I've had dogs my whole life and when I filled out their paperwork I was of the opinion the only reason I might return a dog would be aggression or if my personal financial situation changed dramatically. The fostering system gave me a much better idea of what I was committing to in this case. My wife, kiddo, and I all came to meet the dog we thought we wanted and after that went well we took her home. It became immediately clear that this girl had not been indoors or socialized very much, if ever. I was very surprised to have essentially a 70lb puppy on my hands. This was more work than I expected, and it was more work than my family expected, but knowing we had time to work with her as a foster in our home environment provided a lot of confidence in seeing how it went. Almost Home was in regular contact to check in with us and provided us with enrichment toys, advice, and resources for taking her to training classes. There was never pressure to keep her, and it was always clear everybody was only interested in what was best for the animal. After a few weeks she was improving, but still more work than I expected, and Almost Home was happy to let us continue to foster until everybody was sure this would be a good fit. Our girl kept improving and we committed to the adoption. Eventually we were able to return our home to normal, and do so free of concerns things would be destroyed. The time and space that was provided to be sure this would all work out resulted in one of the best bonds I've ever had with a dog. We're inseparable these days, and we owe it to the support Almost Home and their volunteers offered throughout the process.

We attended the rescue's PuppyPalooza in May, and adopted not one, but two gorgeous pups. Josie and Jackson came from different litters, but they are the same age and were cared for in the same loving foster home. They're as close as two dogs can be. A few months later, in November 2016, we learned that Josie's birth mother, who had never been socialized, was still waiting for adoption. Juno, too, had been cared for in the same foster home as our puppies, and so Jackson knew and loved her as well. Two weeks later we brought her into our family. We couldn't be happier! All three pups adore each other, and are a constant source of joy in our house. If not for Hoof, Woof, and Meow Animal Rescue, our pups night not even be alive. Juno and Josie -- along with the remainder of Josie's littermates -- were discovered in a kill shelter by a HWMAR volunteer. She leapt into action and ended up fostering not only Juno and her tiny babies, but Jackson and his nine brothers and sisters, as well. We can't thank HWMAR enough for all that they do for animals in need. They are 100% foster-based, so every dog is in a loving home while they're waiting for their forever family. They are the best rescue out there!

The adoption fees are fair and include the basic vaccinations and of course the spay/neuter if needed. My son and his wife also adopted a pup in 2021 and they are so happy with him. I don't know the past history, my experience with the rescue has been nothing but positive, with people who really care about the welfare of the animals in their care.

We were able to set up a time to meet the dog (each time) quickly even though I have a an irregular schedule. They took the time to make sure we knew what would be required in caring for the dogs as well as visiting our home to ensure it would be a safe and appropriate place for a pet to live. In each adoption they were very helpful and informative, never seemed bothered by my endless questions and continue to be in touch with us for updates and questions. I highly recommend viewing their adoptable dogs online or attending one of their events if you are thinking about adding a meme we to your family .

They use a stepping stone method from inhale to home. The pups start in a triage shelter to ensure the dogs are healthy through vet visits, stabilize the pups after any transit, and to get to know the intricacies of the individual characteristics of the new arrivals. They use this information to pair up the dogs with foster homes, helping the pups learn how to live in a caring environment and structured routines. This helps prepare the dogs for success at the next step which is adoption. Some dogs are so well adapted to the new surroundings that they can skip ahead in the process but others need time to decompress from the trauma they experienced. Again, this places has a mission to help dogs find their perfect home. Feel free to volunteer with the organization as I do, sign up as a foster, or even adopt a new family member. You will enjoy it and appreciate this place.

We tried a few different vets in the area before settling on Barrington Square Animal Hospital…read moresimply because it was closest to our home. After several visits over the years, I can say there are some positives--but also some major drawbacks that ultimately pushed us to look elsewhere. First, this clinic is exceptionally expensive. Nearly every service, from routine checkups to prescriptions, is priced noticeably higher than other veterinarians in the area. Even basic medications felt inflated, which adds up quickly when you have multiple pets. Customer service has been inconsistent. While scheduling appointments is easy, the in-office experience really depends on which doctor you get. Dr. Irina was the biggest issue for us. We saw her at least three separate times, and each visit left us feeling negative and unheard. She was dismissive, condescending, and spoke to us as if we were children rather than pet owners trying to understand our dog's health. When we brought in our six-month-old Doberman for unexplained hair loss, she immediately pushed for nearly $1,000 worth of tests without offering any explanation or talking through potential causes. The approach felt rushed, impersonal, and overly costly. On the other hand, Dr. Zoe was absolutely wonderful. She cared for our mini schnauzer when he needed several rotten teeth removed, and she was patient, kind, and incredibly thorough. She answered every question, explained the procedure and recovery clearly, and even walked us through all the financial details so we knew exactly what to expect. Her compassion and clarity made such a difference during a stressful situation. If every visit had been with Dr. Zoe, this review would be glowing. But the combination of high prices and inconsistent bedside manner--especially the repeated negative experiences with Dr. Irina--made it hard for us to stay loyal to this clinic. For the amount they charge, the level of care should feel far more consistent and respectful.

We were referred to Thrive last fall because our golden retriever was building a lot of fluid…read moreprimarily in his abdomen and chest but was active and had no other symptoms. Thrive performed several tests including an echocardiogram and a CT scan. They couldn't find anything, so they concluded he probably had mesothelioma which is fatal. We knew mesothelioma was extremely rare and usually presented with a cough and fatigue. It would have also been especially unusual because he had never been exposed to asbestos. When we said we were confused because he had no cough or other symptoms that would point to that diagnosis, Thrive said that "goldens are like that"--meaning they don't tell us when they're sick. When we asked them what we should do, they told us to "just let him be a dog." The clear message was that he was dying and we should just make the most of our time with him. We then took him back to our regular vet and spent thousands over the next few months trying to treat him based on what Thrive said. When he still didn't start coughing or showing any new symptoms we took him to the University of Wisconsin where they did a repeat echocardiogram and immediately diagnosed him with a fully treatable heart condition. Today he is completely cured. He never had mesothelioma. We came way too close to euthanizing our dog based on what Thrive said. We ultimately spent thousands treating a condition he didn't have and put our beloved dog through so much that wasn't necessary. The right thing for Thrive to do would have been to recommend other places to go for additional diagnostic testing; we certainly would have investigated other options if we thought we had any. We wrote a letter to Thrive recently explaining our disappointment that they didn't find his condition on the echocardiogram and instead defaulted to a fatal rare condition, but their management hasn't responded. Thrive is part of a group of nearly 400 vet clinics owned by a private equity firm. In reading the PE's website content we got the impression that profitability is the priority. Your mileage may vary, but our experience was unnecessarily expensive and very nearly tragic. Had Thrive management bothered to respond they might get another star.
