First time coming into this store, honestly didn't even know it was here. I happen to be working in Davis yesterday and saw it out of the corner of my eye. Perfect because I'm getting ready to go camping soon and needed a few items. This store was great. Not too busy , staff was nice , helpful and not pushy at all. Great selection of items. Everytime I come to this location to get ammo they don't have someone qualified to sell it. Today I called to save my gas and time, the person who answered the phone said there was a qualified manager in store. When I get there I waited about 10mins for the manager who was helping someone else just for him to say he's not qualified to sell ammo. When I mentioned that I called he asked when I called I said about 15mins ago, before I drove over and all he said was welp that's not my fault. Wasted my time again read more

So I love Big 5 one day deals. If you're not subscribed, I suggest you do. You can find some good deals at Big 5 through the one day deal. My biggest issue with Big 5 has to do with their ammunition. They had a great one day deal involving .22 ammunition. I got to the Davis store at 9:30 right when they opened to take advantage of this deal because ammunition tends to run out. I was the first customer. I immediately ask to purchase ammo just to be told they don't have a certain manager on duty who can handle this transaction. This is not how to run a business. Big 5 should always have someone available to sell ammunition. I then called the Woodland Big 5 who said the same thing. No manager on duty who can conduct this transaction. Is this common with Big 5? If so, you need to rectify this issue. I later heard from a Big 5 not from this area that Big 5 can't keep managers due to the pay. Well Big 5, start paying your managers better so this way they can stay and handle transactions. The more transactions your stores make, the more $ for your corporation. Stop letting stores like Dick's Sporting Goods from taking your good employees. read more

Place looks fairly dated, but it's a great place to find standard sports goods such as ear plugs. It seems like there are so many other stores specializing in each sport versus this place which seems to do a little of everything. read more

I went in the store earlier today with my teenage daughter and the experience was a real unpleasant one for sure. The female worker there wearing a white sweatshirt, black leggings and really heavy make up was so damn rude and has no business working in customer services. First of all, as we entered the store, she didn't even make any eye contact or greeting and didn't bother to offer if we needed any help in finding what we needed. Then when we went to check out, how wonderful was it that she helped us, then asked us in such rude manner "need a bag?" I told her yes because we got a few items and can't carry them all. It was such an unnecessary question when you just need to use your comment sense. I would not shop at this Big 5 location unless it's really necessary! That worker needs to be re-trained on how to work with customers. read more

First time here. Clean and organized store. Greeted and offered help by store clerk. The small store was packed with goods but it was pretty easy to find why we needed. Items were neatly organized without looking like it has been picked through. After coming from another Big 5 store in Pleasant Hill, I asked about the sale for similar items in this specific store. Same store clerk checked prices and honored the same sale. Good experience. We'll be back. read more

Decent selection of shoes and sports equipment for reasonable prices. I once bought a pair of name brand running shoes there and then checked the Internet when I got home. Apparently that model is only sold at Big 5 stores, so there is no way to know if the pricing is a good value or not. The layout is somewhat confusing. I was looking for slippers. Saw a display near the running shoes, found a pair that would do in a pinch, then walking to the register with my box I found a whole other section of slippers away from the shoe department. Found a better pair there. read more

It was my first time coming here, and I had a great experience. I walked in, was immediately greeted and asked if I was looking for anything in particular, and was directed to where I needed to go. Just a little update to say that Big 5 sells fishing licenses (CFLs). I totally didn't think they would, but they do. Needing a fishing license, I was understandably juiced by this fact. Plus, the 2011 licenses are printed on heat-sensitive paper (unlike years past), prompting the sales-girl to warn me not to expose mine to the sun lest it be cremated. I made some caustic remark about the California requirement that CFLs be displayed prominently while fishing, hence mine certainly WOULD be exposed to the sun, and hence ruined in short order. She said no; the rule has changed. Keep it out of the sun; somewhere safe. She really knew her stuff. read more

From the moment you walk in you are greeted, at first you have no idea where the greeting came from because of the odd placement of the cashiers counter and the greeting is usually from a smiling face. I usually go right to the firearms/ camping department or right to the back to look at the shoes on sale. I don't understand these low/ bad reviews posted about Big 5. If you have a question, speak up! Don't cower and expect a sales person to jump down your throat to buy something. In most cases I hate being bothered when i just want to browse and shop on my own. but if I have a question I usually just step in and ask. This store is smaller than all the others I have been to but thats okay. I usually know what I want before I go in. read more

