This used to be the most-visited Indian grocery store in the Union City area. And yes, I know, there are a lot more Indian grocery options around now. Competition is real, and honestly, that's great for customers. That said, this store feels like it may have passed its prime a bit. They still carry the basics (and that's important), but the fresh grocery selection feels inconsistent. On the flip side, there's a noticeably bigger focus on frozen meals and frozen options, which is convenient... but it's not quite the same as walking in and feeling confident about the fresh picks. A bigger concern for me: a few times I visited, I noticed items that were close to--or possibly past--their prime/expiration date. That's the kind of thing that makes shoppers hesitate, especially when there are so many alternatives nearby. I genuinely think a little refresh would go a long way: - tighter inventory rotation - clearer quality checks - small clean-up / organization upgrades This is still a local business, and I'd like to see them bounce back. Usually the vegetables are not fresh and nothing like Parwal , guar etc. is available. Twice this happened to me that the bill was very high when the recipe was checked they put silver coin instead of cilantro. Another time they put a wrong code and bill was very high. I cant recommend this store. Multiple times now I have purchased something here and upon opening it at home it was spoiled or inedible. Most recently I purchased kachoris (a savory snack) which when I got home I found they were hard as stones (seriously I could have broken a tooth). I brought them back with the receipt 2 days later and the only brand they had was twice the price for half the weight of the snacks. I asked to just get my money back and they refused. The receipt says all exchanges and returns must be accompanied with a receipt within 14 days but they refused to give me a refund they would only allow me to buy an item that is twice the price and pay the difference. Customer service is very poor. Some of the staff members are very rude . Each and every item is .50 cents to $1.00 higher then other stores. Rest is up to you guys. I have been to many Indian grocery stores (south and east bay) including the Fremont location of Bharat Bazar) and must say, this store exceeded my expectations. If you're someone who likes to shop by not hunting for things (incorrect labels, mismatched placement of goods, poorly lit shelves, inconsistent stock) and appreciate the time someone takes to keep shelves organized (thank you) - then this is the store for you. Granted that you'll spend few times learning how the store is laid out, but it's pure bliss to shop here. In and out in less than 15 mins if you know what to get/pick. The aisles are spacious enough so you don't bump into each other. Produce looked fresh and stocked. Parking outside could be tight. Old reviews don't seem to correctly reflect the current state of affairs. While they may be true (back in the past), I strongly believe in change. In this case, it is for good. The pendulum could swing in either direction so hope they keep up the good work and listen to their customers. This will/has become my go-to shop for now. read more

Good prices on many items. Unfortunately they are always out of some of the items I ordered. Then they substitute for something that is not quite as good even though I requested they not do that. Twice have I received items that were old, spoiled and unusable. Expired and nasty produce and frozen bread that is 8 months expired! Worst place ever. I was looking for some types of rice and spices that I really need for a special diet. After about 15mts looking for what I need and not being able to find it, I asked one of the register clerks for someone to help me, she said go and read the labels, look yourself. So I started walking and spotted a lady who works there and was walking through an aisle, I told her I needed help with some items since I'm not familiar with Indian food and said she couldn't help me because she was busy. Indian grocery in strip mall near OMG tea & Shell gas station. Parking spaces are tiny but usually not full. I don't shop here often, but when I've come it's been good. Samosas were quite tasty & Inexpensive. I've bought some veggies here & cooked same day were good. I needed decor for a Thai event- no Thai groceries in town but the Indian flower garlands looked perfect. I've bought some pre made sauces & food here. This is like my regular place for Indian groceries. Since March 2020, have been ordering online and the delivery is prompt. If anything from the list isn't available or they could provide alternative, they call up and let us know so that necessary changes could be made accordingly. First, the prices are higher than other shops around. However, because I was trying to stock my parents' refrigerator during the pandemic, I decided to make use of their online ordering. Big mistake. I ordered several things, including organic red onions and a bag of celery. Upon receiving my delivery, I was perplexed to find several items I had not ordered (a big bag of Urad Dal, some frozen Sambal vegetables) and the onions and celery were amiss. I checked on my receipt, and was even more perplexed when it listed Urad Dal and Sambal vegetables. I always double check my order and cart, and did not select these on the website. I called to say that I am sure I selected organic red onions and celery, but there might be some issue with their website. I had frozen the vegetables and not opened any of the containers, and wanted to return them but the two ladies on the phone instead berated me for a good fifteen minutes. Terrible customer service. This is one of the bigger Indian stores. The staff is friendly and the store is well maintained. Although I was unhappy with the produce. The vegetables were not fresh at all. The tomatoes were extremely soft and mashed up. I would recommend shopping here for grains and masalas but not vegetables. read more

The stereotypical Indian store is dirty, musty, and unorganized. You would think that's just how I remember these kinds of stores when I was growing up and things have changed now, but sadly the state of affairs are more less the same for these stores. But this location of Bharat Bazar is actually clean. It's actually organized. It actually doesn't have that distinctive Indian store smell. And they actually have a modern checkout system and take credit cards. It's like Indian stores have finally entered the modern era. But all of the niceties wouldn't matter much if the products were lacking. But they have a good selection, with reasonable prices. We get things like grains, dahls, basmati rice bags, and big bags of cheap spices. Oh, and my favorite, the frozen parathas! Worst customer service ever. They don't know how to communicate with customers. Many times the cashier almost throws the bag at you to bag your own groceries. When confronted with their rudeness they completely ignore you. They are lucky that they are dealing with customers who are used to this type of service in India otherwise they would run out of business. I don't care if I sound racist when saying this but they need to realize they are not in India where customer service is very rare to non existence. read more

I shop here because it is the closest Indian store. Veggie selections are okay here. Sometimes they they don't rotate and have rotten fruits and vegetables on the shelves. I rarely check receipts after grocery shopping but when I'm only there for few stuff then I do the calculations in my mind :) for the second time I have been charged for 2 bundles of cilantro instead of 1. I let go the first time thinking mistakes happen, but today I checked the receipt she charged me for 2 again. The cashiers name was Mahi. They should check the bag properly if not sure. This review is particularly for Threading service. The lady (don't know her name, she wears a head scarf) has extremely weird attitude. The store is quite clean and has almost everything an Indian can think of. The customer service is pretty non-existent but, then, Indian's aren't really big on that anyway. The furry strawberries on display were nearly as bad as the shoddy bagging job of the cashier but, again, that's not the be all and end all. The biggest negative, and a rather enormous one at that, was the Afghan headscarf wearing woman cashier who was shocked and almost disgusted at my giving her a 'salam' greeting. I like this place & feels its much better than the Fremont location. Its well laid out, I find literally everything I want, ppl are nicer and its well kept. I was there on one of the hottest days of the season and felt bad for those working, sorting out stuff and ones behind the counters. I suggested to the lady billing me to pull up a chair and sit but found out it's against their policies. BB, pls revise your policies.
