I have shopped frequently at Big 5 stores, mostly near my home, often for shoes and socks, so when I was passing through Palm Springs, I stopped when I saw one that was new to me. Spotted some great shoes, but they did not my size. As I was leaving, a staffer, perhaps a manager, asked if I needed help and I told her why I was empty handed. She asked me to wait while she double checked in back, came up empty as well, but told me that a new store shipment was due in couple of days, and that I should come in early, as they stock the new items before they open. My review here is completely because I appreciate service, especially from a person whose job it is to be of service. Too often, that is not the case. read more

Recently purchased "work" boots. Yes they were low priced, but labeled work boots. I wore them for about one and a half months before the bottom fell out. Took them back to return them and discuss a possible credit, refund or getting a different shoe, and the person helping me sat there blank faced before saying it looked like they had been worn a good amount. Huh?! A month and a half. Then said its not a "work" workbook, just a light work boot (standing around not working boots i guess). I asked to speak to the manager, but she said she was the manager and nothing could be done. Most things i get from Big 5 are good, but several brands of boots however just fall apart. read more

I bought a $100 pair of Wolverine hiking boots at Big 5 in LA Quinta CA. They started making a loud squeak each step and the trim started peeling off after 2 months. I brought them back in the box with the receipt. They didn't even look at the boots. Just told me they don't return items after one month. I wanted a credit to buy another pair of boots, no luck. Just take my broken 2 month old boots and leave. Be careful. I will pay more to shop at a business that values customers. read more

I have shopped at this Big 5 before. My Dad used to take me to a Big 5 in LA so it's a favorite of mine. This year, I was purchasing some Christmas gifts and I was pretty distraught. My dog, a goldendoodle, was diagnosed with cancer a couple of months ago and I have been beyond sad to the point where my friends and family have been concerned & I've lost 50 pounds. When I was shopping at Big 5, I was so impressed and comforted by the extremely friendly, helpful, patient and professional experience I had with the employees. These people are SO nice! You can go to a bigger store, but Big 5 is a big company and the service is worth well over 5 stars. And they are so personal and willing to help. If you haven't been there yet, give them a try. They never have a manager on duty to sell ammo??? So this store runs with no manager at times, VERY hard to believe. If that's the case they should state the times the manager will be there for ammo sales. I mean unbelievably poorly managed store. read more

I recently had to return one of two items I purchased the prior week. The manager of the store, Sandra, refunded the amount charged, but I had a question relating to the other item that did not the additional $2.50 to the prior charge (I had a $5 credit..only $2.50 was credited). Sandra was quite dismissive of my concern and stated that if I didn't like her decision, not to shop again at Big5. Basically, she was not concerned if I remain a loyal customer or not of Big 5. Although I like to patronize local brick and mortar stores because of good customer service, the lack of good customer service and poor attitude at this store persuades me to shop elsewhere or online where I can get better customer service as I recently experienced with Amazon...and I did not even have to leave my home. read more

I love going into this store. It's a small store with pretty much everything geared towards your sporting activity. The prices are discounted for a lot of the clothing and shoes are previous year styles. The staff is small but they are very helpful. However for the prices you pay that's to be expected these days. Thanks for the great service when I came in yesterday to exchange the New Balance 608's! I went in last week to get a new pair and, naturally, picked up a medium wide instead of wide! Put them on at home and realized what I did immediately! I walked into the store with my box and the associate, (I believe his name is Adrian according to the receipt) at the counter immediately said hello and asked if I had a return. I said exchange and he came out from behind the counter, walked me to the shoe section, checked the boxes on the floor, went to the stockroom and returned with the right size. I had a pillow that needed to be inflated. I tried to inflate it by mouth, but couldn't because of a valve stopping the air from entering. I began going to places I knew would have bicycle pumps but did not receive much help or advice and only had salespeople trying to up-sell me fancier bicycle pumps when all I needed was something simple with the right-sized nozzle. Finally, I went to Big 5 and asked Alvaro, who was at the counter, for assistance. He not only found exactly what I needed, but discussed the merits, advantages, and disadvantages of each possible product, helped me test the pump and nozzles we found, and was pleasant and cheerful throughout this helpful transaction. I can't say enough about his good humor and willingness to do whatever it took to achieve customer satisfaction. Big 5 is a good store for all sorts of things, and Alvaro was an excellent representative of the company's customer service policy. I will be back for all my sporting goods needs. read more

Big Five goes from 10 for Customer service at the Palm Desert store to Zero at the La Quinta store. I wanted a pair of shoes, not available at Palm Desert but manager called La Quinta store and found shoes. When I arrived I found shoes but cashier refused to honor coupon, and started arguing and providing worse customer service I have ever received at Big Five.
