The Drowned Lands' "Summer Terra" (Double New England IPA)

BierWax is a craft beer and vinyl record listening bar that opened in Brooklyn, New York in 2017. It was founded by DJ and record collector Chris Maestro. Born in Queens to a Guyanese father and a Dominican mother, Maestro grew up in Flushing, Queens with a fervent love for hip-hop. He started DJing in his early 20s and has collected records obsessively ever since, particularly in genres that gave rise to hip-hop: funk, soul and jazz. He was bitten by the craft beer bug during a trip to Hong Kong in 2005, and his search for new brews led him to craft beer festivals and brewery tours. Early on, Maestro noticed that there weren't a lot of people of color at craft breweries or craft beer bars. He longed to open his own space where people like him could feel right at home and discover new beer in the process. In addition to BierWax's finely curated tap list, the bar is also home to over 5,000 vinyl records. The bar frequently hosts guest DJs as well. BierWax has a strict "No Requests Please" policy--not because of "High Fidelity"-style snobbery, but because there are just too many records⁠ to manage. If every customer made a request, the bar would need a dedicated team just to comb through the stacks. And then who would pour the beer? I visited BierWax this past summer while I was cycling around NYC. I was trying out a number of Brooklyn and Queens breweries and pizzerias and this was my second stop of the day. Craft beer and vinyl are two of my favorite loves, so I felt right at home here. Not only was I impressed by the craft beer selection but also the enormous amount of vinyl records adorning the shelves on the wall. There was a great playlist going during my visit and the bartender on duty was a really cool guy who engaged in some great conversation with me. I enjoyed pours of The Seed's "As Simple As Renewal?" (Kellerbier) and The Drowned Lands' "Summer Terra" (Double New England IPA). Both of them were fantastic! Although craft beer bars that feature vinyl are becoming more common now, BierWax is a place that is truly special. I highly recommend this bar to craft beer and/or vinyl aficionados and I really hope to return!

There's just something about a bar that spins vinyl records - the vibes cannot be matched. I've been here a few times, but was finally able to go at night when they have a DJ and had a great time with my friends. The drinks are strong and the bartenders are friendly. As with most vinyl bars, they don't take request, so don't expect that, but they play a nice variety of music from R&B to jazz and more. The inside isn't too big. It's mostly bar seating, but the backyard patio is very spacious and would be good for larger groups. I will definitely be back!

Very cute space. Very much a neighborhood bar. Like most NY spots, it's tight but a few large groups can hang in the back patio, there is heat. Service was nice, order at bar counter can get difficult once the crowd starts rolling in. I didn't try the food, but many said it is good. It's actually light bites delivered over from next door. Does get quite loud especially once the DJ gets going. We had a good time.

This is the first place I go to and actually see diversity. There is a lack of representation of my beautiful colored people in the craft beer industry and bierwax really made me feel at home. They play vinyl records and also sell art work from a few artist I know of, very good peaceful feel. The bartender is very attentive and happy to serve. They also sell food to order.

Love that they have outdoor seating - both covered patio seating in the back as well as a few covered tables in the front on the sidewalk. In the summer they have tables in the street during Open Streets on the weekends. Good selection of beers including non alcoholic (the Kölsch by Best Day Brewing was great).

Came across this Prospect Heights gem this past weekend while strolling through the neighborhood, and so glad I stopped by! Not only does it have a fantastic list of beers on tap as well as bottles, but they are also reasonably priced and you can get many (if not all) of the drafts in taster vs other sizes as well. Some of our favorites were the Killsboro Gimme Gimme More Juice (fruited sour) and the Oxbow Imperial Saison. The ambiance of this spot is also pretty special. The place is definitely music and beer forward (and the friendly bartender working curated an awesome playlist from many of the records and CDs - def a nostalgic throwback). Also it's spacious with a large enclosed back patio (seems perfect for spring summer and fall). Will be back again next time in the neighborhood for sure!

I came here intentionally because there was a deal with a separate app. This was out of my typical comfort zone but an always willing to try something new. I went in without that much prior research and though I knew they had craft beers on tap, I didn't know the general vibe. It was very audiophile focus with albums in shelves throughout the place and photos of famous artists/rappers. It was Saturday and packed and there were a lot of jams. They had drinks on tap and with bottles. Other than beers, they also had ciders, wines and cocktails. I did cider because I favor that more and it was a chill glass. Apparently you can avoid fees by paying in cash but I didn't see the sign until after. Also the bathroom is really on the small side so I would keep that in mind when visiting. Because it was packed and it is a small place, I didn't try to stay as long. I would try either coming early in the weekend (after eating since there is not really food) or during the week. I did love the music here and the overall vibe. I think on a not so packed day, this could be a good place to have a second date or meet up with friends.

