when I walked into the store and there in the front IN A GREAT BIG DISPLAY were "Casa Grande Goucho Country" shirts and NOWHERE in the store was there anything for Petaluma High School, not even purple tshirts. VERY unhappy with this store! Manager Corrine would NOT return my 2 folding chairs bought last year, 1 of which broke, and, caused a friend of mine to collapse inside the chair, and, was trapped on the ground. It could have been horrible, if I was not there to pick her up, out of the failed chair, made in CHINA. NO mention of a swap, and, complete denial of any money back. In this day and age of being flexible with returns, I give BIG 5 a minus 5 stars. I am a retired retail manager, with 25 years experience. At some point, one realizes KEEPING your customers is MORE important than losing a few dollars on a return! This "old fashioned" BIG 5 way of "sorry, no reciept, no return" will only send people like me to DICK's SPORTING GOODS in Petaluma. Compared to Dick's this place will not seem impressive but I have bought some great New Balance shoes from Big 5. Moreover, my father and I got our first shotgun there for a ridiculous deal. The staff had no idea what to do in the fitness department. The person who helped me was nice but speaking with him he told me they only get a slight training in shoes and nothing else so I understand. I spoke to the store manager and he tried to Help but sounded like an idiot BS'ing that he knew about fitness. He was extremely rude and I can't believe he is a store Manager he should be fired! So staff is nice but have no clue about anything but shoes and the store manager is an A-hole. I will go to dicks or drive to sports authority before going back to this place ever again! read more

staff is horrible. had a younger woman, shoulder length blonde hair, braces maybe?? helping us and was speechless of her attitude. she would be fired on the spot if i employeed her. making customers feel uncomfortable and uneducated isn't what i would expect from a sporting goods store. you should know working at one, you're going to be asked questions and are going to be asked to see/test the merchandise. wasnt me first bad experience there either.