There is something a little disorienting about this Big 5. It feels like a relic of the not so distant days when malls and outlets were the only place to find good deals, instead of online. Stores like this with average customer service and overblown and understocked shelves seem to hide in towns like Davis where local support is still strong. I went to the store on February 13 around 1:30 pm. I was greeted by the cashier. I was looking for tennis rackets. Three female employees were chatting while stocking shelves by the badminton equipment area. I had to ask for the location of the tennis rackets. Rather than taking me to the area or at least walking to the main aisle to show me, the young woman who responded just told me to look in the back. I think there were a total of five employees in the store, and not one of them offered to help. There were no other customers. I got the impression that helping customers was not in the job description for sales associates. I left and do not intend to return. read more

It's a strangely organized Big 5 and it's a little smaller than most I'm familiar with, but it's a Big 5. Convenient location right in The Marketplace. So far has had what we're looking for when we go looking for it. Employees are quite friendly here, but I haven't had to rely on them for any information yet. Might update this later on if I have a particularly good or bad experience. Otherwise, I like the location and I'm glad it's there. read more

Greeted nicely as I walked in the door and was promptly asked if I was looking for anything in particular by a nice asian guy. He lead me to the cleat section, and I asked to use the restroom, and he happily escorted me to the back room. This particular Big 5 has a great selection and friendly staff. I love this place! We lost 2 snow saucers that we borrowed from friends, so I went in looking to purchase 2 new ones. They were out since it was the end of February. When the store manager, Whitney, heard our story she offered her snow saucer to us. She walked out in the parking lot and gifted us her snow saucer, which she happened to have in her car. Such kind gesture was uplifting and it made us feel better when we were having a bad day. This world needs more people like her! read more

Was asked to leave the store because I made the manager uncomfortable. I am a student who came from class to go buy a soccer ball. I was on the phone when I walked in and didn't hear when the person at the register said hello. I was going into an aisle when I finally heard the manger ask if there was anything I was looking for. I said no and continued to look around the store like a normal customer, not even 2 minutes later she said me again. I replied with the same thing, that I was just looking around. She preceded to say that she'd be my "friend" and followed me around the store. I went all the way around, couldn't find what I was looking for then finally asked where the balls were. She pointed me to the right direction and after selecting a ball I went to find another item I wanted. Before I even took 10 steps, she told to me leave because I was making her uncomfortable, she told me that she was refusing my right to buy anything and if I wouldn't leave she would call the police of me. I asked what I did to make her feel uncomfortable and she didn't give me a reason. When leaving the store she asked me if I was buying the ball, I said yes and she proceeded to let me buy a single item before leaving. I was ran out of the store because I didn't say hello and didn't say what I was looking for, yet they still wanted my patronage. Didn't know that hellos and letting people know what you are looking for is mandatory. And good to know what store not to go back into. read more

The managers are very helpful. The employees do their job well too. It's the only place in Davis that has guns, ammo, and clay pigeons and they are not arrogant knowing we cannot go anywhere else. They do the best they can. Kudos to them! read more

Went in to get some soccer cleats for my daughter and Whitney was super helpful. She gave us tips on what shin pads to wear and how everything should fit. She helped my daughter try everything on and she was so good with her considering my daughter is only 6 years old. We had stopped at the big 5 in Woodland but they didn't have cleats her size and were very limited, so we decided to go here and glad we did. read more

Went in today to buy shoes . Never again will I go back. Lady at the register was plain rude , the staff seemed like they don't get along with one another. Who knows their issue . This was a bad experience and I hope they hire better people or train their current stuff on how they should speak to customers. read more

Hi, Wow, I had such a disapointing experience. 1st of all, the people who works at the store doesn't even care that they are at wrok. No smile, no hello and on top of that when I went to the register the so called manager name "Steve" took so long time to even pay through my Credit Card. Then he started to remove somethign from shoes and I was waitign and waiting, he doesn't even care what's happening. After sliding my card, he started to check my signatures and matching on the credit card and after moving my card up and down and my singnature up and down I think he was unable to figure out what's the right way to match the signature. Than at the end he asked for the Photo ID, such a non-sense behaviour and attitude. I just felt so bad and felt he just accumulated the experience of his age but no professional experience and no learnig from his job, colleagues or time. I ask myself why these stores hire these kind of people to make their reputation bad. I don't think I'll ever step into that store again or recommend some one.Very un-professional and disgusting experience. It sucks, 1st bad experience in Davis. The customer service wasn't all that great. I went to an associate to get into a fitting room and he told me I had to go to the cashier. After waiting in line for 10 minutes to talk to the cashier, she paged someone to open up the dressing room for me. Turns out the same guy who told me to go to the cashier was the one who let me in. What a waste of time. The item I was trying on fit fine, but I didn't purchase it there because of their lack of customer service. Not planned on coming back here again. read more

I go here frequently at times, the staff is knowledgable you just have to talk to the right person. If you want shoes vs gun stuff, certain employees are more knowledgable than others. I actually got talked out of buying a crappy rifle, which i'm glad. read more