GREAT spot during these socially distant times. Bierwax has both seating in the front and in the back. The front space is in the street and is blocked off. There is definitely food traffic on the sidewalks but overall I felt the area was safe. read more

The embodiment of Brooklyn - craft beer and vinyl records. A solid selection of beers on tap as well as a menu of bottles and cans. I kicked it off with a speedway stout - Joe had the Primo Remix IPA. Vibe was very chilled on a Saturday afternoon. Place is really overpriced and has a pretty mediocre tap list. I also think its kinda lame to charge 10 dollars for an evil twin can that sells for 5-6 bucks at the deli by my apartment. The service is good the people are nice and the music is really dope. Unfortunately the prices are too high. read more

BierWax is one of a kind! There is no place like it in NYC and it goes unmatched. I've had a birthday celebration and many gatherings of friends in this establishment. Each time, there has been a welcoming, diverse, musically knowledgeable staff who recommended some amazing beers. Let it be known, I was never a beer drinker until I was introduced to the craft beers at BW. I can't say enough about the incredible staff, management, and atmosphere. BierWax is always super clean, has awesome music, and incorporates incredible art. This establishment has literally stolen my heart several times. Perfect date spot, hangout spot, or event location. I've been coming to bierwax for over a year now and I consider it a second home. All of the bartenders here create an incredibly welcoming atmosphere and treat you like their own friends and family. On top of that, their music selection is incredible, they never miss a beat & always curate a feel good environment for all types of crowds. This is a trendy bar with great draft beer selections. I tried multiple beers and none were disappointing. It's a cool spot for a date or groups. This is one of my favorite spots in Brooklyn. Chill vibes, and amazing selection of beers on tap and in cans. I prefer stouts and usually have at two different ones available. You can get beer here that you can't find in too many other places. I can't wait for Bierwax to open again fully so that I can enjoy the music--the all vinyl deejay selections are the other highlight. There is also a great back patio. Last but not least the staff is amazing. I have been to other bars where the drinks and music might be alright but the staff leaves much to be desired. Not here. They are very nice and attentive! read more

This place is amazing! From the live DJ spinning only vinyl to the backyard garden to the customers, every time I've gone I've enjoyed myself. The owners are always on site and very personable, like they are welcoming you personally to their super cool home that happens to offer delicious craft beer. Speaking of the beer, I'm not usually a beer drinker. Luckily the staff is great at making recommendations based on your taste. Each time I've gone, there was something on tap that was just perfect for me. Can't say enough good things about this place. read more

As someone who has been a patron for over a year I can tell you...Chris and the crew are beyond excellent human beings. BierWax is a community living room filled with amazing beer and even better vinyl. A supremely diverse and friendly staff make every person who enters feel right at home, that is if your parents owned a top notch brewery and your siblings have a record treasure trove that mimics most stores. Also what other spot can you see the owner himself pour a pint in between thrashing some metal in the basement, and jumping behind the one's and two's for an 80's throwback set. BierWax is a spot to be celebrated, hopefully Ariana Grande can see that some day. read more

What an incredible place. If you want true unity in New York, look no further. With an amazing, attentive, and diverse staff, Bierwax has perfectly cultivated what makes Brooklyn, New York, Hip-Hop and beer so great. It is a place that brings people together. Great times had on the amazing patio, pop up kitchens are extra delicious with local, fellow Black owned businesses providing the catering. We threw a private event for ~60 guests at Bierwax the night before our wedding last summer and cannot say enough great things about our experience. Chris was very easy to work with and went above and beyond to make sure we had a great party. Our guests raved about the space, and we really appreciated having the run of the backyard on a hot July night. It doesn't hurt that the beer list was top-notch (as were the bartenders!) read more

Where Brooklyn at??!! I'm so happy this place exists. I came here on a whim back in December 2019 when I heard Kool Bob Love was spinning. I had just seen The Originals at Output right before they shut down (really unfortunate). I'm a hip hop lover so when I walked in and saw Wu Tang to my right and Bobbito Garcia and Sucio to my left, it was unreal felt like I was back in the 90s listening to WKCR. Even got to chop it up with Bobbito after his set. Since then I've had the pleasure to see some LEGENDS spin, from Grand Wizard Theodore, Large Professor, EASY MO BEE, Psycho Les, Skyzoo, Artifacts, DJ Woof AND THE LIST GOES ON, this place is true bred New York!! Also been exposed to some amazing WOMEN DJs shout out to the Doyennes of Disc collective and all the other dope DJs. The staff here is super nice and welcoming and it's amazing to see that most of them are ACTUALLY from New York, which is rare in this new Brooklyn. The owners, husband and wife, are wonderful people who always look out for the community by holding a welcoming space, throwing events, and fundraisers. It's refreshing to see diversity and inclusion in craft beer. I've recommended my friends and associates here and they've all loved it. I live in Queens but I try to make my way to Brooklyn as often as I can, unfortunately due to COVID it was my first time here in 4 months. Picked up some canned beers and mason jars to go, glad to see ya'll are still open and out here. This place is special!!! Hope to be back in the near future for another 90's night while throwing back some sour ipas. Peace&Love!! read more

I was sitting at the bar admiring the decor and artwork (Wu Tang individual portraits ) sipping on a nice imperial stout when I heard the Mecca and The Soul Brother record playing faintly in the background. A rare, yet dope, experience I was privileged to have at this new spot in BK. I fully endorse. See you there. read more

A record collector for over 20 years, founder and principal owner Chris Maestro dreamed of opening a space to house his 5000+ record collection while featuring beer from some of the best local craft breweries. Considering that this establishment had roughly a dozen tables and 24 seats with only 4 seats or so occupied when I was around and I wasn't interfering with business on a slow afternoon, there shouldn't have been a problem with simply letting bygones be bygones. If this is what New Yorkers consider hospitality and acceptable behavior, no wonder people from most other states consider the population to be rude.

BierWax is an amazing place to go get a beer for so many reasons. I live around the block and can say it brings to life the positive vibe of Brooklyn and Prospect Heights. For starters the owner Chris is the most genuine guy you'll ever meet, kinda like Ted Danson in Cheers when I think about it, but then much cooler, better musical taste and knows something about (craft) beers. His bar tenders are always nice and knowledgeable about what's on tap, and there is always great diverse music.
